Valentine's Day

Summary:

Based on a prompt: Person A tries to make Person B feel better after their Valentine's Day plan goes wrong, and then Person B realizes they would rather have Person A anyways.

Prequel to Sex and Baths, but you can just read it as a oneshot instead

Notes:

Like I said in the summary, this is a prequel but both books can be read on their own! I might make a third one which is the stuff between this and the sex scene BUTTT that's a big maybe. Anyways, enjoy!

Work Text:

Valentines Day. Kokichi thought it was severely overrated. A day for love? Really? What a cheesy and disgusting thing, why would you need a day for love if you could just show it everyday naturally? And for the people who get together on Valentine's? He could understand that a *litttttle* more, but that didn't change the fact that it was cheesy! But he'd still go check out this stupid Valentine's Day events that went on in town. Only because his members suggested they should cause some mischief there! Not because he actually wanted to go check out what the fuss was. No, *neverrrr*. He wore a basic hoodie, and some jeans, stuffing his hands into the single pocket he had. After all, it was still winter, so it was a bit chilly, but not too cold. Not that he really felt the cold anyways.

Whilst on his way there, he saw a familiar boy sitting at a bench, hands clasped together and head hanging low. He noticed a pink box besides the boy, a disgustingly cute ribbon wrapped around it. A bow tied with so much care, Kokichi's certain that that now was cared for more than he ever was. Without thinking much of it, Kokichi wandered over, hands behind his head, stood in one of his many usual poses. "Now now, what's Shyhara-Chan doing here. Say, is my beloved waiting for someone?" Kokichi teased, noticing how he didn't even groan. Usually, his teasing would get a groan out of Shuichi, but not this time. The leader cocked his head to the side, hearing some voices behind him, noticing Amami and Akamatsu walking along the path. Hand in hand.

Kokichi's gaze flicked between them and Shuichi, before the parts came together like magic. "Ohhh, did Shyhara-Chan want to ask Akamatsu-San out for Valentine's?" He spoke, eyes on the pair walking annoyingly closer to them. If Akamatsu saw his beloved looking so down, he knew that it wouldn't take long before the boy cracked. Or even just admitted to his feelings immediately. And then he would avoid the new couple walking around, and hide in his room. And that was probably the worst case scenario right now. Even though it was total stupidity, he didn't want his beloved being all depressed in his room, and then listen to Akamatsu's oblivious whining, wondering why her best friend won't hang out with her.

So, Kokichi walked forward, and grabbed Shuichi's wrists, much to the surprise of the other, blurting out the only thing that came to his head. "Do you wanna go to that Valentine's event with me." Shuichi, understandably, looked at him with wide eyes, his mouth opening, but said nothing. And rather than answering the question, he asked the wrong things. "Since when did you like Valentine's Day?" Kokichi groaned and moved his hands off of the other, moving them to his own hips, glaring at the boy. "Is that a yes or no. Because I could be causing mischief right now! It's hard to get some time alone with the Supreme Leader, so you should be jumping at this opportunity!" He took Shuichi's laughter as a start, glad that it at least lifted his mood a little. "Sure Ouma, I'll go with you."

The *walk* into town was rather pleasant actually. Despite the fact that there were a bunch of cheesy couples all around them, Kokichi could distract himself enough to the point where they were just background images. And, he had managed to get them to avoid Akamatsu and Amami too! He had realized his beloved hadn't actually noticed the two of them walking towards them, so he figured he'd better run before they managed to get to him. So, he snatched Shuichi's hat and chocolates, taking off running with a "GOTTA CATCH ME FIRST!" much to Shuichi's disapproval, but chased after him almost immediately. Kokichi came to a stop at the entrance, Shuichi right behind him, the detective taking his hat back.

Kokichi grabbed ahold of Shuichi's hand, and began to take a nice leisurely stroll through the place. Such cringy and corny romantic music was playing, such ugly decorations. The floor was covered in petals and those weird hearts, and Kokichi half regretted even asking to come here. Of all the places he could've suggested, *this* is what he had to suggest? He was disappointed in himself, but Shuichi seemed to be in awe, so maybe he could let it slide for now. "Anything caught my beloved's eyes yet?" Kokichi asked him, noticing how he slowed up to stare at one stall in particular. And oh my god, was that one massive bear. It had to be almost the same size as him, there was no doubt about it. "You wanna play?" Kokichi wondered, a pretty fitting blush on Shuichi's face. "Uh, only if you-" "Go for it." Kokichi cut him off, and followed him over to the stall.

It didn't seem too difficult, just throwing some tacky heart shapes into the just as tacky heart on the wall. Apparently you only had thirty seconds and you needed to get the whole thing full. If that didn't seem like a rip off, the amount of Yen it costs was certainly one. And, unsurprisingly, Shuichi paid for it, not even once either. He had about three goes before Kokichi began to get bored. Was it really that difficult, or was Shuichi just bad at it. "Alright kid, times up, you lost *again*." The smugness on the guy's face wasn't sitting right with Kokichi, so he even decided to pay for a go himself. Shuichi insisted he would, but Kokichi wasn't letting him.

