Chapter Text
The bright prison cell was quiet, empty. The only noise was the footsteps of the occasional scientist who would walk past or the banging that would come from one of her neighbours.
The room was bright white, fluorescent lights burned her eyes and made them sting. The only furniture that it had was a single bed, devoid of any comfort.
From its appearance one would expect it to smell sterile, like a hospital, however the room smelt damp and old, the contrast confusing to the senses.
There was a glass wall that looked out into a corridor, the wall opposite her cell was made of stone. y/n believed that this is what it felt like to be an animal in a zoo, to be watched and observed be people walking past. A lack of privacy and a never ending boredom.
She had lost track of the number of days she had been locked up in there. It could have been weeks, months, years. It was hard to tell.
Her body was exhausted along with her mind from being poked and prodded by scientist trying to figure out what makes her tick, how to get her to use her abilities, how to weaponise her.
A loud explosion woke y/n from her staring competition with the wall. A loud siren piercing her ears almost simultaneously. Jumping hard from her slouched position on the bed with her heart racing from the loud sounds that disturbed the silence, y/n watched as officers with guns rushed past towards the exit to try and hold off whoever caused the explosion.
The ear shattering explosions and gun shots continued for a while. The old building shaking and cracking, debris falling from the celling.
Y/n felt tense as what felt like the hundredth explosion went off in the distance. She flinched at the painful noise.
Two figures appeared in front of her view, people who she was used to seeing in passing, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.
Y/n watched as the Maximoff twins made their way towards the exit. before they left, Wanda Maximoff turned to y/n’s enclosure and used her powers to unlock the door. Unable to leave her there with no means to defend herself or escape. Wanda gave her a slight nod before she was lifted by her twin and they disappeared in a blur of blue light.
The possibility of escaping brought hope to her shattered body, though the fear of getting caught by an agent was trying to get a hold of her mind.
Deciding that the pros outweigh the cons and remembering that she could defend herself with her new found powers, y/n walked toward the door and slid it open.
Taking a step out into the corridor sent chills over her body, the floor being freezing against her bare feet. Bracing herself for the possible danger y/n began walking in the direction that she hoped would lead her to freedom.
Once she made it to the end of the corridor she heard the sound of people fighting, gun shots hitting metal. Y/n slid against the wall nearest to her to hide from whoever was around the corner.
The fighting fell silent and With her heart pounding in her ears, she cautiously peaked around the corner and was met with the sight of a man dressed in blue, white and red. Stars and Stripes.
Now y/n has been a captive of hydra for quite a while but she would have to have been living under a rock to not recognise the man, Steve Rogers, Captain America.
Steve was talking to a bald man with a monocle, dressed all in black. A man who was unfortunately familiar to her. Baron Strucker.
“Baron Strucker, Hydra’s number one thug” Steve Rogers said
“Technically I’m a thug for shield” the man countered him
“Technically your unemployed. Where’s Loki’s sceptre” y/n gave a slight shudder and the mention of the sceptre that had turned her world upside down.
“Don’t worry I know when I’m beat. You’ll mention how I cooperated I hope?”
“I’ll put it right under illegal human experimentation” Steve fired back sarcastically. “How many are there?”
Just when he spoke, Wanda appeared from the shadows and used her power to throw him down the stairs.
Stifling a gasp. Y/n has to hold herself back from going after him, concern flooding her. Even though she didn’t know the man, she didn’t want him to be hurt.
However, her concern was not necessary as Steve got back up just as Wanda quickly backed up out of the room.
“We have a second enhanced, female, do not engage.” Steve announced
“You’ll have to be faster than tha-“ before he could finish what he was saying, Steve kicked up his shield and kicked it into Struckers chest, he collapsed onto the concrete floor, his monocle breaking from the impact.
He looked dead.
Y/n didn’t feel any remorse for the man who has kept her locked away, experimented on her, taken her from her family and her life.
Steve held a hand up to his ear and said “guys, I got Strucker”
While he was distracted another agent came up from behind him, gun raised to the back of his head.
Concern flooded y/n once more for the man even though she new it wasn’t necessary. She came around the corner fully and put all her concentration into her powers, she raised her hand and threw the man backwards into a wall, knocking him unconscious.
Steve turned quickly, looked surprised at the appearance of yet another enhanced
He slowly approached her with caution so that he could avoid being the next to become airborne.
