Finney could feel his heart drop into his stomach as he stared into his reflection in the mirror. Something about his outfit made him look nothing like himself, and it caused a small flame of worry to sprout in the back of his mind. He ONLY dressed up to impress Robin, but he knew how Robin went on and on about how he loved Finn for FINN. So for him to look so different made him worry Robin wouldn’t like it. He tried moving his hair a couple of different ways before just ruffling it around to fix it back to normal then he patted down his clothes.
Just as he was about to sigh out another breath of frustration, Gwen’s voice boomed from downstairs, causing Finney to almost jump out of his skin. He glanced at himself one last time before taking a deep breath, opening the door, and beginning his descent down the steps.
“What took you so long-” Gwen started but stopped when she saw Finney stop at the bottom of the steps. “Ohhh. You dolled up for your boyfriend,” Gwen teased, leaning on the wall with a shit-eating grin plastered on her face. “Is that sugar cookie: Demeter I smell? Robin’s favorite scent?”
Finney slowly turned red and fixed the cuffs of his sleeves on his blue sweater, looking at everything but Gwen. “ Actually , it’s chocolate chip. Sugar cookies are Robin’s second favorite scent.” Gwen smiled with amusement and shrugged, moving off the wall to grab a bag from beside her feet and holding it out to Finn. She watched him take it before speaking again.
“I was right with the company, though, yes? I normally don’t miss when it comes to perfume companies.” Finn laughed softly and went to answer before hearing a knock at the door. His face instantly became a scarlet shade as he bore a hole into the door. Gwen’s grin grew wider as she approached the door slowly. Finn quickly recovered and started fixing his hair in a nearby mirror before shoving Gwen aside, grabbing the door handle with such force that in any other circumstance, he’d be worried it’d rip off the door.
“Hey, Robin!” Finney squeaked out, cringing slightly at how excited he sounded. He couldn’t help it. If you had the Robin Arellano as your boyfriend, wouldn’t you want him to know you were excited and grateful to have him by your side? Finney sure was. “Merry Christmas!”
Robin could feel his heart melt upon seeing him. His beautiful boyfriend, all dressed up nicely, his hair a bit more messy than usual from constant tampering, and the strong smell of his favorite scent filling his nose. Robin HAD to comment on it.
“Are those cookies I smell? Chocolate chip, to be exact?” Robin started, smiling up at his boyfriend, a glint of mischief evident in his eyes. “You baked me cookies, Cariño? How thoughtful of you~.”
Finn’s face grew red again, and the blush traveled down his neck when he heard Gwen burst into laughter. He shot her a glare before he stared at his feet, kicking at imaginary rocks. He mumbled under his breath before looking off to the side. Robin smirked and leaned closer on his tippy toes.
“Come again? I didn’t hear you.” Finney glared down at him before blushing more. He then grabbed his bag and grumbled softly, where only Robin could hear.
“You keep teasing me, and you’ll get coal for Christmas,” Finn stated, clearly joking, but the mere thought of missing out on a gift made Robin gasp dramatically, forcing Finney to laugh loudly. Robin clutched his chest like he had a pearl necklace.
“How could you SAY that?! I can’t live without your gifts!” Robin yelled, flailing his arms around like a psycho. The sight had Finney bursting into giggles as he slung the bag over his shoulder, waved Gwen goodbye, and walked off of his porch with Robin. “Why are we hanging out with Baseball Head again? I get he’s having a fiesta or whatever, but we’re not exactly part of the popular group he hangs out with-.”
Finney smiled softly at Robin and took his hand in his own, intertwining their fingers. Robin looked at him and returned the smile. Immediately, his worries and thoughts disappeared, leaving only the image of his lover behind. Robin’s mind cleared, and all he could focus on was his hand in Finney’s until the resonance of his voice broke his thought process.
“Here we are! Bruce’s house!” Finney announced, slowly tilting his head to emphasize how big the house was. It was probably the most extensive house either of them had ever seen, considering the town they occupied. Robin mumbled a curse and went to crack a joke but got interrupted when Finn’s elbow came in contact with his side. He was about to ask, but the reasoning opened the door, revealing Bruce’s bright smile.
“There you guys are! I figured you’d be early! Come in!” Bruce stepped aside to let the couple walk in. A couple of guests were already occupying the area, but none were very popular or a big deal. Some tasty and sugar snacks filled the tables on the left side of the room, and the other side was a tiny speaker that was WAY too loud, considering everyone wasn’t talking over it yet. “Make yourself at home! More guests should be on the way-. Griffin and Billy should be playing a game upstairs.”
