Call Out

Summary:

Enid's mother thinks a duck decoy and hunting trip will help her wolf out. Only...

Notes:

Disclaimer - I don't own Wednesday. This was written for Froday Winter Calendar 2022, the prompt being "four calling birds".

Work Text:

Ew, no,” Enid glared at the decoy duck her mother set on the kitchen table in front of her. She looked up at her mother, frowning while her ear remained glued to the phone. “Why are you giving me that?”

I thought a hunting trip with the rest of the pack may help you finally wolf out,” her mother said.

Um, no,” Enid pushed the duck over with a single-colored nail, far from impressed with yet another interference from her mother. “Oh, just my mom. She didn’t hear me when I told her and dad that Wednesday would be coming for a visit, so she planned a hunting trip after I told her I wasn’t going to do the whole summer camp thing and I’d wolf out on my own terms.”

Enid!” her mother said.

Enid frowned, making her colored nails go out to threaten her mother. “Yeah. I’ll talk to you later, Ajax. When she’s not hovering? And yeah, I mentioned that I did.” She hung up, her nails tapping at the table after they went back in. “Seriously?”

What?”

I was on the phone with my boyfriend,” Enid said.

Yes, but….”

I told you that I would wolf out on my own time,” Enid said, sighing and rolling her eyes at her mother. “Hold on. I’m getting a text from Thing. He’s excited about getting to visit as well.”

Enid!” Her mother said, her eyes going wide.

If this is about the whole wolf out thing,” Enid frowned. “Hold on. It’s an unknown caller.”

Then don’t answer it!”

Enid did, frowning, then her eyes went wide. “Oh! Pugsley. Why are you calling instead of Wednesday? Oh, wait. It’s Wednesday. She doesn’t have a phone. You want what?” She frowned. “I guess I could find something for you to blow up.” And then, she looked at the decoy duck. “Would a decoy duck do?”

Enid!”

Come on. He’ll get more use out of it than me,” Enid frowned. “And yes, Pugsley, I can see if I can find more of them. I’ll ask my dad.” She hung up the phone. “He just wanted to know if there would be anything for him to blow up when he got here.”

Enid!” Her mother stared, her jaw-dropping. “You’re far more concerned with that rather than the first time wolfing out?”

Of course, I’m not worried about that,” Enid sighed. “Hold on. It’s another unknown,” and then. “Wednesday? I thought you didn’t have a phone. Oh! Xavier got you one! You should so go out with him! Okay, so I know I might be overstepping, but think about it. See you when….”

Enid.”

Uh, yes. She is still bothering me about wolfing out. Even after I told her—yeah, I did tell her I’ve wolfed out,” Enid said, getting up from the table. “I think she was too busy going over her plans on how to get me to wolf out even after my dad congratulated me and said your coming was okay.”

Wait? You’ve wolfed out?” her mother said. “Why didn’t I hear about this from Principle Williams?”

Uh, because Principle Williams was dead already?” Enid said. “I told you about that and everything that happened at school. Why it was let out early, and all.”

I thought you were exaggerating.”

Enid rolled her eyes, getting up, and pushing the decoy duck with her finger. “Yeah. I’m going to go and talk to my dad about that right now. I think he’ll be more help than my mom regarding things like—potpourri. Potpourri’s not candy? I—Pugsley believes it is? And he likes it? Weird. I’d die if I ate potpourri.” And she walked away, her mother staring after her.
