It had been two weeks since Wolfhagen. Exactly fourteen days since the blood, the fear and so much death. Since Ceelia died in front of them, and his father had saved his life, and since he had consumed Soul’s heart. He had yet to use any of the powers he felt pushing gently under the surface of his skin. He wasn’t sure he ever would.
The three of them had come through the Bruges cut in a huddle of exhaustion, the adrenaline having fully worn away, leaving them all diminished. Nathan had watched the other two gather themselves to push on, Gabriel explaining in his brusque but beautiful way that the place they were headed wasn’t far off. Three blocks through magical cobbled streets.
Annalise took a breath and held it to puff up her chest, raising her chin as if to say, “You lead, we’ll follow.” Brave and trusting in a way that made Nathan believe he had the strength to travel those last three blocks. She was right, of course. They would follow Gabriel anywhere.