Robin nodded as Bruce walked off to be sure the other guests were okay. Finney made his way to the other room, finding the beautiful tree designated in the corner. He carefully opened his bag to pull out about four gifts and placed them under the tree, leaving one in the bag. Then, Finney turned to see Robin walking in with snacks.
“You DID bring your presents for them, right?” Finn interrogated, eyeing Robin as he continued to snack on the cookie that crumbled in his hands.
“Tómalo con calma, mamá is bringing them around 2 for me. I got too big of gifts for me to carry here. She insisted on wrapping them for me anyway.” Robin shrugged as he finished his explanation and dug into another cookie. Finn sighed and stood up straight.
“Alright then, time to find our weirdos.”
~
Of course, that was easier said than done, but Griffin and Billy undoubtedly
weren’t
upstairs. Some gross seniors were in the middle of a makeout session and were the farthest from happy when poor Finney opened the door to catch them in the act. After multiple apologies
and Robin shitting on multiple mothers
, they eventually found their friends in Bruce’s room. They were messing around with his baseball bat and other trophies for his numerous accomplishments.
Griffin quickly looked at the door as it swung open, exposing an exceptionally bitter Robin with a nervous Finn behind him. Griffin relaxed when he realized it wasn’t Bruce catching them in the act. Billy set down the baseball and waved happily to his friends.
“Hey, you two! We’ve been waiting for you-”
“Do NOT give me that shit- We’ve been searching the entire upstairs for you two, only to find you perras was in Bruce’s room?! You know how many putas desagradables we’ve come across?!” Robin trailed off in jumbled Spanish, leaving the three boys to burst into laughter. Eventually, they calmed down and started gossiping about the people at the party, messing with more of Bruce’s things, and then trailed onto the conversation about the relationship between Vance and Bruce.
See, everyone knew they liked each other. It showed every time they made contact. Vance talked quieter and was less aggressive toward Bruce; he also had more patience and was almost protective of him. And Bruce would always be there for Vance, talking to him, about him, always knowing what he was doing, what he needed, etc. It was almost too much for the friend group to handle. To fan the flames, they ALWAYS denied it. You could bring it up to them together or one-on-one, and they’d say they’re just friends. Vance even went as far as to say he hated him and that he “tolerated” him because he “had to.” Everyone knew it wasn’t true because they always included one another and would barely handle being apart.
But tonight was different. The boys had come up with a plan. They planned to have Robin stand on the indoor balcony above the main room with a thing of mistletoe while the others managed to get them underneath it. It was flawless, except it had to lack any suspicious tendencies. If either of the boys suspected anything, it was over. They went over the possibilities, sent Robin on his way, and waited for Vance to arrive.
~
Bruce was busy finding a new playlist when Vance walked in. He only knew he showed up when everyone got quiet and whispered the instant the poor man walked through the door. Vance immediately booked it to Bruce, talking about his day and that his gift was the greatest. Bruce was practically glowing since he noticed he was there, an instant dose of serotonin when his “best friend” showed up. Bruce could zone out and listen to Vance talk for literal HOURS if there was time, but unfortunately, there wasn’t because in came Griffin. He was talking to him too quietly, but it seemed like an emergency, so Bruce excused himself and ran off with him.
“Vance, Finney needs help! He got dragged into an argument by accident!” Billy explained after he randomly appeared behind him. Vance raised an eyebrow and shrugged.
“Stupid troublemaker, always making me clean up his messes. That’s supposed to be his stupid boyfriend’s job.” Despite his complaining, he was right behind Billy as he led him to the center of the room, which had
suspiciously
cleared out. No people were in sight, but Bruce was there, turning to look at Vance, confused.
“Where’d all the people go?” Bruce started, glancing down the halls and different rooms, not finding any source of life. Vance shrugged and picked up a cookie.
“To Hell, if I know, I got dragged here because Billy told me–.” Vance paused, looking around the room, seeing no evidence that Billy had even shown up at the party. “What the fuck?” Bruce shrugged at this and rubbed the back of his neck, looking up to sigh but froze.
