“I see you don’t have any new clothes for Yule,” Trevor said, being his usual self.
“And?” Hilda asked. “What of it?”
“You’re lucky you live in the city now instead of the countryside,” Trevor said, spinning his yarn.
“And why is that?”
“Because the Yule cat will eat you for not having any new clothes for Yule,” Trevor said.
Hilda frowned, then said, “That’s a lie.”
“It’s not a lie. I thought you, of all people, would be interested,” Trevor said, wrinkling his nose at her.
David frowned as well. “I thought it was not getting any new clothes for Yule that got you.”
“That’s what I said,” Trevor rolled his eyes.
“No, you’re implying the tale says not getting any new clothes before Yule to celebrate Yule will result in your getting eaten by the Yule cat, while David is referring to not getting any new clothes as a gift for Yule,” Frida sighed.
“The Yule cat doesn’t eat people!” Hilda protested.
“Yes, he does. If you don’t get anew clothes.”
“No. He gives him new clothes made from his black fur,” Hilda said. “Because children shouldn’t be cold.” They stared at her, and then she said, “What?”
“How would you know that?” Trevor said
“Because I’ve met the Yule cat,” Hilda said.
“Why does that not surprise me,” Frida rolled her eyes.
“But surely your mom got you new clothes for Yule, right?”
“One year, they arrived late, and I was out in the cold, and my mitts didn’t fit, so he gave me a pair of mitts made from his black fur until then,” Hilda said.
“You’re lying,” Trevor said.
“I’m not lying.”
“Yes, you are!”
“You do realize, Trevor; we’re more likely to believe Hilda when it comes to this kind of thing over you?”
Trevor stormed away, glaring back at her.
