Chapter Text

He had to be dreaming. Or maybe he was finally dead and this was God’s last gift to him. His eyes widened before he put his hands on her shoulders. “What? Can you repeat what you just said?”

“Let’s get married, Luke.” Her smile was infectious as she looked up at him. The brightness of her voice before she took one of his hands and placed it on her cheek. Leaning into it, enjoying the warmth of the hand that she never wanted to let go of. “Let’s get married.” She breathed.

He didn’t know what was going on or why but he didn’t care. He took a step towards her, pressing his forehead against hers. A small smile on his lips. “You better not be joking.”

“I’m just responding to a question you asked long ago. Sorry it took so long.”

“What?”

“Don’t tell me you forgot. You know memory loss is a very serious problem.” The soft giggle as she turned her head to kiss the inside of his palm. “You asked me with a plastic ring when we were kids. I mean it’s no diamond ring but..”

“I have one. Well technically it’s a ruby.”

“You have a ring?” She raised a brow and then gripped his hand tightly. “So why was I the one to ask.”

“Timing? Wait. Didn’t you just say that I asked you first? And anyways I was planning to…”

“Mhmn sure. If I kept waiting.. might have to wait another eight years.”

He groaned before he lowered his head to close her lips. “You’re so mean. Always teasing me.”

“So, is that a yes?”

“But why now? Why are you…” It was then that he noticed her eyes, twinkling with unshed tears.

“You know…”

“I just put the pieces together.”

“Rosa…”His voice cracked before lowering his head. “You don’t…” he should have done a better job at hiding it. Or maybe he should have left earlier. “This isn’t fair.”

To me. To you. To us.

“Do you not want to be married to me?” She sounded so small. So Unsure.

He never wanted to be the reason she felt this way. He never wanted to be the reason for her tears. “I don’t want to put you through that. The unknown. The—“

“But isn’t that my choice? I don’t…” She sharply inhaled before shaking her head. “I love you. I’ve always loved you. You’ve always been the one I wanted to spend my life with. You….just you.” She reached out and touches his cheek, lightly rubbing it with the pad of her thumb. “I don’t want to spend anymore time not being your wife.”

“Rosa”

“Don’t you dare say I deserve better or someone else. I don’t. I don’t need anyone or anything else.” Her voice was shifting towards what she would use in court. Passionate at winning, at making her points clear, and convincing anyone who would listen. "You. Just you. It can be three years or an entire lifetime. I just want you.” She gripped the front of his shirt and lowered her head, unable to stop the tears from falling. “I just want to be with you for as long as I can, Luke. Please…..”

“You’re such a crybaby.”

She lifted her head to see him smiling at her with tears falling down his cheeks. “You’re one to talk. Who reacts like that to someone asking them to marry them?” She laughed and then wiped his tears away with the back of her hand. “Me and you. Us. That’s all I need.”

He sighed before he cupped her face with his hands and kissed her. “You know I can never win against you.”

“Good.”

They looked at each other before laughing.

“I love you so much, Rosa. You…are everything I ever could want.. everything I needed. I just… want more for you.”

“Then say yes. Say yes and be my husband. Wear a stupid ring. Wake up next to me and give me bad morning breath smelling kisses. Drop me off at work and pick me up. Tell me you’ll love me forever. Even past our own lives. Just… say yes.”

“Will that be enough?”

“What more can a girl want but being worth the person she always loved? If it’s you…I already have everything i can ever want.”

“You…are really good with your words.”

“As a lawyer I’m well acquainted with making my points.”

He sighed before letting go of her hands and she tried to grab his hands. “Calm down I’m not letting you go. I’d never let you go. “ he said with a smile before he opened the pouch on his camera bag and taking out a little bag. “Rosa,” He got down on one knee and smiled up at her before holding out the ring he had for so many years. A ring he though he’d be buried with. A ring thought would never find its true owner. “Will you marry me?”

“I asked you first.”

“I have a ring prepared also technically...”

“Yes."

He smiled before slipping the ring on her finger. Picking her up and spinning her around.

“Yes?”

“Yes dummy!” She laughed before holding his face in her hands and leaning down to kiss him. “I love you, Luke.”

“I love you more.”

“Not possible.”

“You won’t win this argument.”
