Chapter Text
Light and misa have been dating for 3 months now; their relationship is complicated, well, for Light and all, you see as much as it could benefit him, making me happy, he just has a lot of responsibilities in his life right now that he has to maintain his number one priority on, like being Kira. One little slip-up, and his entire plan could go down the drain. So he can't just give me all the attention and needs she wants. Also, misa is a little pain in the ass who doesn't understand the consequences that could happen if they're caught together, even though he explained to her the times they met up. But unfortunately, he can't fully ignore her either; he needs her to stay completely obsessed with him so he can keep using her for his necessities, sigh, so troublesome, probably the only smart thing that Misa could've done was give light that trap phone, I guess. He can contact misa without it being suspicious, and she could.. call him as well. Sigh. Light hates when she calls, he tries as much as he can to keep the phone turned off, but there are times when he forgets to do it, so he (I mean, he doesn't have to) has to sit through misas many “love calls.” Today was one of those days where his mind was somewhere else, more important than his “girlfriend's stupid red phone but he never expected what came for him.
It was 6 pm, around this time, light was locked in his room, studying for a midterm coming up this week. As he's going through his notes, he hears a small buzzing sound coming from his closet. He looks back in confusion, trying to figure out what could be, until it hits him, “the phone” light runs a hand through his hair, sighing in frustration.
“What is it now?” Ryuk asks, he's lying back in a light bed, going through the bag of apple lights bought him not so long ago, light stands up from his desk and walks towards his closet, the buzzing getting louder the more he approaches it.
“It's misa,” he opens the closet door, “I forgot to turn it off yesterday when I texted her.” Light grabs the small phone and shows it to Ryuk.
The caller ID reads. ”misa” Ryuk hums and sits on the edge of the bed, grinning, “Are you gonna answer? You know it's rude to ignore your GirLFrIenD~” the shinigami teases, shoving the last apple in his mouth.
Light ignores the shikigami and stares at the phone buzzing in his hand. He can just let it ring and then turn it off, or he can decline it, but what if it's an emergency? Yeah, right, light scoffs.
“I don't want to deal with her right now,” he answers, rubbing the bridge of his nose just thinking about the amount of brain cells he would lose just by hearing her talk. Ryuk snickers. He starts complaining about how he needs more apples until the phone stops ringing, lights exhale, and as he's about to turn off the phone, it starts ringing again.
“Tch,” Light rolled his eyes and answered the phone.
While the phone call was connecting, he walked back to his desk. The best he could do right now was finish his notes while letting her talk her brain off. He sits down and sets the phone next to his books, then turns the phone on speaker.
“Hello?”
“Oh– hi light! Finally, you answered, "Are you busy right now?”
“I'm studying.”
“Oh yeah, midterms haha..”
“Right.”
The call then becomes quiet, huh? Lights raises his head, glaring at the phone. She's acting strange.
“Do you need something misa?”
“Huh? Oh! Yeah, um…”
The background of the call becomes loud, chattering can be heard, and a faint sound of radios, light raises one of his eyebrows, confused, Ryuk also becomes intrigued, looming over him, listening.
“Ah—um, sorry, um… I was kinda wondering if I could maybe come over for a bit…?”
Light and Ryuk share a look, both questioning Misa's behavior.
“Why? It's pretty late.”
“Well, it’s kinda hard to explain, but—”
A voice cuts in from the background.
“Miss Amane, could you come with us for a moment?”
“Oh—yeah, I’ll be right there.”
Misa came back on the phone, quieter now.
“Um… give me a second, Light… heh…”
Misa muted herself, leaving Light and Ryuk in utter confusion.
“What was that all about?” the shikigami breaks the silence, light leans back in his chair and thinks, well, the obvious is that misa is home and the radio sounds are coming from– the police? No way, light shakes his head. Why would the police be there anyway?
