Chapter Text
As Wednesday grasped Enid’s slim frame for the first time, returning her initial desperate embrace, she was struck by several revelations.
Firstly, she realised how much taller Enid was. They had never been this close before so while she knew she was smaller than Enid it hadn't been apparent by how much - especially with the stacked heels and chunky trainers Wednesday normally wore. The height difference meant she naturally buried her head directly into Enid’s shoulder, ideal to hide the look on her face which she didn’t want to reveal to the wider group.
Secondly, Enid smelt surprisingly pleasant and comforting. Wednesday wasn’t sure if it was some popular teenage perfume, something to do with the wolfing out or Enid’s natural smell, but it was what Wednesday assumed normal people would call heavenly. It wasn’t the sort of smell she normally liked - a damp cellar or a freshly vacated coffin were both personal favourites - yet it instantly relaxed her and allowed her, with a single exhale, to let out the huge weight of stress which she wasn’t aware had been building so heavily inside her.
Lastly Wednesday just fitted into Enid. Their bodies did indeed physically match each other perfectly like two sides of a torn death warrant being taped back together - but it was more than that. Wednesday finally felt at home in this embrace, in a way she had never really experienced before.
The whole world melted away in those few seconds. Wednesday felt lighter than she had even done, and it wasn’t just from the relief of seeing Enid safe. It was something much more.
As she came back to her senses Wednesday didn’t want to let go but became aware of the crowd around them. It would be weird enough to her school colleagues that she was actually touching someone at Nevermore without inflicting some sort of pain on them so she certainly didn’t want to show her softer side so soon after realising she actually had one. She let go of Enid but the taller girl kept one arm around her shoulders. Enid leant into Wednesday and whispered into her ear “I love you Wednesday”.
This shocked Wednesday into a silence before she had even said anything. She hoped her subsequent facial expression as she stared back at Enid told her how she felt in return without needing to speak. Wednesday was sure there would be time to speak more later, in the privacy of their dorm room.
—-------------------
Enid did indeed see the look, and while Wednesday's response wasn’t all she had hoped for, it was enough to show Enid that there was a good chance the feelings may be reciprocated.
Enid leant against Wednesday as they walked gingerly back to the dorm - she was exhausted from the night's activities - but she also felt the need to shield and guide her little rain cloud just as much. That protective instinct which made her wolf out and spring into action to save Wednesday during that brutal fight with the Hyde had remained now she was back to her usual form.
Also Wednesday was clearly in shock - something that Enid could tell through the smaller girls' slightly changed facial expression and body language. It would have been imperceptible to most onlookers but Enid had spent enough time with Wednesday to know when her emotions cracked - a blink and a small muscle movement in her face was usually all the tells Wednesday had. It was clear this time Wednesday's emotions were shattered into pieces and Enid did not want them to break them any further.
By the time they got back to the dorm Wednesday had recovered a little of her stern nature which was disappointing but she still allowed Enid to open the door for her. Enid told her to go and get a shower and surprisingly Wednesday dutifully obeyed and disappeared into the bathroom. Enid took off her own blood stained clothes, wiped herself down and got into a fluffy dressing gown as Wednesday came out of the bathroom.
Enid thought that Wednesday had some colour in her cheeks now for the first time since they had first met and wondered if her room mate normally put extra makeup on to make her look so pale. She decided after the night they had experienced it wasn’t really the best topic of conversation so after a light embrace she told Wednesday to get into bed so she could shower too. Even though that hug was a fraction of the one in the woods its still felt electric to Enid, but she didn’t want to push things too fast and ruin the already shaky vibe between them
—--------------
Wednesday had been cleaning up as best she can in the shower - thankfully none of the cuts she had been inflicted with were too bad and she didn’t need any medical treatment for them. More pressing was that she was badly battered and bruised all over from her ordeal and it hurt to move to clean herself up. The warm water eventually penetrated through her normally tundra like flesh to help soothe her joints and reduce the pain.
The headache from the shovel blow to the head mercifully eased and she felt halfway back to normal as she pulled on her black silk night dress and black velvet gown. She had decided to revert back to her usual coldness towards Enid as she dressed as she didn’t want Enid to keep fussing over her. She wasn’t sure if Enid had meant what she said in the forest or if she had just been caught up in the moment. Wednesday didn’t want to look like a fool this soon - things had been going so well before the evening's events and she did not want to mess up their friendship. Wednesday wasn’t sure how to have a normal friendship so wanted to ease into it at a pace she felt comfortable with. Thinking about being “more than friends” with Enid was more like an alien concept her mind couldn’t even grasp at this stage. It did seem to match what she yearned for though, strange as it was.
This all changed in an instant as she walked out of the bathroom and Enid hugged her again. It wasn’t the same sort of embrace they had shared in the forest but it was still so good. Again Wednesday fitted perfectly into Enid and although it was only brief, Wednesday was home again.
As Enid disappeared into the bathroom she instructed Wednesday to get into bed.
Now this was a fairly innocuous request but it threw the normally stone cold logical brain of Wednesday into a frenzy. Wednesday assumed Enid meant her own bed on the darker side of the room but Wednesday wondered what would happen if she got into Enids bed? Would Enid be shocked then insist they were only friends before banishing Wednesday back to the dark side? Wednesday was sure that would ruin the friendship and make things weird but she wanted to be bold. If she went back to her own bed - perfectly cold, slightly damp and as hard as a mortuary slab - maybe her best chance of taking things further would be lost. But if she never tried, she would never find out.
