Black roses and a kiss

Summary:

Wednesday's mind was flooding with thoughts. She wanted to investigate what had just happened. She wanted to tell Enid that this moment had been the most thrilling one she had had in months in order to calm her down. She wanted to do many things, but there was a thought that overwhelmed the others; a strange attraction to Enid after seeing how deadly her transformation could be.

Notes:

If you're here after that awful summary, I guarantee you, the story's not as bad as those lines. Hahahaha.

Chapter 1: The Evil Inside

Chapter Text

After being investigated, almost murdered and getting involved in a multiple homicide case that ended in the resurrection of the arch enemy of one her ancestors, Wednesday was thrilled to get back to Nevermore. The torture and stress she suffered during her first semester filled her head with ecstasy and high hopes for what might happen on this upcoming one.

Things weren’t the same for her roommate, unfortunately. Edid didn’t enjoy terror as she did which, for Wednesday, it was something weird, coming from a girl that could literally transform into a beast that could kill anyone easily.

Over their break, they had shared some conversations (always initiated by the blonde) thanks to the phone Xavier had given her. Her (self-proclaimed) friend seemed to be against going back. “What if something like that happens again and this time we can’t win?” the little, scared puppy had asked her with worry. It was amazing to think that the colorful, fearful girl could become a giant monster of over two meters that could kill someone in one bite or scratch.

After a few calculations on the probability of something similar happening again in this new semester (made by Wednesday, obviously), the werewolf had calmed down a little and started to create a fantasy on her head about the love and friendship that could come in the next six months. Now it was Wednesday the one who didn’t want to go. That sounded dreadful, and not in a good way.

And, in the blink of an eye, it was time to go back. It was as if vacations had been just a quick dream and, when she blinked again, she was in front of her parents, saying their goodbyes and wishing her a horrible semester, filled with torture and pain. There was no doubt her parents loved her. It was horrible.

Thing would accompany her again as her servant. “You owe me that for sneaking in without my permission last time, vain extremity”, she had told him. “Besides, I wouldn’t be able to endure Enid’s cries, telling me how much she misses you every five minutes”, she finished. Sure, the severed hand could actually understand what the girl was meaning to say. It wouldn’t be Enid the one missing his company. Or, at least, she wouldn’t be the only one.

When she finally set foot on her shared room again, she felt surprised to find it empty. Something told her Enid would be already there, putting up all her colorful and horrible things while singing some of her dreadful, cheerful songs she always listened to when cleaning or studying.

Without giving it much thought, she started to unpack. The girl would come and, it wasn’t like Wednesday was waiting for her. Even if her presence had become weirdly tolerable for her, she wouldn’t go as far as to call her a friend. She didn’t have friends. Friends are weakness. The colorful girl was more like… a pet. A little, noisy puppy that still needed a lot of training.

After a little while, she finished putting everything in place and was about to start writing a new chapter for her novel (the one she had exhaustively written and re-written during her time at home), when her roommate entered the room. As always: noisy, cheerful, and strenuous.

“Wednesday!” Before she could even finish turning around in her chair, the goth girl felt the blonde’s arms surrounding her in a hug.

“You know I hate contact.” The shorter girl said with a dry tone.

“We’ve come a long way for me to care about that.” The werewolf answered her, making her roll her eyes in annoyance but not moving a muscle to push her away from her.

The next few hours were the purest torture the black haired girl had ever experienced in her life. It seemed as if, through their text messages, the taller girl hadn’t been able to share even the ten percent of everything that happened to her during their vacations. From a new gum flavor she tried a few days ago, to the fact that she hadn’t been able to transform again since that time she did so in order to save her. Given the way the girl spoke as the words flew out her mouth, she couldn’t tell which thing was good and which one was bad. How could Enid always smile without her face getting permanently distorted in a heinous grin?

“And there’s still so much I wanna tell you…” She had to be joking… “But I’m hungry. You wanna come with me for a snack to the cafeteria? I’m sure everyone will be there right now.”

“No. I’ll find something later.” Knowing the blond would not be able to change her mind, she left her there, finally giving her some time to write again, not understanding how she had allowed her roommate to distracted for hours with her inconsequential blabbering about family fights and her surprising relationship failure through texts.

How was it that someone like her had become “tolerable” for Wednesday? It was a bigger mystery than the hyde, apparently.

Enid had been having some mixed feelings every time she thought about going back to Nevermore. Of course she wanted to see her friends and she likes to be in an environment full of quirky people like her but, she was scared something awful would happen again.

During the break, her relationship with Ajax had finished on mutual agreement. They had feelings for each other but, it had become apparent for them that they were more oriented to friendship than love. Still, she felt anxious about seeing him again. What if it wasn’t really a mutual agreement and she was the only one who saw it that way while he was just trying to play along in order to avoid further conflict?

Whatever it was, she would have to face it sometime soon but, fortunately for her, she had felt a boost of strength and confidence once she got back to her shared room and saw her best friend again, shattering her anxiety to pieces as soon as she saw those big, dark eyes of her.

All those bad thoughts she had, went away with the hug they had shared. It didn’t matter which words came out of her gothic friend, her actions spoke louder. It was obvious that the short but dangerous girl had her in the same esteem she did. Maybe, Wednesday would never accept it or even say it out loud, but they were friends and that is what matters.

So, when she came back from the cafeteria, she had brought some snacks for her roommate, knowing that, the reason she hadn’t wanted to accompany her was because she knew the place would be filled with enthusiastic students seeing each other again after the brake and talking loudly about everything they did during that time.

After giving the snacks to her and getting an “I didn’t ask you to bring me anything” in response, which Enid knew it was the goth’s way of saying “thank you”, the blonde continued talking about her break and everything that happened during them, until she finally reached the in-depth explanation on her break up with Ajax.

