“Come with me, Jack,” his teacher said, holding out a hand for him to get up. “He’ll never hurt you again. Not you, not Rebecca.”
“Never?” he asked, almost daring to be hopeful. His mom had promised that. His granddad too. And Ms. Inverness, so many years past, all the way back in fifth grade.
Mr. Robin nodded. He’d made Oliver simply stop showing up to school, after all. What else could he do for Jack?
He hesitated. Thought for a moment. Glanced down at the concrete, glanced up towards the sky. “Okay. Okay,” he said. “I’ll go with you.”
