Work Text:
Otabek is at Viktor’s annual Christmas party once again. And just as last year he is in charge of the music. It was near 11pm. Soon the new year will come. Now he puts the collected tracks he chose for the party and steps aside from the DJ’s booth to join his friends on the dance floor
His focus on music distracted him from the intoxication of the alcohol in his system but as he is stepping down the stairs Otabek feels how the world his spinning around him.
No, he is wrong. The world doesn’t spin around him but him. The laser lights flow through his hair making them in various shades of pinks, purples and blues. Glitter from his makeup in sync with the lights also shines in way which will leave you no choice but to catch your attention. However it’s the eyes, those eyes sparkling brighter than the glitter surrounding them. Instead of their usual emerald green appearing as ocean lagoon.
Otabek knows how much he hates the nickname but that’s all he can think of right now. A fairy. Fairy from fairytales here came alive like a real Christmas magic story. Expect Otabek is no prince with shining armor and Yuri is the exact opposite of a fairy when he opens his mouth.
The year will change but one thing will remain constant.
JJ said he needs to hook up with someone. He tried to connect with other people, asked couple of boys and girls on dates even. Only to cancel them an hour after the invitation.
Leo said he should confess and finally be done with this. He can’t count the amount of times he opened their text messages wrote a whole paragraph about his declaration of love and deleted all the words halfway through.
In the end Otabek did neither.
Yuri is dancing like there’s no tomorrow. Which means when tomorrow eventually comes he’s gonna regret all the decisions that led to consumption of alcohol which inevitably resulted him humiliating himself with his ungrateful moves, the ones if Lilia sees, the woman will throw his sorry ass on the streets. But for now Yuri’s head is in cloudy haze with no care for the world.
Besides him Mila, his sister not by blood but by choice or force. Depends on who ask. She says something to him but the music is too loud for coherent talk. Instead she nudges him on the shoulder and raises her eyebrows at someone who’s behind him. Yuri turns and sees what he couldn’t hear from Mila.
Otabek, slowly stepping down the stairs. Yuri can’t help the smile that forms on his face at the sight of his friend. He rushes towards him, not having patience to even let the man finish walking down.
“Hey”, Yuri grabbed the railing to stabilize himself
“Hey”, Beka greeted him with a small smile of his own and Yuri felt how the one on his face stretched.
Otabek’s hand found his ear, teasing the new hex he got pierced on his 17th birthday. Lilia nearly fainted when she saw.
“Looks good”
He grabbed Beka’s hand and pulled him along with him.
“Come dance with me, Beka !”
And who was Otabek to refuse him. Black manicured hand wrapped around his bigger one and his heartbeat became double. Otabek long before learned that resisting his feelings was a lost battle.
As Yuri spun them his chest burned with fire. From his side he could barely manage to see the glances their friends were throwing at them. Mila was smirking, JJ was whistling and the rest of the faces blurred together. Only one was covering his entire view.
And it was unfair Otabek thought, that everyone in their circle had figured out and only Yuri remained oblivious. How easy it was for this boy to be come the cause of is sleepless nights, the reason of his despair and delight. What use are his smiles and tears if they don’t reach to him.
Otabek put a rest to his distractive thoughts for now and tried to focus on the moment before him. As his eyes found the blue-green mist it was so easy to get lost in them.
Yuri was happy, so happy he feels he can reach the moon tonight. This sense of happiness foreign to him before meeting Otabek in Barcelona. This absolute dork, biggest sap in the world, a man with a hart bigger than this god damn universe was the next reason beside his grandpa and skating that could pull genuine smiles from Yuri.
He’ll never admit even at a gun point but Yuri truly loves everyone who was present today at the party. Yes even JJ. However Beka, he is special. Yuri feels that part of him will break without repair should his companion no longer be with him. Yuri didn’t realize how his grip on the older boy tightened, intending to never letting go of him.
Yuri was afraid, so afraid to put a name other than friendship on feelings he had for Beka. He was fine with whatever they had. Yuri is greedy only when it comes winning gold in skating. Since he was little he got to learn to be glad with whatever little he had. He didn’t have a father or caring mother but he had his grandpa and it was enough to have a family. He didn’t have multiple clothes of various colors and shapes but the ones he had were warm and comfortable and it was enough. And with Otabek he has a friendship he never dared to hope for and it’s more than enough.
“So how was the party? And if you call it lame I’ll blame the DJ”, Beka leaned closer and smirk.
“The DJ was the only reason why this party didn’t become lame”, Yuri bit back.
“Really? Well for me personally it was this punk who smashed everyone on the dance floor”
“Shut up!”, Yuri could feel how the tips of his ears heated.
“You know when you scowl I feel as though it’s Potya who’s looking at me”
Yuri giggled at that. They continued to aimlessly sway. Suddenly the music changed from a slow one to an energetic. Everyone came on the dance floor along with them.
Otabek remembered putting this song on as the last one before the clock turns and changes the years. He felt giddy with excitement as if he was ten. All worries washed away from him leaving only joy in his hart. He was here with Yuri and their friends, surrounded with love. Yes love! So much of it, it burst out from his rib cage like fireworks. And Otabek is ready! He is ready to be flamed alive!
Yuri danced and danced and danced. The song was coming to end and everyone started to count down. Confused he glanced at his phone. It was 11:59 !
“Ten !”, Beka screamed.
“Nine !”, Yuri screamed back.
“Eight !”
“Seven !”
Their smiles reached from ear to ear.
“Six !”
“Five !”
They were laughing so hard they couldn’t focus on counting.
“Four !”
People were shouting in the back ground. Yuri’s eyes were anchored on Beka’s. Somehow his face was closer than before.
“Three !”
Despite the heaving alcohol diluted in his veins Yuri’s vision was clear. He could not blink away as eyes of soil and ember held him.
“Two !”
Their foreheads resting against one another.
“One !”
Soft lips touched his own.
