Dabi's Favorite Singer

Summary:

The young man was swaying gently on his socked feet, clothed in a too large sweater, while his face was partially covered with the white hair of the kid in pajamas on his arms. He kissed the crown of her head and then continued with his heavenly singing, raising his head a bit to give a dazzling smile to the person behind the camera.

“What’s the phone for, Tou?” He asked, stopping the beautiful melody.

“Just proving a point,” the clear voice of Dabi came through the device. At the same time, the man curved a bushy eyebrow at him, looking fondly at the camera.

Before he could ask for Dabi to clarify, the kid steered awake. “Dad?”

“Sorry Eri,” the man kissed her head one more time, “Tou was just bein' silly.”

Notes:

So… I couldn’t get this piece out of my head, so I decided to write it down to stop it from popping in my mind.

It’s just something sweet and silly to relax for a bit, hope you all like it!

No TW in this one I believe, just some swearing words, but not much.

Wish you all a nice day and a great time reading! Don’t forget to give kudos or leave a comment, they make my day!

Work Text:

“... So thanks for coming to all the League members, it’s a pleasure to have you all here with us today.” The peppy interviewer got more comfortable on her plush armchair while the crowd drowned them in shouts and claps of excitement. She waited for them to calm down before continuing, “I have to admit, I was really excited when you accepted my invitation to the show, I’m a big fan.”

“Thanks to you~ for having us!” Said a cheerful Toga, the unorthodox violinist of the band, from her position on the large couch at the side of the interviewer, sitting comfortably between the plush and colorful cushions. “I watch your show e~very day, you’re even prettier in person with your lovely red hair! I really love the color red after all!” She finished with a too big smile and a dazed look on her eyes, showing too many teeth to be comfortable.

“Oh my! Thank you! You’re too!” The hostess took her own face in her hands, making a cooing sound that the crowd imitated. “You’re a sweetheart. And talking about sweethearts, a little birdie told me that you’re in a relationship right now! I heard it’s pretty new too, tell us about the good news!” The people cheered before going quiet again to be able to hear Toga’s gossip.

“Ooh! Ochako-chan is the prettiest ! We met almost a year ago and just started dating. It has been so~ wonderful to be able to share my life like that with my best friend!” At her other side, Dabi let out a snort that Toga ignored to keep whooshing over her partner, “and ya’ know, for our one month anniversary she, -Ochako-chan- prepared a romantic picnic under the cherry blossoms. It was gorgeous, -she’s gorgeous- but she was more stunning than the view, of course!” She winked at the end and the hostess laughed at it. “Ah~ Ochako-chan’s the best! Love you~!” She blew a kiss to the camera and made a heart with her hands over her chest.

“I see you’re in the honeymoon phase.” The crowd chuckled fondly at it. “I’m glad you’re both happy with the relationship! And I’m sure everything would be smooth sailing with a good mentor like Dabi-san at your side, not just as a musician, but as an adviser on how to have an amazing relationship too.” This time, the interviewer met Dabi’s eyes for the next question while the vocalist and composer of the band sighed. “I must say, congratulations, Dabi-san! We heard that you and your partner had recently adopted a wonderful little girl.” The people clapped and cooed.

“Yes, we did,” he replied with his smooth but cold voice, “she’s a lovely kid-”

“She gifted us crayon drawings of us over the stage!” Yelled Twice, the drummer, not being able to control his happiness over the acceptance of their little rag tag group. “ She’s the best! ” The crowd awed imagining the usually amateurish drawing that every child does.

“Of course she is, she’s my kid.” Dabi glared at Twice like he had offended him, the protectiveness rolling off of him in waves.

“She sure sounds like a sweet kid! We’re happy for the three of you!” The people clapped again at the same time that the hostess continued with the inquiry. “And of course we’re all asking ourself the same question, being the only kid among the band members; is she the League number one fan?” The people stilled in anticipation, watching Dabi sour expression with apprehension.

“No.” The crowd and the hostess gasped.

“No?!”

Shigaraki, the band's second vocalist and guitarist, chuckled darkly. “Well no, she’s not, the little demon is too much like his father for that.” He scratched his neck lightly, looking at Dabi from the corner of his eyes while the other aimed his intense glare at him instead. “What? Something to say?”

“At least Ochako-chan is my number one fan,” pipped Toga, but they ignored her, so she responded by sticking her tongue out.

