a christmas surprise

Summary:

Chan, rather reluctantly, turns his attention away from his boyfriend to load up the website for Sydney Airport. Jisung shuffles about on the screen as Chan types in Seoul, and he blinks awake again, mumbling a small ‘I should get up’ as Chan looks at ticket prices.

“Yes you should, baby. Don’t you have a lecture soon?” Chan asks, eyes flicking away from his laptop screen to stare at Jisung’s bundled up form on his phone screen for a second.
--
Or, Chan and Jisung are in a long distance relationship. When Jisung can't get tickets to go home, Chan decides to go to him.

Work Text:

Chan checks his phone continuously throughout his first lecture. It’s only been fifteen minutes since it started, but he’s still eagerly checking the time. He knows Jisung won’t wake up for another two hours, maybe three if he went to bed later last night, but there’s always the small chance he wakes up earlier, and Chan doesn’t wanna miss it if it happens.

“You know, you say me and Seungmin are bad, but you are absolutely terrible.” Felix whispers to him, lips quirked up in a smirk and Chan turns to glare at him.

“Mind your business.” Chan whispers back and Felix muffles a laugh into his hand, before focusing back on the lecture. Chan locks his phone, placing it down screen-up, before turning his attention back to the lecture too.

--

It’s two hours and twenty minutes later when Jisung finally wakes up, shooting Chan a good morning text before replying to the paragraph Chan had sent him upon waking up this morning. It’s a simple heart response but it makes Chan’s heart race, a dopey grin settling on his lips.

“You’re terrible.” Felix whispers to him and Chan ignores him in favour of texting Jisung.

Chan🐺: Hey baby, how are you feeling?

Sung💞💕: arent u in a lecture?

Chan covers his laugh with his hand. Trust Jisung to know his schedule well enough to call him out.

Chan🐺: Yeah, but my boyfriend is more important🤷♂️😉. Besides its nearly over.

Sung💞💕: ur cute but ur not getting out of this. finish ur lecture first and then ill call you.

Chan huffs, rolling his eyes, but the smile sitting on his lips negates all of the playful sadness.

Chan🐺: Fine, but only because I miss hearing your cute voice.

Sung💞💕: nghaugjnahu u cant just say stuff like that when ive only just woken up

Chan🐺: Sorry, baby, but it’s true!

Sung💞💕: whatever, just go finish ur lecture.

Chan🐺: Fine, fine, talk later, baby. 💞

Sung💞💕: 😘

Chan locks his phone again, placing it down before trying to focus back on his lecture, but really, his brain is all caught up in thoughts of Jisung. They haven’t had many phone calls or facetime calls recently due to how hectic Chan’s schedule had become, so he’ll take any opportunity he can to hear Jisung’s voice.

--

Thirty minutes later, Chan is rushing to pack up his things. The lecture had overrun and now he just wants to get out and call Jisung and here his boyfriend’s beautiful voice.

“Are you still okay to help me with the assignment for this class tomorrow?” Felix asks, deep voice cutting through Chan’s thoughts, and Chan nods.

“Yeah. Sorry, just, wanna go so I can talk to Jisung.” Chan says, smiling meekly. Felix laughs, brushing it off.

“Go ahead, don’t let me stop you from getting to lover boy. Besides, I am meant to be meeting Seungmin now so…” Felix trails off, a light hint of pink shading his cheeks, and Chan laughs. The irony.

“See you Lix. Say hi to Seungmin for me.” Chan says over his shoulder as he rushes out the room and down the steps of the building that the lecture hall was in. Once he’s outside and away from the rush of noise that the other students make, Chan pulls his phone out. Jisung had messaged him four times and Chan winces at that. He quickly reads through the messages.

Sung💞💕: if ur looking at ur phone rn, stop it. u only have 5 mins to go!

Chan can’t stop the giggle that leaves his lips after reading that message, but he quickly calms down and focuses back on the three remaining messages.

Sung💞💕: aye ur done now right?

Sung💞💕: channie?

Sung💞💕: okay just call me when u can…

The last message makes Chan feel horrible and he quickly hits the call button on Jisung’s number, placing the phone against his ear as he walks back to his accommodation. Jisung answers not long after and Chan smiles at his greeting.