“Vance-. Vance, look up.” Bruce urged, gently grabbing Vance’s arm to shake it. Vance jerked his arm away and followed his gaze, slowly dropping his frown when the mistletoe caught his eye, hanging above them with all its glory. Vance slowly looked back at Bruce to see him utterly red in the face, and something inside his stomach twisted, and his chest tightened, and he was sure he was dying. He saw Bruce shift slightly, and he stepped closer. The movement made Vance nervous.
“You- you know they probably- set this up. It’s all very suspicious-.” Vance protested. His mind told him to back up, shut this down, and tell him they were just friends. But his body wouldn’t budge, and his mouth worked with him but also against him as he felt himself subconsciously wet his lips. Bruce continued his way over to Vance until he stood before him.
“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, Vance. But I’m not going to lie to you; I’ve been hoping for this to happen all night.” Vance couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He had been telling himself for a whole year now that his feelings were stupid and insane, only to hear that the one he’s been beating himself up for had been hoping to kiss him. His brain was setting off a million signals, but none of them were to stop Bruce. And one impulsive thought rushed to his muscles, and he had no self-control to think as he grabbed Bruce and kissed him.
Then suddenly, everyone came out cheering, and a couple of “I knew it”s were muttered. Vance instantly pulled away and glared at his so-called friends as they whistled and hollered with joy. Bruce squeezed his hand to keep him from attacking them as he kissed his cheek before turning to everyone else.
“Alright, everyone, settle down! It’s gift time!”
~
Everyone gathered in the living room, sitting in a circle as Bruce came around and passed about the gifts to the people they were supposed to go. Vance got a new switchblade with a custom carving of “Don’t fuck with me” on the side of the handle. Billy got a horn for his bike and a journal so he can write down important things due to his memory. Griffin got a bug collector book. Robin got a few new bandanas and a limited-edition horror movie that hasn’t come out yet. Finney got a solar system light for his room and a muscle shirt to match Robin’s favorite, and Bruce got a new baseball bat and choker to correspond with Vance’s.
Once everyone got their gifts and talked for a bit longer, almost everyone left. Billy and Griffin were discussing their presents and interests in the corner of the room,
though Finney was sure they were secretly gossiping
. Bruce was cleaning up messes while Vance was talking loud enough for the whole house to hear. While Finney and Robin were outside, walking around in the cold.
“Why’d you drag me away, Finn? It’s fucking cold out here. You don’t plan to confess you’re undying love to me, do you?” Robin joked, nudging Finney’s arm slightly. Finn giggled and sat on the sidewalk, leaning into the warmth once Robin joined him.
“Actually, no. I just wanted some alone time with you without anyone saying anything.” Robin tilted his head and stared at his boyfriend for a moment before looking down at the road, sighing softly. Finney continued. “It’s wonderful how Vance and Bruce got together tonight. It was very cliche that it was in front of everyone too. Very Vance.”
Robin laughed and nudged his arm. “Almost as bad as when we got together, huh?” Finney laughed along with him and nodded. The silence felt awkward but calm, but Finn knew he had to do this, or he’ll kick himself in the ass later.
“Robin. I have one more gift for you,” he started, clearly nervous, as he pulled a tiny, wrapped box out of his bag. Robin tilted his head before taking it. “I felt it was too special to be given and opened in front of everyone, so I thought I should give it to you myself.” Robin gradually unwrapped it and opened it slowly, revealing the tiny promise ring inside. Before he was able to speak, Finney started rambling again with nervousness.
“I know it’s quite soon, but I feel we’ve come a long way these past two years! And I’ve decided I’m ready to promise the rest of my life to you if you are! I don’t want to rush us into things, but I’m so worried you’ll find someone better than me and leave me for them! And I know you’ve told me constantly that you don’t want anyone else, but I’m just so messed up that I find it hard to believe you’d stay unless you had-” before he could finish, Robin placed a tiny kiss to his lips.
“Mi amor, this ring is lovely. I’m more than happy to wear it as a promise to be yours and get casada the moment we’re ready. Thank you, mi querida.” Finney was stunned at Robin’s response but undoubtedly happy as he kissed him again. Robin pulled a box out just had Finney did and opened it, slipping a ring onto his finger as well. “We had the same idea, and you beat me to the punch, you cabrona.”
Finney laughed and kissed Robin once again before standing, pulling him with him. Robin smiled, intertwining their fingers, and led him back to Bruce’s house.
“Let’s see if you can beat the champion of devouring the sobras de galletas.”
“You’re on, but don’t cry if you lose.”
“As if.”
