The wind howled and the windows of their apartment creaked as the storm outside continued to rage. Normally, Sae found the weather of winter quite comforting. Between the quiet fall of snow and the automatic excuse to stay inside, Sae usually liked the winter, but this was unsettling.
The storm only seemed to strengthen as Sae prepared their dinners, warming up soups that Ryusei had purchased for them earlier in the day after being involuntarily volunteered to do the grocery run. He was a bit worried with how their balcony door whined against the wind, a thick layer of snow already resting against the glass.
Ryusei was in the other room, gathering all the blankets he could find and piling them up around the couch. Compared to Sae, Ryusei absolutely hated the winter. Constantly complaining about the snow and his fingers falling off from the cold, the only thing about winter that Ryusei tended to like was the fact that football season coincided with the dreariest months of the year. He was already bundled up and ready for a long, cold night of listening to the wind even though Sae had tried to set the heat to a temperature that would be comfortable for them both.
“Sae, are you almost done? I’m dying out here!” Ryusei whined, his voice pitching upwards as another strong gust of wind made the doors groan. Sae gave the windows a concerned glance, the dark gray of the evening sky not showing any sign of letting up.
Grabbing the two large mugs he had chosen as vessels for their soup, Sae shuffled into the living room and set them down on the coffee table. Ryusei was bundled up on the floor, the only thing popping out of the blankets being his eyes and his two antennas of hair. Sae couldn’t help but chuckle, which won him a death glare from his boyfriend, and he patted the top of his head before returning to the kitchen for the loaf of bread and warm tea he had left behind.
As he approached Ryusei again, his hands now sticking out of the blankets to grasp the mug of soup, the storm gusted once more, followed by a loud, dull thud, a spark of electricity, and the eventual silence that came with a loss of power.
Standing in the living room, Sae looked around the darkened room, glancing from the TV to the clock in the kitchen. Everything was dark, not a spark of electricity to be found, and the room automatically felt five degrees cooler.
“No, fucking way. That did not just happen,” Ryusei complained, the blanket slipping from his head as he looked up at Sae.
“It sounded like a power line fell outside. That isn’t getting fixed for a while.” Sae groaned, setting his tea and the bread down in front of Ryusei. He walked to their bedroom, donning a hoodie and some warm socks, knowing the light outfit he was currently wearing wouldn’t be good for long. He also gathered up the comforter from their bed and a couple of candles and a lighter from their nightstand before returning to the blanket cocoon that was his boyfriend.
Setting the candles on the table, he quickly lit them, bathing them both in a warm, orange glow. Ryusei said something about wishing they could have a house with a fireplace one day, and Sae nodded in agreement. That would be perfect for a night like this, when all they had for warmth were a couple of scented candles and each other.
Stepping amongst all of Ryusei’s blankets, Sae nudged him with his knee, getting him to make room for him in the pile of quilts and fleece. Ryusei begrudgingly obliged, if only to siphon off some of Sae’s warmth, and shuffled his blankets around so that Sae could cover his legs. Over their shoulders, Sae wrapped their comforter, locking them into the pile together. Ryusei sighed, hands still tightly clasping his mug of soup, and rested his head on Sae’s shoulder.
Sae grabbed their loaf of bread, tearing off a crusty chunk and dunking it into his own mug of soup before offering it to Ryusei by pressing it against his lips. Ryusei didn’t hesitate to swallow the whole piece down, sighing happily as the still warm soup coated his mouth and warmed his tummy. To make sure he didn’t miss any crumbs, he stuck his tongue from between his lips, licking at the tips of Sae’s fingers as he retreated.
“Watch it…” Sae warned, taking the next chunk of bread for himself, watching Ryusei from the corner of his eye as his boyfriend brought the mug of soup to his lips, practically chugging the food as if it were a beverage until the mug was half empty.
“Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I did pick my favorite winter meal after all.” Ryusei nodded, opening his mouth to accept another chunk of bread as Sae fed it to him. “Your fingers are just giving me an early taste of desert.”
Rolling his eyes, Sae traded his soup for his tea, taking a deep sip before offering it to Ryusei. Ryusei never had an issue with sharing food or drinks with Sae, seeming almost enthusiastic to do so as Sae pressed the warm glass to his lips.
“Hey, I’m just trying to think of ways to keep us warm tonight, Sae. You should thank me for being so creative.”
“I wouldn’t call your one track mind creative ,” Sae stated, elbowing Ryusei once before turning back to finish his soup. Ryusei laughed, always enjoying Sae’s reactions to his teasing, before finishing off his own soup, placing the empty mug back on the table so his hands could retreat back to the warmth of their blanket nest.
It wasn’t long until he felt Ryusei’s fingers tugging at the edges of his shirt, trying to find the empty space between his hoodie and sweats.Ryusei was a master, however, and it was only a few seconds more before Ryusei’s cold fingers were tracing the lines of his stomach, greedily warming themselves while Sae chewed on his bread.
“Your hands are freezing,” Sae stated nonchalantly, his voice muffled from the bread in his mouth. He didn’t stop Ryusei, however, because any verbal protestations would fall on deaf ears. He didn’t really mind, anyway.
“I’m trying to warm ‘em up.” There was a smirk in Ryusei’s voice, and he rubbed his face against the fabric on Sae’s shoulder, warming his chilled nose and scooting himself even closer to his boyfriend.
Sae looked down at him, Ryusei’s big body looking incredibly tiny and pathetic in the mess of fabric that surrounded them. He clung on to him like a leech, his hands slowly slipping further up his shirt, prompting Sae to finally set down his mug to grab his wrists, dragging those hands back down into a safer zone.He felt Ryusei’s body sag in disappointment, but he kept his hands on the warmest parts of Sae’s stomach, obedient once told no.
Ryusei was never placated for long, however, and after it was clear that Sae had finished his dinner, he pulled all of the pillows off of the couch to provide a comfortable bed on the floor, before pushing Sae down. Sae allowed himself to be pushed, accepting Ryusei practically laying on top of him as he arranged the blankets around them, tucking them in securely in the darkness of their living room. Ryusei slung a leg over Sae’s hips before kissing his cheek, pinning him down and keeping him there as his own personal space heater.
Sae closed his eyes as he felt Ryusei’s fingers tickle at the sides of his torso again. He placed his hand over Ryusei’s wandering touches, holding him still and not allowing him to go any further. Ryusei whined, disappointed at Sae’s rejection. Sae placated him with a hand in his hair, soft and loose for once without the hint of hair gel. The touch told him he was allowed to continue with his kisses, but nothing more.
It was already freezing in their apartment, and only getting colder. Sae was not opposed to his boyfriend’s touches on a good day, but was not particularly fond of the idea of losing any layers of clothing that evening.
He should have known better than to encourage Ryusei to continue, however, even if it was innocent little kisses.
It was going to be a long night.