“My guess is something happened in her apartment building,” Light shrugs, “let's just wait.” he grabs his pencil and sharpens it in the meantime. Ryuk huffs, walking away from the area.
A couple of minutes go by, and Light just finished his last set of notes as he closed his notebooks, and he heard Misa unmute her mic. Finally, he grabbed the phone sitting on the table and walked over to his bed.
“Yes—yes, thank you— Light? Are you still there?”
“Yeah, I’m still here.”
“Oh, thank goodness… I’m sorry, that took a while…”
“Misa, what’s going on over there? Why do you need to come over?”
“I—uh—I don’t really know… the police are here, like, inside the building, and they shut everything down. They were questioning people about one of my neighbors on the top floor… I tried asking what was going on, but—um—they just said the first and second floors are a crime scene, and everyone has to leave until they finish collecting evidence…”
It's always trouble with this girl. He sits down in the bed, running his fingers through his hair.
“Hm, if the whole building is being placed under lockdown, then a murder probably took place not so long ago.”
“I was thinking that too… that's scary.”
“Mh.”
Silence again.
“Do you have anywhere else to go? You know it's risky if–”
“I know, I know… trust me, light, you were my last option.”
I was what? This was the first time Light felt his ego being punched straight in him– because of misa out of all people. He lets out a frustrated sigh, flopping down in his bed.
“It's only for a little bit, I swear– I won't be that much of a bother, I'll be so very careful, please!”
light raked his hands over his face. I hope I don't regret this.
“It's fine, get here soon, I'll let my mom know.”
“Omg really!? You’re the best, I'll be there in ten!”
“Hurry up.”
“Yes, I will! I love you, bye!”
“Mhm.”
End call.
Light shuts off the phone and tosses it somewhere in his bed. He stays there for a while, staring up at the ceiling, deep in thought. There was no other choice, well, there was, but he didn't have the energy to deal with a very whiny misa for the night. It's only a couple of hours, and then I don't see her for the rest of the week. He hopes he doesn't see her for the rest of the week.
“Soooo,” Ryuk says, which startled Light, “what happened?” Light raises his body from the bed, sitting in the corner of it.
“She's coming over in a little while.” That answer made the shinigami laugh, which made Light roll his eyes. Here we go.
“You're turning soft light, don't tell me you're catching feelings for her~.” Light glares at the shinigami, which made him continue to laugh out loud.
Light stands up from his seat and starts walking toward his bedroom door. “I would never catch feelings for someone as illiterate as misa” he stops and gazes over his shoulder to Ryuk and smirks. “Don't be so dense, Ryuk, or I'll stop buying you apples.” Light opens the door of his room and walks out. The only thing he could hear was Ryuk's manic laughing, fading away as he walked down the stairs.
As he enters the living room, he sees his mom and sister sitting on the couch, watching the evening news. He rests his arms on top of the couch behind them and tunes in to what they're saying on the TV. The newscaster talks about a mysterious murder that occurred in said apartment building, and the police say that the body was found in a decomposed state, meaning the homicide happened days ago. The building had to be locked down for the safety of the residents. There are still no suspects to be named.
“Oh goodness, that's horrible,” Mrs. Yagami states, shaking her head.
Sayu nods her head, hugging the pillow she has in her lap. She then looks up to see light standing in front of her.
“What do you think, light?” Light stares at her with a raised eyebrow. “You know, since you're smart and all,” sayu teases, sticking her tongue out lightly, playfully rolled his eyes, and shoved his hand over sayu's face. Sayu whines out of protest for him to stop.
“Hey mom misa will be coming over in a little bit if that's okay.” Light asks his mom. Sayu gaps, grabbing his hand, and forces it away from her face.
“Misa is coming!? Yay!” she squeals, jumping in place.
Light's mom stands up, fixing her apron, “Well, good thing you told me so I can make extra food for her,” she smiles at him and starts walking toward the kitchen.