“Shut up, boss,” Dabi drawled, putting his arm over the back of the couch and his ankle over his opposite knee.

“I’m the League number one fan!” Shouted Twice while throwing his arms up, before contradicting himself with; “ I hate the band! They’re awful!

“You’re a sore loser, you know it’s the truth-” Tried to continue Shigaraki but he was interrupted.

“Guys, guys,” intervened Spinner, the bassist and sometimes keyboardist of the band, raising his hands in a placating manner. “Let’s not start fighting, ok?”

“Whatever,” huffed Shigaraki at the same time Dabi looked away.

“Well, it seems the innocent question was a bit of a sore spot! I wasn’t expecting that!” The hostess made a silly face to the crowd, raising her eyebrows and smiling awkwardly, so the crowd laughed like it was all scripted to go south. “So, in that case… I’m a bit worried about asking…” She whispered to the camera, “but,” she addressed the band again, with firm determination on her face, “I must ask; who is Dabi’s favorite musician?”

The drummers started and the crowd held their breath. But, instead of looking excited, Dabi glared at the camera with a deadpan expression, -that they of course zoomed in-.

When the drums stopped Dabi attacked mercilessly: “I don’t have one.”

The crowd cried in protest, in fact, the hostess was so surprised that she let out an outrageous “No!” At the information. “How can that be? Shigaraki-san just told us that you and your daughter share the same favorite musician, didn’t he?”

“He implied it, never said it,” clarified Dabi, “like the cryptic bastard he is,” he murmured at the end but the microphone attached to his black shirt picked it anyways.

“What was that?” Shigaraki’s voice had gone an octave lower, with his brows twitching in barely concealed rage.

Before Dabi could answer with an aggressive remark, the interviewer hastened to cry; “I think we’re due for a commercial! See you all after the break!”

The outro song started playing and the camera panned out, showing Dabi and Shigaraki jumping to their feet and going dangerously close, while Toga and Twice cheered them throwing their hands around and using the cushions as projectiles to destabilize them. On the other side of the couch, Spinner hid his face on his hands, with his elbows digging on his knees and a clear tiredness on his shoulders. The hostess could relate, but instead of adopting a similar position, she waved to the camera with a twitching brow and a tight smile on, just about to pop a vein on her forehead.

The interview definitively didn't go as she planned.

Anyway , she thought, it’s not like people would focus only on the fight, right?, right?

No, her thoughts didn’t have a mad edge to them, you’re just reading too much into it… She was just a bit… worried . Let’s call it that.

It started with a soft hum and a pretty dark room. Afterwards the video moved, shaking with the walking of the person holding the phone and showing the floor more than anything else. The sound became clearer the further they advanced, till the person came to a stop in front of an open door. On the other side there was a young man of golden locks, the light of the moon shone over him, turning his hair silver around the edges. He was swaying gently on his socked feet, clothed in a too large sweater, while his face was partially covered with the white hair of the kid in pajamas on his arms.

He was clearly attractive, even in the low light anyone would agree the man was gorgeous; from the tips of his perfectly styled hair, to the sharpness of his golden eyes and to the softness of his round cheeks. But before he could ask for Dabi to clarify, the kid steered awake. “Dad?” The little girl didn’t even move that much, she just mumbled it on the man’s plush sweater, too comfortable in that position, yet finding it strange that the song had stopped.

“Sorry Eri,” he kissed her head one more time, “Tou was just bein' silly.”

“‘s ‘kay,” she murmured, looking up through her lashes with her big round eyes and pouty lips, being too cute for her own good. “Can… can you…?” She trailed off, unsure if it was okay for her to ask anyone to do anything.

“Of course, baby bird,” and the man kept singing, ignoring Dabi and the camera for the time being, content to focus all his attention on the little treasure dozing off on his arms.

The video moved again, this time going away from the charming scene, back to the place it started. When it stopped moving, it was changed to the front camera, getting a close up of Dabi’s mischievous smirk. “Told you so.”

"So that was what ya' were filmin' last night," stated Hawks from his position on the couch with his phone in one hand and the other buried in his husband hair, watching over Eri who was working on her calligraphy; she was carefully writing each letter of the alphabet with a different color, making them as pretty as she could to then use them to form basic words.

"Hmn?" Dabi couldn't say he had heard Hawks completely, not when the man was passing his hand through his black hair absently but constantly, and having his head cushioned on his husband's lap wasn't helping his concentration either. Dabi even dared to kiss the clothed thigh that was under him, patting the knee in encouragement.

