Work Text:

Shinichi had interacted with Kaitou Kid many times as Edogawa Conan, and he had always believed the phantom thief was a fellow alpha. Kid’s confident nature and teasing smirks had always indicated this to Shinichi, and besides, the stereotypes of omegas made it hard to believe that they would ever go out in the night and steal valuable gems. Of course, growing up alongside omegas like Ran had made Shinichi aware that not all omegas fit into the stereotypes, but the beliefs were hard to get rid of. So, Shinichi had thought that Kid was an alpha. If not, then he was a beta.

Oh, how wrong he was.

He found out the truth at a heist.

It started off as a normal heist. Suzuki Jirokichi was once again the owner of the jewel, which he had bought for the sole purpose of challenging Kid. Sonoko had eagerly dragged along Shinichi and Ran to the heist, but Shinichi definitely wasn’t going to complain. He had to admit, he enjoyed battling against the phantom thief. And there was something he didn’t want to admit as well: his feelings for Kid. It wasn’t a topic he thought about much, and he most certainly wasn’t going to think about it now.

Shinichi and his friends were brought to a private balcony residing over the heist room by one of the taskforce members, where they were then left to their own devices. Sonoko eagerly chatted to Ran about her Kid-sama and how she would capture his heart this time (unlikely, in Shinichi’s opinion). Shinichi leaned over the balcony and surveyed the room below. His eyes immediately caught on one of the members of the crowd. A man dressed in all black. Shinichi’s breath caught in his throat, but he shook off his uneasy feeling. We took down the Black Organization already. Whoever that is, he has nothing to do with them. He continued searching the floor.

Finally, he noticed a taskforce officer whose head was tilted upwards towards the balcony. As their eyes met, the officer gave a small grin, before casually turning towards the jewel again. Shinichi’s hands clutched the railing tightly. I found you, Kid.

But there wasn’t enough time to get down from the balcony and warn Nakamori. In one minute, the heist would begin.

Soon enough, Shinichi heard Nakamori’s countdown. He mentally joined in, and as they both hit zero, the room turned pitch black.

Ah, his classic blackout.

The room erupted into a frenzy as taskforce officers tried to stop Kid, while the thief himself easily got the jewel and began running. Calculating where he would go next, Shinichi ran off the balcony and into the halls. He had obtained a map of the building earlier and knew where Kid was most likely to go.

The rooftop.

He was right.

The thief stood on the rooftop, holding the jewel up to the moon. As Shinichi stopped behind him and caught his breath, Kid turned around and grinned. “Tantei-kun,” he greeted.

“Kid,” Shinichi shot back. “Hand over the jewel, now.”

“Alright, then,” Kid agreed. “It’s not the jewel I was looking for, after all.”

But, before Kid could hand over the jewel, a gunshot sounded and Kid cried out in pain as a bullet was buried into his arm. Shinichi rushed over and tried to catch the thief before he could fall. However, Kid soon hit the ground and fell unconscious. Cursing and looking behind himself, Shinichi noticed the man dressed in black that he had seen earlier.

“Hand over the jewel, Kid!” the man bellowed. His hand seemed to tighten on the gun, as if he was about to shoot again.

Shinichi picked Kid up in his arms, grunting a bit with the effort, and began running towards the rooftop’s other exit.

Shinichi soon got lost in the winding halls. Fortunately, the building was huge, so the man in black wouldn’t be able to find them easily, but unfortunately, it meant that Shinichi had no way of finding out where he was without stopping and giving Nakamori or someone a phone call. Also unfortunately, this meant that the taskforce’s chance of running into the man in black was low as well.

Fuck Shinichi’s life.

Finally, Shinichi reached a storage closet. He vaguely remembered the map of the building and knew that one of the storage closets - hopefully this one - had secret stairs that would lead to the building’s rear exit. Setting Kid down to lean against the wall and then opening the storage closet, he picked up Kid again before the thief could crumble to the floor and entered, kicking the door closed behind himself. Setting Kid on the floor, he locked the door and turned on the lights.

Making his way over to the wall, Shinichi sighed in relief as he felt the entrance to the secret stairwell. Good. If I can just get Kid down the stairs…

Then he heard a groan behind him. Turning around, Shinichi saw Kid slowly get up. There was a peculiar scent in the air, but Shinichi ignored it as he approached the thief. “Are you okay?”

“Fine,” Kid muttered. “My arm’s in pain, but I’m fine.”

“Good,” Shinichi breathed out with relief. “I’m taking you down to the exit, then I’ll call Hakase to pick you up.”

“What about the taskforce?”

Shinichi sighed. “Throw a sleeping bomb at them. I hate having to break the law, but I don’t want you to get caught. Not like this, anyway,” he hastily added.

Kid smirked a bit, though it was clearly weak. “I see. You really care about me, huh, Tantei-kun.”

“Don’t press your luck,” Shinichi muttered. He got closer to Kid and caught a whiff of that scent again. This time, he froze. “What…?”

Kid froze as he seemed to notice the scent as well. “Well, uh…”

“What is going on?” Shinichi demanded. “I thought you were an alpha, but now you smell all… wrong!”

Kid managed a weak smile. “Uh. You guessed incorrectly.”

“Obviously I did, since you’re clearly an omega,” Shinichi muttered, then sighed. “You know what? This isn’t the main concern right now. Come on, let’s head on out.” He offered Kid his arm, and the thief stared at him in confusion for a few moments before he took it.

“Such a gentleman,” Kid teased lightly.

“Shut up,” Shinichi said. “I just don’t want you falling down the stairs and busting your head open.”

“Yowch,” Kid agreed. “Let’s avoid that happening, please.”

As Shinichi guided Kid down the stairs, the thief prepared his sleeping gas bombs and handed Shinichi a gas mask. Putting it on, the detective continued down the stairs. Kid quickly threw the bombs at the taskforce members stationed at the exit.

“Time to call Hakase,” Shinichi muttered, dialing a number.

Kid snatched the phone out of Shinichi’s hand before he could finish, then shook his head at him. “No, I’ll call my accomplice.” He took his own phone out and called someone. He conferred with them in a quiet voice before hanging up and nodding at Shinichi. “Thank you,” he said.

“You’re welcome,” Shinichi said awkwardly. “And, uh, next time, apply stronger scent blockers?”

Kid grinned. “You got it.” The omega paused before suddenly hugging Shinichi. His scent washed over the detective for a few seconds before the magician pulled away. Smiling almost shyly at Shinichi, the thief soon began to walk away.

All Shinichi could do now was stare after him.
