and I’m doing fine, even though you’re still on my mind

Work Text:

Yoko likes to think that Enid is her best friend.

After all, they’ve known each other since they first stepped foot in Nevermore Academy. They try to align most of their classes and attend canoeing practices together. She even helps Enid enhance her gossiping site by providing thorough information.

Suffice to say, they’ve grown close enough this school year to deem each other as best friends, which came as a shock to some of their fellow classmates. For a vampire and a werewolf to become best friends is an achievement in itself.

Despite being friends, rooming with each other, however, seems to be an obstacle.

“Do you want to be roommates?” Yoko asks Enid one day. Enid has been frequenting her dormitory for quite some time now, so the question is inevitable.

Enid pauses from painting her own nails before giving a thoughtful hum. “I think Principal Weems just assigned me a new roommate.”

Now that’s a surprise. “In the middle of the semester?”

“Yep! I really hope we get along. Otherwise, I don’t know how I’ll survive.” Enid drags the hot pink nail polish on the nail of her thumb before lifting her hand. “All done!” She exclaims as she shows her nails now painted rainbow.

They’re beautiful. Very fitting to represent Enid’s bubbly personality that everyone has come to adore. Yoko has come to learn that Enid expresses herself through color, which is rooted from her passion for painting her own nails.

She has witnessed Enid paint her nails several times, enough to assume that there is something intimate about the way she does it to herself. Enid has this razor sharp focus that’s difficult to miss whenever doing so.

On top of that, Yoko has yet to see Enid paint other people’s nails. While she likes to think that they’re good friends, she can’t help but wonder if she’ll overstep Enid’s boundaries by asking.

“Would you like to paint my nails next?”

The smile on Enid’s face is still clear as day, but there is a certain hesitancy that comes from the way she laughs at the request.

“Don’t be silly! Your nails look stunning already.”

“… Alright. Thanks, Enid.” Yoko says, hoping the guilt doesn’t bleed through her words.

The discomfort from Enid’s tone is there. Yoko shouldn’t have asked such a request since she already knows the answer she would receive. And Enid is kind enough to brush it off with her signature bright smile.

Wednesday.

She’s all everyone can talk about. Yoko’s conversations with her friends often revolve around Wednesday nowadays. While she understands why people are either captivated or wretched by her, she doesn’t think it’s worth all the hype.

But then, Enid begins to talk about her.

Without fail, Yoko is always on the receiving end of Enid’s never-ending stories about Wednesday. Not that she minded. She always appreciates the way her friend talks passionately about something, even if it’s her new roommate.

Yoko herself hasn’t had many encounters with Wednesday, but with how much Enid talks about her, she practically knows even the littlest thing about her.

Such as how Wednesday is writing her own novel with the use of a typewriter. Enid often complains about the noise, but Yoko thinks that Enid only dislikes the fact that Wednesday doesn’t want to share what she’s writing.

Yoko also learns that Wednesday is consistent with her gothic theme even in her shared room with Enid. She hasn’t visited Enid’s dormitory yet after Wednesday moved in, but she can already imagine the blatant contrast of Enid’s rainbow and Wednesday’s monochrome.

Enid may complain about Wednesday almost all the time to Yoko, but Yoko is beginning to think that Enid is developing a nasty crush.

Now, more so, with Enid’s latest narratives about the canoe race.

“… and Wednesday was late to retrieve the flag, but we still ended up as winners! Can you believe it? We finally beat Bianca on her own game!” Enid says with much enthusiasm as she puts her nail polish kit on top of the table.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there to help the team.”

“Yoko, for the nth time, it’s okay! I wished you were with us when that happened, but there’s always next year. We’ll defeat Bianca and her team again, that’s for sure!” As Enid removes the nail polish bottles from their kit, she draws them out in a line on the table according to the chronological colors of the rainbow.

“Are you going to re-apply your manicure for the Rave’N?” Yoko asks, earning an eager nod from her friend.

“Yes! Oh, by the way, when are you finally going to ask Divina to go with you?”

The idea of asking Divina about the Rave’N only enraged the butterflies in Yoko’s stomach.

“Only if you ask Wednesday out.”

Enid’s reaction isn’t what Yoko predicted, expecting a high squeal of excitement or anything that falls in the bright realm she’s come to know as Enid. Instead, she only receives a hesitant look before her friend purses her lips together into a tight line.

“I… I don’t think she’s going.” Enid confesses, but Yoko will not relent.

“How do you know? Have you asked her about it already?”

“Wednesday didn’t seem eager at the idea of going. I think she has a lot on her plate right now, especially with the series of killings happening lately.”

Oh.

“Are you still going, though?”

“Of course! It’s not like Wednesday is a reason enough for me to not attend.” Enid says with finality in her words as she opens her bottle of nail polish remover. But Yoko knows Enid, enough to know when her best friend is lying to herself.

Divina is there with her as she walks to the entrance of Rave’N.

In the sea of white, Yoko tries to look for Enid and/or Wednesday, knowing that they stand out no matter what the occasion may be.

To say that she’s concerned for Enid is an understatement. The last time she heard from her was last week when Enid announced (with a poor attempt to disguise her dismay) that Wednesday was going to Rave’N with Xavier.

She hasn’t seen Enid since then.

But as Yoko stands in the middle of the crowd, she sees Enid with a smile like it’s just any other day.

“You look happier than ever.” Yoko compliments, earning a giggle from Enid. “Finally talked about it with Wednesday?”

“I did. Let’s just say we came to an agreement for once.” Enid says before excusing herself to greet her other friends.

Then Yoko hears the whispers among the crowd, some are pointing towards the entrance. When she turns her head to see what the fuss is all about, she sees Wednesday wearing her signature color that makes her stand out from the crowd like a sore thumb. In a good way.

But what’s really eye-catching about Wednesday isn’t her black ruffled dress. No. It’s the all-too familiar rainbow-colored nails on her hands.

Her hands are folded against her stomach as if trying to showcase the colors only one person in school wears.

“Did Enid finally rub on Wednesday?” Divina asks.

“Quite the opposite, really.”

Yoko catches Enid from her peripheral vision, sipping from her bright blue drink with a mischievous smile she rarely sees from her. But one thing is certain: Enid is basking in her success of making everyone link Wednesday to her, and her alone.