Hawks snorted. "Ya' not even listenin', ain't ya'?" He looked down at his husband but found that the man was observing their daughter's work, not really focusing on the action, more like doing it subconsciously, so Hawks let his eyes wander there again.

The scissors at the low table worried him too, but he kept repeating to himself that she was old enough to use them, and that they were kid scissors, they weren't supposed to be able to really hurt. They couldn't even cut paper, for Pete's sake!

He went back to the phone, reading over all the comments the twitter post had gained over the hours it had been up. He should be mad, -he knew that logically,- he should be seething because his husband posted the video without asking him, without even telling him he was filming it just so he could tweet it. Instead he was surprised; the people kept praising his singing, calling them cute, congratulating them on their beautiful family. It was kind of a shock, because usually the fans didn't like idols' partners much, as if they would have some claim over the musician if they were single. Of course the post had some of those comments, but they were few and far in-between.

He knew he wasn't a bad singer per se, he couldn't deny that he sometimes entertained the idea of becoming an idol or a professional singer, to stop being just a model, like so many people loved to tell him, as if it was something to be ashamed of… He didn't even know if he wanted that kind of life, but maybe… with all this support…

"Hey Dabs, ya' reckon I could become a singer?" He asked the room, not daring to take a peak at Dabi's expression.

Before his husband could react, their kid was jumping off her sitting position on the floor to come like a bullet at him, worried out of her mind. "Are you… Are you going to be a singer too?"

"Baby bird, it's ok," Hawks picked her up, kicking his husband off his lap with a nudge of his thighs and replacing him with their daughter. "Why are ya' so worried 'bout it?"

Dabi made a sound of protest from his now sitting position, but Hawks ignored him. Eri was wringing her little hands on the skirt of her red dress, with her head casted down in apparent distress. "If you… when…" She didn't know how to ask, how to convey the feeling that squeezed her chest just by thinking about Keigo being an idol like Dabi was. But neither of her fathers interrupted her, they just gave her encouraging smiles and a gentle hug. "If you become a singer… would you go too? Like Dabi-san does?"

"Oh." Indeed, Hawks finally understood what was troubling the little chick so much. Dabi's job was demanding, it made him be gone for hours to end some days, worse if the band had a concert or, bird's forbid, a tour. Eri hadn't experienced one of those yet, but she could already imagine it just using as reference the hours that Dabi worked normally.

So, yes, she didn't want her new dad to do the same. She knew it was selfish of her, but she had been told that it was fine to be, to want things and ask for them. Yet this time she was a bit afraid, for they could get annoyed at her, think of her as a burden, someone who demanded too much time and patience for the young and busy couple.

She didn't need to worry.

For Hawks understood, he had taken a vacation from his modeling job the months that Eri had been in their lives, so she was used to him being around all day long. It was normal for her to want it to stay that way, and Hawks had to admit he liked it too. It wasn't like he really needed to work, not with Dabi's career being in its prime, so he didn't mind being a househusband for a while. Moreover, he didn't wish to be an idol; to wear your heart on your sleeve, and to cut yourself open in front of millions with your songs. He didn't want that.

He liked being a model, even if he would wait for Eri to start going to school to return to active work, he was content with his career choice.

A smile took over his face, his eyes crinkling with love at the little chick. "Don't worry chicklin', I ain't goin' anywhere."

Eri finally raised her head, her eyes full of surprise and a tentative happiness. "You're not?"

"Nope," he childishly popped to 'p'. "Bein' an idol is overrated anyways."

"Hey!" Dabi made an offended sound, but the tick of his lips betrayed his true emotions. "For your information, being an idol is the best."

"Yeah, sure." Hawks rolled his eyes, with the smile still plastered on, aware of the naive eyes that were tracking his every movement. "But ya' know what? The best is bein' this baby bird's dad."

The kid blinked rapidly, still processing the words. "Well yeah, nothing can top that," finished Dabi with a mischievous smirk.

Eri sniffed, she trembled and tried to stop the waterworks from breaking, but it was in vain. "Oh chicklin'."

They hugged her with all their might, reassuring her they were there to stay, that she was there to stay, and no one would take her away.

She cried, but she smiled too, it was small and fragile, with a gentle happiness that her parents cherished.

And she cherished them back.