“Chan! I was starting to worry you’d forgotten about me…” Chan can hear Jisung’s pout through the phone and it makes Chan laugh, the sound laced in lovesickness and adoration.

“Sorry baby, but I’d never forget about you. Class just overran today. I’m sorry.” Chan says, unintentionally mirroring Jisung’s pout. He quickens his steps, eager to get back to his flat so he could maybe facetime Jisung instead. He’s missed seeing his baby’s pretty face.

“That’s okay. Channie. I’m glad it was nothing serious.” Jisung says and Chan can still hear sleepiness laced in Jisung’s voice.

“When I get back to my flat, do you wanna face time?” Chan asks and he can practically sense the smile that lights up Jisung’s face as he responds.

“Of course! I miss seeing your face.” Jisung says, pout audible through his words once more, and Chan laughs at how adorable his boyfriend is.

“Me too, baby.” Chan says and the call goes silent then. It happens quite often, and Chan knows it’s just Jisung’s brain catching up to him, the younger still not quite used to the pet name that Chan ever so lavishly throws at him.

It’s as Chan is entering the passcode to his building that Jisung finally speaks again, and the words that he whispers make Chan tense up, dropping his key card to the floor.

“I wish we could spend Christmas together.”

“Baby, I wish we could too, but you’ll be spending the time with your family, right?” Chan asks, bending down to snatch up his key card before entering the passcode again, tugging the door open this time.

“No…” The word is whispered, and Chan stops where he stands, halfway up the stairs to his floor.

“What do you mean no?” Chan says, continuing up the stairs again. “I thought you had everything planned out?” He swipes his card over the lock on his door, pushing the door open as he waits for Jisung to respond.

“Are you home?” Jisung asks and Chan confirms he is, pulling his phone away from the screen to accept the facetime call. Jisung’s face fills the screen, a small pout on his lips, and Chan hates the way his boyfriend looks right now, sadness laced throughout his every feature.

“What’s wrong baby?” Chan asks, settling his phone down on his desk before quickly discarding his bag, jacket and shoes. He quickly sits down in his desk chair, Jisung’s face still pouting at him on his phone screen and Jisung sighs upon seeing Chan again, a small smile creeping its way onto his face before he can stop it.

“I couldn’t get tickets to go home…” Jisung says, his face crinkling up with unshed tears before he buries his face into his bedsheets. Chan feels sadness burn up in his veins as the barely audible sounds of Jisung crying flit through his phone’s speaker.

“Oh baby, I’m sorry.” Chan says, eyes still fixed on Jisung’s faceless form. Jisung lifts his head up then, eyes glassy and cheeks damp, and Chan just wants to hold Jisung and wipe away his tears and kiss him until all his worries are gone.

“Don’t be sorry. It’s my fault.” Jisung says, voice quiet and Chan frowns. Jisung huffs, adjusting so he’s lying down, phone hanging above him, and Chan smiles, trying to make the younger feel better, even if he knows his chances of succeeding are slim. It’s hard to get Jisung out of an upset slump, Chan has learnt that the hard way. He lifts up his laptop screen, quickly turning it on before turning back to look at Jisung. The younger is staring at him and flushes, a squeak leaving his lips when Chan catches him. Jisung pulls the covers up to hide his face and Chan laughs, Jisung peeking his head out to stare at him, before pulling the covers down fully, his gummy smile visible.

“You’re adorable baby.” Chan says and Jisung flushes again but doesn’t hide the way his smile brightens even more. As Chan’s laptop flickers to life, the call goes quiet again, but Chan doesn’t mind. He’s glad him and Jisung can have quiet moments like this, and that they don’t feel the need to constantly be talking and filling up the space.

When Chan looks at the screen again, Jisung has settled his phone against his wall, eyes drooping closed as sleep threatens to overtake him again, and Chan smiles at the sight. Jisung blinks away drearily not even a few seconds later and he pouts when he finds Chan staring at him.

“Creep.” He mumbles, the sound muffled by his bedsheets and Chan just laughs, loading up Chrome on his laptop.

“Mhm, sure thing baby.” He says and Jisung just huffs, the apples of his cheeks tinging red again, before snuggling back into his bedsheets. Chan knows it’s way too late in the morning over in South Korea for Jisung to even be attempting to sleep again, but the younger looks so adorable that Chan can’t find it within himself to chastise him for falling asleep again.

