Work Text:
Looking back on it, Virgil was pretty sure he knew how he had gotten here, he was more than sure that this was his fault, though his boyfriend Remus would disagree. The self destruction had finally gotten the better of him, and he didn’t really want to do anything else, the obsessions, the revenge, everything had finally gotten to him. All in all, Virgil hated what had happened, and more importantly, who he had become. He didn’t even really know that himself as he gripped the side of the sink so hard his knuckles turned white. The reflection he was in the mirror was taunting him, the deadened eyes, cracked lips, and scars from face picking all reflected back at him in an even more evil, distorted way.
“You’re a fucking monster! This is all your fucking fault!” He screamed at his reflection, trying to get something out of himself. He wasn’t entirely sure what the effect was, nor the desired outcome, but he continued to scream at himself until his face was red, throat was raw, and he was sobbing.
Everything was building, mourning, it was getting too much for him, even the sound of his own breathing, so he did the only thing he could think of, grabbing a bottle of expired narcotic level pain medication, he opened the cap and swallowed the entire thing with a mouth full of water from the sink. He still had time before his death so he fired off a text to his boyfriend, knowing it would be his last.
Remus you are my everything, my starry night with bombs in the background, my deep sea ocean, my kraken, my dead body in a flower garden, and I love you so much. I love you so much and I can’t really imagine my life without you, however, I’ve reached a point where I can’t even imagine my life, so I’ve decided it’s best for me to die. I love you, and I know that you’ll move on and find someone even better than me, someone who makes you happy, and someone who deserves you. Not me, I hope you don’t get too hung up on this.
After the text was sent, Virgil sat down on the couch in his apartment and turned on Tangled, wanting the last thing he saw to be comforting, wholesome, and beautiful. The movie played on and somewhere between Mother Gothel stabbing Flynn Ryder and the ‘where are they now’ Virgil took his last few breaths, it was a peaceful thing for him, and he was happy he did it.
Remus was currently working, no idea what he was going to come home to. He worked as a cashier at a shop for all things strange and unusual, it was a job that he loved very much and he was very good at. Though the day started out normal and fine, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very off, and though he wanted to check on those he cared about, the store was much too busy to do that.
Once his break finally arrived, Remus got to his phone and went to text his boyfriend and his brother, opening his phone he saw the text from Virgil, his heart rate sped up and he panicked, but he knew this happened before, and Virgil usually reached out to his brother Roman if there was something that wrong, so hopefully he had done so. With the confidence that Roman and Virgil were on a call, Remus got back to work, convincing himself that he was just being paranoid and he would go back home to see his boyfriend coping, probably watching a Disney movie.
When Remus entered the house, he saw the end credits for Tangled and saw Virgil asleep on the couch, except something was very wrong, his chest wasn’t moving. He was in denial, so he called his brother to come over, the sickening feeling in his stomach growing sour.
Roman arrived to the house in record time and saw Remus pacing,
“Hey what’s going on Remus, it sound kinda urgent on the phone” Weakly, Remus pointed to Virgil on the couch and in a broken voice replied,
“I think he’s dead” The words hung in the air heavy and thick, Roman went over to Virgil and checked his pulse, recoiling at how cold his skin was. His best friend really was dead.
Together, the two brothers sat in silence, both crying, Remus had lost his boyfriend, and Roman his best friend. They held each other as the paramedics carried out Virgil’s lifeless body wrapped up in a white sheet, it played like a slow motion movie, and when the door closed behind them, a part of them died.