Concerned that she would be like the other enhanced individuals he had come across. He didn’t want to take the risk that she was working with hydra
Although, Taking a look at her hospital like attire and scared expression, Steve believed it was safe to assume she was being held prisoner there and wasn’t working with hydra or a threat to him.
Steve gave her a curt nod “thank you”
Y/n nodded her head in return, not used to having someone speak directly to her.
“Are you hurt?” Steve asked the girl
She shook her head no, although that was a lie.
Steve saw through her, noting the scattering of scratches, bruises and sunken in cheeks from a lack of proper food.
However he held his tongue, they could get her help once she was free from this facility.
Steve, knowing they had to get out of there, said “you can come with me, I’ll get you out of here”
Believing that she can trust him and feeling assured by his kind gaze and his offer, she walked slowly towards him.
Once she was next to him Steve led the way and they both start walking down the stairs, to the exit.
Steve leads her to a large metal door and pulled it open, revealing a cold, snowy landscape full of trees. Y/n can make out smoke and fire in the distance from previous explosions.
Steve talks in his earpiece again “I’ve found a third enhanced, female, she is not a threat.”
Feeling a shiver run over her body from the intense cold and her lack of warm clothing or shoes. Y/n takes a tentative step onto the snow, a breathe of relief escaping her.
Finally, she’s out of that building, out of that enclosure and away from the prying eyes of hydra, although she is not safe yet. They still have to get away from that base.
Steve charges ahead again, eager to get them to the cover of the tree line. Trying to keep up with his long strides y/n has to run after him.
They made there way deep into the snowy forest, if it weren’t for the circumstances the scenery would be quite beautiful. However, the constant noise of fighting and her pounding heart brought her back to reality.
Steve led her to a clearing which held a large plane. He led her up the ramp and into the ship where his team mates were situated.
A woman with short red hair, who y/n recognised to be Natasha Romanoff, took notice of y/n first.
“Steve, who’s this?” She asked inquisitively with slight concern lacing her tone.
“She’s the third enhanced, she saved my life. I trust her.”
Natasha gave Steve a nod though she still looked uncertain before turning back to a man laying on a stretcher, Clint Barton.
Y/n awkwardly shuffled on her feet, she was unsure of what to do with herself. Before she had been taken by hydra, she had watched these people on the news. She saw how they saved New York from the alien invasion.
They were heroes. And she felt immensely out of place.
A hand landed gently on her shoulder, causing her to tense up, it had been a long time since someone had touched her without the intent of hurting her.
Y/n glanced behind her carefully and made eye contact with Steve Rogers, he gave her a small nod to encourage her to move further into the plane.
Y/n nodded gently and walked forwards, she tentatively took a seat. She sat down on one of the many seats that lined the side of the aircraft.
She glanced around her and noticed another man was on board, she recognised him to be Bruce Banner. He was wrapped in a blanket and had headphones over his ears.
She could hear the opera music coming from his headphones. He looked stressed and afraid, probably the same way that she did.
Y/n’s thoughts were interrupted by the noise of heavy footsteps making their way up the ramp. From the sound of it, there was two people.
Two figures emerges from the open door of the plane. Tony stark and Thor Odinson. Y/n’s eyes widened at the sight of them. A billionaire and a god. What was her life?
“Uh…who’s that?” Tony stark stated, gesturing to her.
“She’s the third enhanced. She’s coming with us Tony.” Steve said
“And if she tried to kill us?” Tony asked
“She won’t. She saved my life.” Steve argued, standing up for her
“Okay. Whatever you say, capsicle.” Tony said as he walked towards the front of the plane.
“Midgardian. What is your name?” A deep voice said. Y/n glanced up timidly at the extremely tall god.
“Y/n.” She said hesitatently, her voice was quiet and rough after being imprisoned for so long.
“Well, lady y/n. It is a pleasure.” Thor said as he bowed slightly before he made his way to a seat in the plane.
Y/n sighed as she stared ahead of her. None of this felt real. She had been captured by HYDRA and then rescued by the avengers. Her life kept getting weirder and weirder.
Y/n pulled her legs up to her chest and rested her back against the seat. She let out a sigh of relief as the airplane’s engine roared to life.
The vehicle ascended and took to the sky. Y/n watched out the window as the trees and the old building began to shrink.
She felt immensely relieved and grateful to be free of that place. Feeling quite content the further she got from that awful place, blissfully unaware of the danger that lies ahead of her, and how her life will never be the same again.