“Yeah, at twelve. Don wan go.” Jisung says, his words muffled as he presses his duvet covered hands into his cheeks. Chan smiles, looking at Jisung once more before focusing back on his laptop screen. Jisung huffs, standing up to get ready, dragging his phone along with him, and Chan keeps sparing brief glances as Jisung moves, the younger slowly becoming more and more awake as he goes.

Chan finishes putting the final details of his card information in so he can pay for the ticket when Jisung asks him what he’s doing.

“Hmm? Oh, just buying something.” Chan asks, humming as he waits for the confirmation of his purchase to go through.

“What something?” Jisung whines and Chan laughs at the sound. His boyfriend could be so childish sometimes.

“It’s a gift for Felix, don’t worry about it.” Chan says and the brief flicker of jealousy in Jisung’s eyes makes Chan concerned. He knows that Jisung used to be seriously jealous of Felix before, but he really thought Jisung had gotten over it by now. He decides to ignore it for the time being, trusting his boyfriend to tell him when he’s ready.

“Okay. Well, I still have some time before my lecture. Wanna play Mario Kart?” Jisung asks, sitting at his own desk now, and Chan nods, shuffling around through his top drawer for his switch before pulling it out with a tiny triumphant ‘aha!’. (He smiles at the mismatching joy-cons. Jisung had insisted they traded their right ones as a way to stay connected to each other and Chan was too whipped to say no, so now his switch has one blue joy-con and one white). The sound of Chan’s ‘victory’ makes Jisung giggle, eyes crinkling shut and Chan stares at him, a soft smile on his lips. Jisung was so beautiful and soon he’d get to see him in person.

Chan couldn’t wait.

When Felix comes over the next day to get help on his assignment, Chan doesn’t say anything, sliding his laptop over to the younger, face buried in the collar of hoodie.

“Uh, tell me this isn’t what I think it is.” Felix says, his deep voice ringing through Chan’s ears.

“It is…” Chan trails off, embarrassment burning up his cheeks.

“Chan!”

“I know, okay? But, but he couldn’t get a ticket home and I can get a ticket to him so, I just did it, okay? No one deserves to spend Christmas alone. Surely you can understand that, Felix.” Chan says, finally un-recoiling from his hoodie and looking at Felix with a frustrated huff and a pout on his lips.

“Hmm, that’s true, but still. What if you two end up hating each other? Your ticket is a return but not till…” Felix trails off, looking at the laptop screen again, a sharp intake of breath sounding through the room when he looks at the date splayed there. “January 5th?! Chan, what the fuck?” Felix says, voice rising in tone and Chan flushes then, burying his face in his hoodie-clad hands.

“I know.” Chan mumbles into his sleeve and Felix huffs, pushing Chan’s laptop back to him. Chan untucks himself to take it back, closing his emails and opening up his assignment.

“When do you leave?” Felix asks, distractedly pulling out his own laptop and Chan flushes again then.

“Tomorrow.” He whispers and Felix turns to glare at him then.

“You, Bang Chan, are terrible. And whipped.”

“I know…”

“Good. Now help me with my assignment.” Felix says, settling back on Chan’s bed, his laptop in his lap, and Chan huffs.

Tomorrow can’t come quicker.

The next morning finds Chan in Sydney Airport, suitcase for the next two weeks trailing behind him as he waits for his plane to be called. His phone reads 5.43am and he’s so close to falling asleep. He doesn’t even have anyone to text, his friends all living in his time zone or in a time zone even further behind. Chan yawns just as his plane is called and he tiredly makes his way over to the correct gate, glad the process goes quickly, allowing him to board the plane and sleep once they lift off.

It takes a while but eventually the plane lifts off and Chan settles into a deep sleep. He hadn’t slept all night, insomnia and fears of Jisung’s reaction plaguing his mind, but he finds himself unable to fight it now, his eyes slipping close.

--

When Chan wakes up, it’s near the end of the plane journey. He looks at the little map screen and sees that the plane is expected to land within the next thirty minutes. Chan sighs. He’s sure he’s got a million missed texts and calls from Jisung right now, but the younger is just gonna have to wait till Chan knocks on his door for a response.

Chan hates it. But the surprise will, hopefully, pay off.

Hopefully.

