Work Text:
Akutagawa wasn't far from the Armed Detective Agency, Atsushi's workplace, Some business had brought him into the area and since he was free, why not stop by.
He had been there previously on errands… and to see Atsushi.
They haven't seen each other this week and if you were to ask Higuchi, she would say that Akutagawa has been much more moody than usual. She could tell by the more displeased-than-usual grunts he lets out while working. Considering for him the average was still enough grunts to think any other person would be having a bad day.
Akutagawa had been terribly bored when Higuchi had shown him this low-level mission. She probably would have assigned it to a lower-ranking recruit if Akutagawa hadn't been sitting in a corner looking sombre and depressed all day. It was too early to deal with all this gloom.
It was probably a part of her plan to send him to an area awfully close to the agency.
Either way, his feet had already started walking down the road in the direction of the agency. He only stopped when he passed a convenience store. A small nook in the corner of the block, with posters and advertisements plastered on the sliding glass doors, of soft drinks, instant noodles and cheap booze.
The sliding doors opened and two small children holding a plastic bag in between them walked out. They giggled and hopped down the road, swinging their bag, filled with colourful packages and wrappers.
Should he get something for Atsushi? His mind filled in. He crossed the road and stepped into the store without further thought. Once he was inside he got a bit overwhelmed.
What would Atsushi even like?
He hasn't asked yet about the weretiger's favourite drinks! Or chips, or candy! Isn't that something he should know by now? As his boyfriend nonetheless!
What did he know about his partner?
Sure he knew what Atsushi's blind spots were in a fight, or how he moves to take down his opponents and how long he can carry Akutagawa after missions if needed. How his arms felt around him, how his hand was soft to hold, how his heartbeat was soothing to hear under his ear…
But those don't count! He knew Atsushi well as a combat partner, but not as well as a romantic one.
Which was not acceptable. Atsushi deemed Akutagawa worth liking and calling his own. So Akutagawa had to be the best. And only the best for Atsushi. He has to start putting more effort into his boyfriend role, starting with snacks.
He spent a good 10 min looking through the soft drink on the cooled shelves.
Looking through the variety of flavoured teas; green, peach, hibiscus, mango, apple, pineapple and so many more. Too many! Which one would Atsushi like best?
He had no choice. Bringing up his hand, he chose a few at random and dumped them in his basket. The next aisle proved the same problem, with too much to choose from Akutagawa implored the previous strategy.
By the end of his scavenging, his basket was filled with many different varieties of goods. This way Atsushi is bound to find something he likes. A foolproof plan.
He went to check out. His purchases tested the plastic bag's limit as it swayed while he walked. He slightly lifted the hand holding the food, trying to avoid accidentally kicking the big bag hanging by his legs.
The walk took only a few minutes and now he stood in front of the building entrance to the ADA.
The sun shone brightly into his eyes as he looked up to try to find the windows connected to the offices.
Akutagawa was maybe stalling a tiny bit. He hasn't thought this through and he didn't even know if Atsushi was inside the building at the moment. His work took him all over the city and today could be one of those days.
The mafioso looked down towards the entrance again, thinking of his options. The sun was strong and it hurt his eyes to be surrounded by this much bright light.
It was simple. He'll walk in and deliver the snacks. And if Atsushi is not there, he'll leave them by his desk and be on his way. Making sure to send a warning glare to Atsushi's sweet-toothed detective friend if he's there. He doesn't want Atsushi to come back to an empty bag.
Determined once again, he took a step forward towards the door before it opened and a head filled with bright white hair stuck out.
"Akutagawa!"
It made the mafioso stop, the man he had been thinking about all day was now in front of him. He was caught, perhaps, a bit off guard.
"Atsushi!" He stumbled.
"Hi." He got an answer back. Atsushi stepped out from behind the door and stopped in front of Akutagawa, looking up at him with a little smile.
The mafioso took a moment to gather his thoughts, the weretiger pulled a surprise attack on him and he should have been better prepared. One never knows what the weretiger can do behind the shining, enchanting, bright smile he always saw on his face when they were together.
"Atsushi." He said again. His eyes focused on the man in front of him.
"Yes?" A tilt of Atsushi's head accompanied the words.
"I got you snacks. But I didn't know which ones you like the most… so I got a few of each."
Akutagawa presented the bag in front of him to Atsushi. This will surely give him a few boyfriend points. Brows furrowed in determination.
"All of these are for me?!" He exclaimed, this was one full bag. This many snacks could last Atsushi for two weeks! maybe even four if he wanted.
Akutagawa answered with a nod. He looked proud of himself for exceeding Atsushi's expectations. It was a brilliant idea to get this many.
Atsushi, not knowing what else to do, accepted the bag and looped it on his elbow. He was a tad bit stunned at receiving so much out of nowhere.
"Tell me which ones you like best." His mission was done, the snacks were delivered and they will make his boyfriend happy when he eats them, so he turned to start leaving.
Atsushi had snapped back from whatever was going on in his head to grab onto the mafioso.
"Wait!"
Akutagawa turned back to face him. They stood there and stared at each other for a moment before Atsushi seemed to have gotten back to himself. He put on one of those smiles that Akutagawa could never predict and always left him stumbling.
A timid smile was on the weretigers lips.
"I haven't thanked you yet." Atsushi gazed into Akutagawa's eyes, a slight blush had tinted his cheeks.
The mafioso didn't think he needed to be thanked. It was his 'boyfriend' duty after all. Making Atsushi happy was the only 'thanks' he needed from this.
But Atsushi still opened his mouth and spoke.
"Thank you, darling."
He was wrong.
It took Akutagawa several moments to fully process what the weretiger had called him and when he did he opened his mouth to say something but what came out instead could be categorized as a squeak.
His whole face got red.
The weretiger had gotten strong. One word and he could bring this feared mafia member to a malfunctioning stop.
Atsushi had called him ' darling'. The thought of it made Akutagawa's heart quicken. How embarrassing to be reduced to such a state.
Laughter bloomed from Atsushi at Akutagawa's reaction.
Perhaps it wasn't too terrible if it made the weretiger laugh like that, joyous and full of fondness.
Akutagawa swallowed and somehow got words out of his throat.
"Y-you're welcome. Goodbye, A-Atsushi. I'll see you l-later.". He was still just a blushing mess at the weretiger's mercy.
An 'Mhm' made it out of Atsushi as he cupped Akutagawa's face and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. He pulled away, but not much, their noses were touching.
"I'll see you soon." He said, looking into his partner's eyes.
Akutagawa, still red in the face, only nodded. He slowly pulled away from Atsushi and turned away. He sprinted down the road with a hand over his mouth, not wanting others to see the smile on his lips. He looked positively lovesick.
His goal in coming here was to be a good boyfriend and make Atsushi happy.
Mission successful.