*One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.*

And he smashed it. Didn't even take him half of the time. "Now if you don't mind, get me that big bear. Carefully too, we only accept the best products." The guy did as he was told, and handed it to Shuichi, Kokichi smugly grinning at him as they walked away. Once they had gotten to a safe enough distance, the leader came to a halt and held onto his partners wrist to get him to do the same. "You didn't have to do that, you know." Shuichi spoke first, the boy rolling his eyes. "Yeah well, I didn't like that guy." The detective gave him a small smile, before he held the bear out to him. "It was actually for you.." He mumbled, and Kokichi lifted his eyebrows. Wow, Shuichi was also the cheesy kind. God, he should've guessed that from the box of chocolates, which he hasn't taken back still.

"O-Only if you want it.. obviously." Kokichi decided that maybe, just maybe, he could live with ONE cheesy moment. So he took the bear off Shuichi, and dangled it behind his back so it was easier to carry. "Aw, aren't you adorable, my beloved! Trying to win me a bear. Nishishi, I won't let you ever forget this~" And this time, he got the groan he was hoping for out of Shuichi. That was how the day continued. He noticed Shuichi trying to do little things for him, fail, then Kokichi would step in and the detective would admit he was trying to do it for Kokichi, followed by the leader teasing him. It was odd, mind you. The day in general, he meant. He wasn't expecting to have as much fun as he was, but here he is. With Shuichi of all people, going through all these stalls like it's a speed run.

To end off the trip, Shuichi bought them a spot for the Ferris wheel. Honestly, such a stupid cliché. But still, Kokichi didn't say anything against the idea. Maybe he would at least get a better view up here. AND he'd get some moments of privacy with his beloved, so he'd say the positives outweigh the negatives. "So, Shumai." Kokichi began as the wheel started to move, teddy bear on the clean floor as it was too big to keep anywhere else. "You've been trying to impress me this entire trip, hmm?" His question was basically answered when the one in questioning turned away and blushed, Kokichi moving a wee bit closer to him. "It was more of a thanks. For coming here with me. I think I'd be in bed by now." Kokichi almost, ALMOST, frowned at the idea. It seemed a bit depressing, someone like Shuichi just sat alone in his room.

"Mm? I'm surprised no-one asked you out." Which was the truth. It wasn't difficult to see why either. Shuichi was relatively smart (though he seemed to lack common sense in situations like these), he was a detective, a pretty impressive job in Kokichi's mind, he was a rather sweet guy, he was.. pretty. Kokichi could probably list reasons for days and he'd still have more to say. Shuichi shook his head with a laugh, staring out towards the view. "I'm way too introverted for people." It was rather silly that people were actually bothered by these things. Yes, it made sense, but if the rest of the person was completely your type, would they really let something as small as that get in the way of a potentially great relationship? It was stupid, such stupidity. Humans were getting rather dumb.

The two of them fell silent momentarily, before Shuichi asked a question of his own. "Why'd you invite me?" He simply started off with, adding on a: "when you could just be mucking around with your organisation." Valid question, but an easy one to answer. "You looked pretty depressed on that bench. Besides, I knew that if Akamatsu had approached you when she was, you would've spent the day locked in your room. And if my beloved wants a cheesy day out at this terrible event, then I *guessed* I could make time for him." And then it went silent again. Kokichi had been staring out the window when he had asked his question, but a sniffle caught his attention.

"Shit, are you crying..?" Kokichi spun around rather quickly, and placed a hand on the other boys cheek to make the detective face him. No tears yet, but he could definitely see the glossiness in Shuichi's eyes to suggest that some may be on the way. "Why are you..-" He didn't even get to finish his sentence before he felt Shuichi's arms around him, chin on his shoulder. Kokichi might've froze for a moment then. It was rather.. unexpected he'd say, but still, eventually, wrapped a single arm around Shuichi's shoulders, leaving the other as it was so his thumb could rub along his face in a soothing back and forth motion.

"Thank you, Kokichi. You've made Valentine's Day worth it." Kokichi couldn't help but smile a little to himself, and even register the fluttery feeling in his chest. It was.. weird. He didn't hate it, but he also really hated it. It made no sense to him. "After all that consideration, I'm glad that the right date came to me after all." That was sweet.. wait, DATE? THIS WAS A *DATE*?? Kokichi punched the back of Shuichi's shoulder and dug his face into the side of his hair. "Stopppp. You're making me feel all weird." He heard Shuichi laughing, so he knew he'd have to get his own little revenge. "Well if this is a date, do I get my goodbye kiss once we're out of here?" Kokichi spoke, and even purposefully pulled away from the hug to make sure he could see Shuichi's face. Dead. Silence. Deep blush on his cheeks.

*Sigh* wasn't his beloved just so adorable.