“Not surprising. You two were destined to fail.” Her friend told her with that characteristic tone she had and she couldn’t help but feel uneasy at that.

“Oh, really? And why is that?” The question left her mouth in an unexpected angry tone. It wasn’t as if that comment actually bothered or hurt her. Was it the fact that Wednesday seemed to have no faith in her relationship that bothered? Did the black haired girl thought she was not good enough to be in a relationship?

“I am not well versed when it comes to romance, Enid. I just know I could see it coming.” Her ambiguous answer caused her some confusion, but she knew her friend wasn’t trying to offend her. Maybe she just got automatically defensive after spending so much time with her mother again.

“Oh… Maybe you say that because he stood me up that one time, but it was an accident and we managed to get through it.” Over her hand, she felt a couple of pats of support, making her look down to where Thing was trying to console her.

“Mhm…” There was a brief moment of silence in the room after that while she thought about what else she had to tell Wednesday. She was almost finished telling her everything that happened during their time apart.

Suddenly, when she was about to start speaking again, an acute pain ran thought her body; Acute and familiar.

She turned to look at the window quickly, trying to find the moon. It was impossible this was happening right now because of two reasons. One: she had not turned again since her fight against the hyde, and two: tonight was not a full moon.

“Enid?” Her roommate’s voice resonated like an echo in her head as she felt her body starting to shift. “Shit. Thing, go to the library and bring back everything you can find on werewolves, quickly. Something’s wrong.” Those were the last words she could hear before she lost consciousness completely.

Wednesday looked in awe at the beast in front of her. Yes, Enid was taller than her, even with her boots on, but that didn’t compare at all to the creature that stood before her.  The grey, yellowish fur and the gigantic fangs that seemed to aim at her, made a shiver run down her spine.

“Enid, are you conscious?” She asked, slowly getting closer to the wolf in the room, trying to touch her.

Instead of an answer, she got scratched on her hand. It had happened so fast she only knew it actually happened when she saw her blood starting to spill on the floor.

Knowing her roommate was not conscious, Wednesday took a step back. She knew that, no matter how good she was in several martial arts, there was no chance of her overpowering a creature of that size. Running also didn’t seem like a plausible option. It was impossible to know what exactly was happening inside the blonde’s werewolf head.

For almost a minute, they just looked at each other without blinking. The girl’s transformation was magnificent. It was not only a clear torture for the girl every time she turned but, according to everything she knew about her species, Enid’s wolf was almost twice the size than the usual werewolf was. She didn’t remember it that way. Maybe because of the stress of that night or just because of the lack of vision due to the darkness of the forest but, she felt like something was different now.

A drop of blood fell on the floor, making a wet noise when it hit the small puddle the liquid had started to form there. That caught both of their attention, looking quickly at the source of the only noise in the room.

Wednesday turned her eyes back at the beast in front of her, realizing how her eyes seemed to get redder and redder as she kept looking at her blood like she was in a trance. Her instinct told her that was a good time to start running, but she didn’t. Curiosity about what was happening to her roommate in that state won over her.

After a powerful, loud howl that made her cover her ears with her hands, the wolf jumped on top of her, making her fall to the floor where the monster tried to bite her face off.

With all her strength, the goth girl managed to get out from beneath the creature on time, running towards the door in order to escape, but being stopped by an inhuman hand-paw mixture that took her from her left ankle and made her fall again.

She was going to die. The colorful girl who couldn’t even harm a fly was about to kill her and, judging by the look the wolf had on her face, she knew it wouldn’t be a quick death. She never expected such brutality from her. It was poetic. Beautiful.

Claws hit the floor just beside her head, taking her back to the reality of the moment and making her get ready to embrace her inevitable demise.

Enid started to gain her consciousness back. She could see images that, little by little, ran on her head as if she was watching some poorly edited video. It was like watching a movie in first person.

Wednesday was beneath her. Her face showed an expression she had never seen on the girl. It was logical. Her friend was terrified. She was sure that, on the black haired girl’s head, ideas about how Enid had betrayed her and now was going to kill her, were playing. She couldn’t allow that to happen but she didn’t even have control over herself.

She saw the goth managing to escape her grip and run towards the door only to be stopped by the monster that had taken control of her body. Despair clouded her mind as she saw the terror on her friend’s face.

She tried fighting against herself and taking control of her body again, but it was useless. Luckily, she managed to avoid a hit the monster directed to her roommate’s face, but she had no idea how she did that or how she could fully control that transformation.

Finally, she looked at how the black haired girl closed her eyes and smiles faintly, getting ready to receive that death she seemed to admire so much as she felt tears pooling in her eyes at the vision. Not only was she about to kill someone, she was about to kill her best friend.

Wednesday felt a couple of drops falling on her cheeks, making her open her eyes and finding Enid’s crying face in front of her. The beast had gone away and only the skinny, fragile girl remained in the room with her.

“Enid, you’re back.” Quickly, the goth girl got on her feet and took off her sweater, putting it over the blonde’s body, covering her nakedness after her transformation.

“I’m back?” Her roommate asked in a whisper, looking at her hands in incredulity. “I’m back.” This time, her words came out louder as a smile appeared on her face covered with tears.

“Right on time… Or perhaps not.  If my death ends up being more boring than this, I will have to blame you.” She said, trying to hide the fact that her heart was still beating faster than normal.

Without a warning, the blonde’s arms surrounded her in a tight hug as she listened to her cries directly on her right ear.

“I was so scared!” Wednesday patted her back lightly a few times, not knowing what else to do in that moment.

Her mind was flooding with thoughts.