“Wait, so misa is gonna sleep over?” sayu sparkling eyes showed light, the hope she has that he'll say yes. He puts his hands on his hips and shakes his head, which encourages Sayus' protest.
“Ugh, why not! It's so late anyway, she should just stay the night–"Light lightly pushes Sayus ' face away from him and walks away from the living room to the kitchen to his mom. Why does she like misa so much? There was nothing special about that girl. He scowled this girl is gonna be the death of me.
He goes and grabs a cup from the cabinet and fills it with water. As he drinks it, still deep in thought, he hears his mom's voice.
“You know light sayu is right, she should sleep over.” She says while cutting some vegetables across from him, “This could give your dad and me a chance to get to know her.” Lights choke on his water; Dad is gonna be home today, how could I forget? What's wrong with me today? He lets out a sigh and composes himself before speaking.
“I'll see,” Light puts the cup down and gives his mom a half-smile. He walks toward the couch where sayu is sitting with a pout on her face. She makes a “Hmph” sound before throwing a pillow to light him, catches and throws it back.
“You know, light, you should appreciate misa more,” sayu comments, hugging the pillow. Light sits down, grabbing the TV remote sitting on the coffee table. “She is very famous, you know?” Light leans back and responds.
“Mh.”

A couple of minutes go by, Light and sayu are watching one of her soap operas, mostly sayu. Then the doorbell rings, startling them. Sayu quickly stands up, sparklers shining in her eyes.
“I'll get it!” She basically sprints to the door to open it, light exhales, running his hands over his face, and stands up to greet her. But he didn't expect what his eyes saw.
“Cmon cmon light was waiting for you!” She giggled, pulling misa by her arm. Misa followed her, also giggling.
“Aw, really, he's so sweet,” he hears Misa's voice and turns his body to the hallway, that's when he sees her, Misa. But not the misa he knew, this misa looks…normal? She has her hair down, not in her iconic half-up, half-down pigtails. Her face is not beat with makeup, and that annoying red lipstick that stains his cheek is nowhere to be found, a small baby tee, and low-rise jeans. She looks vulnerable, cute– what am I saying?! Light shakes his head to dismiss the thought. Then he looks at the suitcase that she's holding, and his face completely shifts. What the hell is that?
Mrs. Yagami walks into the living room, wiping her hands with a cloth, “Misa, you look pretty. How are you?” giving her a small smile.
Misa bowed down to her. “I'm good. Thank you for having me so late.” She awkwardly chuckled, her eyes traveled to light, but he was already staring at her. It flustered her, but she saw the scowl that he had on his face. Why is he staring at me like that? She pouted and walked forward to light.
“Hi light–”
“Cmon” light cut her sentence, walking towards the stairs, misa then followed along behind him, sayu then grabbed her arm, stopping her in place.
“Are you gonna sleep over?” she playfully whispered to her. Misa blinked, surprised at the question. Misa shrugged at her with a smirk, painting her face.
“Maybe~” then she grabbed the suitcase, and walked up the stairs. In the background, she could hear Sayus ' squeals of excitement, which made misa laugh, but now she has to deal with a very serious light waiting for her upstairs. Sigh.
Light opened the door to his room. She walked in and put the suitcase to lean next to the window. She then turned around and saw a light with his arms crossed, he was leaning over the door, his face still dull, is he angry at me? Why hasn't he said anything to me? Misa takes a seat in lights bed, nervously fidgeting with her hands. She could feel the lights staring into her scalp. Should she talk? No, she should wait. Why is he being this way? He told me I could come for a little while. She lets out a shaky sigh and talks.
“Thank you for letting me stay ov–”
“Why do you have a suitcase?” Light interrupts her again, misa frowns, he keeps cutting me off, the audacity! She crosses her legs and leans her weight on her arms resting on the bed.
“Well, you told me that I could stay over for a while, so I brought my stuff,” she points out to their past call, right? Light lets out a “mh” and walks to where she is, towering over her. Misa raises her head to look at light. He's pretty scary when he's like this. She swallows nervously at the tension between them.
