Chapter Text
İt was rather a peaceful day in the Jabberwock island, at least for the most of the residents. Unfortunately, this didn't apply to Mikan Tsumiki, the meek nurse of the class. She was dismayed by her classmates suddenly getting ill and their temperatures flaring up beyond what was considered healthy.
Perplexed by the transmission speed of the disease, she concluded that the best course of action would be to take them all to the hospital and put them in seperate rooms in order to prevent them from carrying the sickness to others. However this impulsive action would later on cause her to burn out and easily fall asleep on any time of the day because of her lack of rest.
İt wouldn't come as a surprise that these things happened when you put into consideration what she had been through the last few days. Since she was the only person with advanced medical knowledge, she was forced to do long and perpetual hours of shifts solely to provide the 3 patients with optimal care. As if that wasn't enough, she also had to deal with their tantrums and give them medicine regularly even though they resisted against it which caused her to have a hard time giving the medications especially if they were taken orally.
Not to mention, Mioda even attempted to escape the hospital quite a few times out of boredom until Mikan came into the realization that İbuki was obeying every order she was given. But the one symptom which was extra hard for her to figure out was Nagito's. At first, she even thought he meant every insult he had given to Mikan during examinations which lowered her mood even more. İt wasn't until him mentioning how much he despised hope that made Mikan come into her senses. She knew it was impossible for it to be true, something was amiss thus making her come into the consclusion that he indeed was only telling lies.
Despite her overall obediance, Akane was the hardest to endure out of the 3 patients. Not because she was problematic or anything, the reason it was hard to bear her was mainly cause of her emotional instability. She was crying constanly and cowering at every sudden noise that appeared whether it was from the hospital or the outside. Whenever Mikan entered her room, she would feel miserable seeing her once almighty friend being in shambles and throwing tantrums like a child which is the reason why Fuyuhiko and Hajime was assigned with the task to take care of her and making sure she didn't attempt to harm herself.
Speaking of Hajime and Fuyuhiko, they wouldn't have been able to help if they didn't insist over it. Mikan was a bit reluctant about letting them help her at first but when they informed her that it was for the prevention of any more murders from happening because of the sickness, she didn't have the heart to refuse them. They even accepted to assist her and take care of the patients while she wasn't examining them or administering their I. V. fluids. Besides she knew deep down how beneficial a helping hand could be during her shifts and eventually confirmed herself how right she was in following her hunch as time passed by.
She needed their support more than ever now and words couldn't express how grateful she was for their kind suggestion since she didn't expect anyone to involve in it and especially not someone as short tempered as Fuyuhiko. She was also glad to see Fuyuhiko's scars almost healed and felt relieved to see his injured eye being sterile and healthy without any sign of infection on it.
Souda too took on a task as well despite his inability to care for the sickly. İnstead of grieving on it, he decided to make himself useful and commenced fixing the broken devices and furnitures all over the hospital. He first started by fixing the tattered fly nets and repaired the broken video monitoring device. İf someone were to look at the device, they could have easily mistaken it as brand new thus showcasing his talent as a mechanic. Nekomaru was also sweet enough to put bars on the windows outside of the rooms in which the patients stayed to stop them from committing any unwanted getaways through the windows.
Mikan made sure to thank every one of them later by giving them gifts and chatting with them to uplift their moods. Yet, she had the strange intuition that something was wrong and this hunch of hers wouldn't let her go. But she couldn't afford to be bothered by silly things like this, if she were to be in a bad condition then who would care for these 3? She was the only one capable of taking care of the patients and monitoring their conditions. She didn't have the right to get sick or tired, they depended on her and she wouldn't ever dream of disappointing them, especially not now.
She feigned being in a good place both mentally and physically for her sick friends but in reality her situation wasn't even near fine. The only times she would find some peace of mind was during lunch times but with Hiyoko joining in, it turned from a relaxing time in the beach to a period that mostly consisted of her being ridiculed and insulted by her worst tyrant which damaged her mental health even further while causing her self degradation to hit a new low.
Despite all the ego crushing effects, Hiyoko's aggression has also embedded a strange emotion that she hasn't felt for a really long amount of time into her subconsciousness, one that she hasn't associated towards her bully. "How dare she insult and beat me down like this when she hasn't been through an iota of the struggle ı am in?" she pouted and scowled while saying this in her head. But when she realised how dreadful her thought was, she immediately shook her head to distract her mind from the violence inciting concept that somehow dug it's way into her brain.
She shouldn't have said this... What kind of impression would this leave? Nobody would neither forgive her nor like her if she were to act like this in reality. She then decided to go back to the hospital and rest there before her shift would start. Yes, her insomnia and fatigue must have been the ones to blame. There was no way she would have thought about such an awful thing with her own will. Maybe, she could have even requested Teruteru to bring her food to the hospital from now on in order to avoid more unnecessary conflicts from unfolding.
After walking in the path towards the hospital for a good 15 minutes, she has finally seen the top of the hospital's roof between the countless amount of palm trees that was surrounding the tropical island. With the temporary excitement that has appeared upon acknowledging the fact that she has almost arrived at her destination, she ran towards the front of the building in an impressive speed for someone like her.
She quickly forced open the main entrance door and hastily went to her own room in which she has been staying in for the last few days she was working in shifts. Without giving a second thought, she untied the knot of her formal work apron and threw it to the other side of the room. She then approached the soft couch in a fast pace and plummeted face down onto it.
She panted for a few seconds while laying on the couch out of exhaustion before letting herself get comfortable. She hasn't realized how much sleep she lacked up until now. Some of her classmates did point it out to her but she always thought that they were exaggerating the situation but now she even found them to be oblivious to the challenges she has been facing. Fortunately, this negative impression of her classmates wouldn't stay in her mind for long thanks to the fatigue that kicked in from the moment she fell onto the couch.
She sighed out of relief and moved over to her right side while holding onto a soft pillow to make one end comfy. After resisting sleep for so long, she has finally given in and closed her eyes. Despite being hungry because of skipping today's lunch, her desire for sleep easily overcame the aching of her stomach which was causing her intestines to feel like they were clammy.
Her surroindings started blacking out and the noises proceeded to alleviate little by little. İt felt as if she was reuniting with something that she hasn't felt for years and Mikan would later on remember this nap to be the most peaceful sleep of her entire late adolescence years.