Enid’s bed was normally a sight which made Wednesday feel slightly queasy with its riot of bright colours and bewildering array of cushions, pillows and oversized plushies which barely left any space to lie in. Tonight it looked comforting in a way it would have seemed impossible to Wednesday mere hours before. Maybe the bruises and grazes wouldn’t feel so bad being pressed against softer materials but it was more than that. Enid’s bed reflected her personality and Wednesday just wanted to be close to more of what Enid was. After dithering for a while like a malfunctioning robot on the sticky patch down the middle of the room where the tape had been peeled up she made her decision, hobbling into the coloured side and sinking into the softness of Enid’s bed. It was everything she had hoped for and more. Just like Enid’s first hug with her she sank into the comfort of it all and was so instantly relaxed - especially with the smell being identical to Enid - that she immediately started drifting off to sleep.
It would only be a short time before she found out if the decision she made was the right one.
—-------
Enid had taken longer in the shower than she would normally. Partly it was because it was tricky getting the dried blood off her skin but mainly she didn’t know how Wednesday would act towards her when she went back into the dorm room. Wednesday had reverted back to her usual cold self to an extent and while the brief hug had been fantastic the dynamic between them wasn’t the same as in the forest. Enid fretted about it and wasted a lot of time considering the possible outcomes but eventually cleared her head and managed to get changed and ready.
As Enid left the bathroom she automatically looked to the dark side of the dorm room and was alarmed to see no sign of Wednesday. Had she left already? Panic filled her briefly before she turned back to her own side of the room and saw Wednesday buried under Enid’s pink duvet, the thick bed covering pulled up to her chin so only her pale face and her black hair were visible. Her heart joyfully skipped a beat and she quickly walked up to her bed and knelt down beside the sleeping girl who, for the first time ever, looked very cute all tucked up in the pink folds - although she knew it would be dangerous to say that out loud to Wednesday.
Enid stroked Wednesday's cheek with her fingertips. She expected it to be cold but it was surprisingly warm to the touch. Wednesday opened her eyes to look at Enid and simply said “I hope you don’t mind.”
“Of course not my love” Enid replied automatically, not even realising she said the L word again - it was natural to her. She had said it so many times in her head when speaking with Wednesday, never daring to say it out loud. Now was the time to be bold and repeat what she said in the woods. Enid knew instantly it was right as a slight smile crept across the edge of Wednesdays lips. Without thinking Enid leant forwards to kiss Wednesday on the forehead.
As she got halfway Wednesday lifted her head up and intercepted Enid’s lips with her own. For the briefest of moments Enid’s mind went into blind panic but as fast as that feeling rose it went away as she sank into Wednesday's lips, kissing deeply and passionately. Enid held Wednesdays face in her hands, the smaller girl submitting to Enids tender touch.
Enid was in heaven, nothing else existed in that moment, her mind both blank and full at the same time. Everything she wanted since she first met Wednesday was right there in that kiss. She had wondered on and off for weeks what it would be like to kiss her. She had found it hard recently not to stare at Wednesdays deep red lips - the only colour on her whole body - and had been caught out in class a couple of times daydreaming what it would be like to feel them pressed up against her own. She had never kissed a girl before, only a couple of short make-outs with boys which weren’t bad but nothing she wanted to repeat. This was different. Very different. She didn’t want to stop kissing Wednesday, she was so afraid of that moment ending……
—-----------------------
Wednesday on the other hand had recently found it hard to process her feelings towards the taller blond. She had always repressed feelings, only showing rage and anger when situations got too much. Never love or affection, emotions she didn’t recognise and found hard to deal with.
Although she had feelings towards Enid which had grown so strong over the last few hours she wasn’t sure what they were and how she should respond to them. As she lay in Enid’s bed and started to drift off she was aware Enid had come out of the bathroom. As Enid knelt beside her and started stroking her face Wednesday managed to organise her brain in an instant. In a moment she knew what she wanted to do more than anything……
As Enid bent down and leant forward to kiss her forehead, Wednesday knew there was only one option open to her - she had to release her heart to Enid. She had never felt the same way about boys and always stayed guarded around them - at least she now knew why starting a relationship with a boy had always seemed so pointless. Girls it was - well actually just one pink fluffy blonde she-wolf.
So at that moment nothing could have stopped her moving her head so her own lips met Enid’s. At that first touch it was almost as if her brain short circuited - she even imagined she heard a slight spluttering fizz in her head. Whatever rewiring had taken place inside her was clearly for the better as it felt so damn right. Enid didn’t seem to want to stop kissing her and there was no way Wednesday was going to make any effort to change Enid’s mind about what they were doing. Wednesdays thoughts were wiped clean, her world only existing to taste Enid’s soft lips, to feel her gentle hands caressing her face, to love her from the very centre of her being.

After a few minutes they stopped and just stared into each other's eyes. No words were said, both knew there didn’t need to be, but neither of them could stop the huge grins creeping across their faces. Enid was smitten to see Wednesday break into that world changing smile - to get that from Wednesday was rare enough but this was another level of happiness displayed on her face.
She peeled back the duvet and climbed in beside Wednesday, who nuzzled into Enid's neck as she curled up in her warm embrace.
Wednesdays last thoughts as Enid kissed her on her head and pulled her in tight were of pure bliss as her eyes closed again, drifting into a deep sleep in her girlfriend's bed.