Light analyzes her, did she think “for a while” meant she was staying over the night, for how long did she pack, did she think she could stay here like it's a hotel or something, for gods sake, she's so ignorant.
“And by a while, what do you mean?” The sentence sounded sharper than he wanted to, which made misa bring her head down like a puppy getting scolded. Light takes a deep breath. I can't let her be too scared of me.
He kneels and puts a hand on Misa's knee. “Listen misa you know we can't risk being seen together–" misa slaps Light's hand away and aggressively stands up, making Light fall to the floor.
“I know light! Don't treat me like I'm some child!” she raised her voice at him. Then, it got silent, light was flabbergasted; he never expected in his wildest dreams that misa would speak to him that way, and by the way misa eyes widened, she never expected to raise her voice either. It was awkward. Misa slowly sat back down and cleared her throat.
“What I mean to say is that I understand our situation, but I think logistical thinking...” Light knitted his eyebrows together and began to raise himself from the ground.
“If we want to work together to the best of our abilities, we should get to know each other. You know?” She gave him an awkward smile, but he just stayed quiet. I mean, that is true, I know nothing of her, and she knows nothing about me, too, which is good; he doesn't want her to know anything about him, but she has a point, he doesn't know what her real motives are, pfft– if she even has any. But maybe…
“And since this thing happened to me, it gives me– I mean us an opportunity to spend time together…” That's also true.
“You know what they say, low risk for high rewards, right? Hehe..” Ugh, Light could only mentally roll his eyes. He let out a breath and stood up from the ground, fixing his shirt. His eyes darted over misa nervously fidgeting with her fingers.
“For how long do you have to stay out of your house?” Misa's eyes gleamed with hope.
“A week!” she responded quickly, a smile slowly forming on her face.
Light got closer to her, bending so he was face to face with her, “And you will promise you will not do anything that may cause suspicion? ” he asks, and Misa shook her head.
“I promise I won't cause any trouble, you can trust me!” She brings her pinky finger to his view. Light stares at the finger, thinking about it.
Fuck it.
“Fine, you can stay,” he wraps his pinky with misa and stands straight, her face immediately twisted with joy, like it's almost gonna explode from how excited she is.
“For real! Oh, light, you're the best!” she squealed, swinging their conjoined hands together as she bounced in place. Light pulled her up the bed, letting go of their pinkies shortly after, he put one of his hands on Misa's shoulder to keep her in place. Misa's eyes widened, surprised by the touch.
“A couple of things first…” light began telling her what she was and wasn't allowed to do while she was here, such as not talking about anything related to the death note or the Kira case, etc. You know all that boring stuff. Also, not to interact with his dad that much, which made misa realize that she hadn't met Light's dad yet. Oh man. Anyways, no kissing or hugging in front of his family, which she protested about, but light didn't budge, tsk, no making a mess in his room, no going through his stuff while he's gone, no touching his death note, misa could only nod along, not caring that much about light's dumb paranoia rules. She could only think about how fun this week is gonna be. Talking to him, spending time with him, sleeping in the same bed—
“Misa, are you listening?” Light snaps his fingers in front of her face, bringing her back to reality.
“Ahh, yeah, I am heh,” Light squints at her. She's acting so strange. Why is she being so grown out of the sudden? This is not the misa he met, an annoying, whiny child. She's probably messing with me. I can't let her distract me. He soon gets snapped out of his thoughts when he hears sayu calling from downstairs.
“Light! Misa! Come down already, dinner is ready!” They both look at each other for a second, a second too long. Then light breaks and walks towards his door, misa stays standing there, almost hypnotized, one week with light she smiles to herself, this is gonna be so fun!
“Misa, let's go. The food is gonna get cold,” light signals her to get downstairs, she snaps her head his way, and hurries out the door. He watches her go down the stairs and lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding.
I hope I don't regret this.