Jisung sighs, tears lightly brimming his eyelashes as he checks over his phone once more. He’s right at the back of his busy lecture hall, so no one will see his tears apart from Changbin, the boy he’d befriended during his first year who sticks to Jisung side when his boyfriend isn’t around. They’re in their last lecture of the semester but Jisung can’t focus, not when Chan hasn’t even read his messages. His fidgeting and upset state must’ve been noticed by Changbin because the older boy leans closer and whispers to Jisung.

“What’s wrong?” Jisung jumps, turning to stare at the elder, and Changbin’s eyes widen upon seeing the tears lining Jisung’s eyes.

“Chan hasn’t read my messages today.” Jisung whispers back and Changbin pouts then.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, Ji.” Changbin says and Jisung just sniffles, wiping his tears before locking his phone and placing it screen down.

“It’s fine. Let’s just focus on the lecture, it’s almost done.” Jisung says, trying to keep his voice stable and Changbin huffs before sitting back normally. Jisung appreciates that Changbin has dropped the conversation, before his mind quickly switches to thinking about Chan and why he wasn’t reading his texts.

Where you are you Channie?

*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*

When Jisung gets back to his flat, he falls onto his bed with a sigh that quickly morphs into a sob. Chan hadn’t read his messages all day and Jisung was so worried. Holding his emotions in all throughout his lecture had made him feel weak and sleepy and, after wishing Changbin goodbye and a good holidays (he was going to Minho’s for the holiday and he was leaving that very day), Jisung had made his way back to his flat.

He’s just about to stand up and change his clothes when a knock on his door has Jisung sighing. He sits up, ruffles a hand through his hair before trudging to the door, opening it without looking through the peep hole first.

On the other side of the door stands Jisung’s boyfriend and he smiles at him before realising.

“Chan?! What are you doing here?” Jisung says, voice high-pitched and squeaky from unshed tears. Chan smiles at him, eyes crinkling up, and Jisung takes in the sight. Of course he knows Chan is attractive but seeing his boyfriend over phone screens is nothing compared to the sight of his boyfriend standing before him.

“Merry Christmas baby. I thought I’d come see you. When you told me you couldn’t get tickets home, I, I realised I couldn’t leave you here all alone.” Chan says, biting his bottom lip in nervousness and Jisung giggles, throwing his arms around Chan, smiling when the older boy hugs him back.

“Thank you. It means a lot.” Jisung whispers, and Chan shivers at that but just mutters his response into Jisung’s hair. “Come on in.” Jisung says after they separate, moving aside to allow Chan to enter his room.

“Feels weird seeing this room in real life.” Chan says, moreso to himself, and Jisung giggles before something comes to his mind.

“How long are you here for?” Jisung asks and Chan looks at him then, sliding down the handle of his suitcase before making his way over to sit beside Jisung on his bed.

“Two weeks. My return date is January 5th.” Chan says, smiling sweetly at Jisung and Jisung feels complete love and adoration stir in his gut.

“Kiss me.” Jisung whispers, the words barely being caught by Chan, but Chan leans in anyway, kissing Jisung gently. Jisung presses into the kiss more, intensifying it and before he can realise it, he’s on his back, Chan hovering above him. Eventually Jisung pulls away, needing to breath, but Chan doesn’t let up, kissing all over Jisung’s face and neck. Jisung practically purrs at the feeling. Chan eventually stops, hovering over Jisung again before leaning down and kissing him once more. The kiss lasts for a while until Jisung pulls away again. He bites his bottom lip, not wanting the words in his brain to slip out, but he finds that actually, he wants to say them, so he realises his lip from his teeth.

“I love you, Chan.” Jisung whispers and Chan flushes at that, the apples of his cheeks turning a pretty shade of red. They haven’t said those words to each other yet, only having been together for seven months, but Jisung has never felt a better time to say it than right now. He’s pulled from his thoughts when Chan leans down to kiss Jisung again, a sweet simple kiss this time.

“I love you too, Jisung.” Chan whispers back and Jisung feels his heart rush. How is he going to survive two weeks with Chan when the older boy makes him feel like this?! He tucks that away, deciding to let Jisung-later-on deal with that. Instead he reaches up, lacing his hands around Chan’s neck and tugs the older boy closer, whispering in his ear.

“Make me feel good.”
