Work Text:

What was it that brought them together, to be united in this perfect love?

It must have been fate in a mortal form that brought them together. He knew from the moment he laid eyes on him that they were meant to be. From then on, they were inseparable. They shared every part of their life with each other. That was how it was to this very day.

Yes. He often reflected upon that day with fondness. It was a day that had changed his life, after all.

Lucifer, an audacious young man in his best years, stood alone on the beach, gazing over the turquoise water with his energetic amber pools. His obsidian hair danced lightly in the ocean breeze. He tried to keep still despite his impatient excitement, resting his cheek against one hand as he traced a finger along his silver necklace. He wore a periwinkle bikini top, his cocoa back covered only by a thin bit of string, and a tight obsidian miniskirt that showed the shape of his hips and the brunet tone of his legs. His sable hair was bound back from his face, complementing his determined cinnamon visage. An elaborate tattoo snaked its way around his visible skin. Furry ears flicked at the top of his head, and he twitched his pitch-dark tail. For a moment, he absorbed herself in these thoughts, of him, and Pulsar.

His ears pricked at the sound of familiar footsteps. He twitched his tail happily and looked up before Pulsar even spoke a word. "Lucifer," he said simply with a smile on his face. His charcoal windows to his soul complemented his ivory strands, brushing against his ears, and belying his daring heart. He was dressed in his usual everyday clothes. He was lily-white and sturdily built. Furry ears flicked at the top of his head, and he twitched his pale tail. As Lucifer drew nearer, he caught a note of Pulsar's familiar scent, a mixture of earthiness and sourness that was uniquely his. He smiled to himself. It always reminded him of the time they shared.

"Pulsar. It's nice of you to show up on time," Lucifer said, energetic depths flashing.

"Since when do you care about punctuality?" he shot back.

"Since just now." Lucifer gave him a quick kiss. With that, they began to walk along the beach.

"So, Babe," Lucifer began.

"So, Love," he mirrored.

"How's that project going? You know the one."

Lucifer tilted his head forward, pressing their foreheads together, and whispered, "What is it, Pulsar? Have you... been in pain, too?"

"Lucifer, it's..." Pulsar took a shuddering breath and whispered, "It's just... I'm just no good, Lucifer. I can never do anything right... I guess I'm sorry. I just ruin everything. I'll probably ruin this... I... forget it. I just can't..."

Lucifer placed his hands on Pulsar's cheeks, stroking his cheekbone as he soothed, "Pulsar... you're not alone. I know what it's like -- it happened to me too. I know that pain. My legacy of failure... sometimes it still comes back to haunt me. I know it's not easy." Lucifer placed his hands on Pulsar's shoulders. They held each other as tears trickled down their cheeks and dripped onto the shifting sands to be carried away into the sea. With time and soothing embraces, their pain dissipated into a mist swept out by the ocean breeze and into the setting sun.

Yes, they both knew the one. Pulsar frowned a bit and muttered, "Oh, screw you." At Lucifer's delighted snickering, he added, "Yeah, let's see you do better."

"Relax. You can be a hobbyist. Me..." His voice trailed off.

"You?" Pulsar prodded, before following Lucifer's gaze. In the distance, they could see the outline of a building that brought back memories for both of them.

"... That place." Lucifer unconsciously drew closer to Pulsar, who wrapped his arm around him.

"Funny, seeing it like this," Pulsar murmured.

"Funny..." he echoed. "How long has it been? Do you remember?"

"Not that long. It'll never be long enough." Pulsar gave Lucifer a thoughtful squeeze before releasing him. "But, look, Lucifer. We're alive. We've survived."

"I know that!" Lucifer interjected. "You don't have to treat me like a kid."

"Really? With the way you clung onto me you could've fooled me."

"Clung? You wish I would cling to you," he sniffed. "Come on, meathead." He swiftly set off walking down the beach, and Pulsar, knowingly rolling his eyes, followed.

After a few moments, they found themselves walking down the beach again. Something rose to the front of Lucifer's mind -- something he had been trying to beat back all this time. It was so special to him to be with Pulsar, and he didn't want to pass that time making them both feel horrible. But it just wouldn't leave him alone.

With concern, Pulsar turned his determined pools toward Lucifer. "Lucifer? What's wrong?"

"Pulsar... it's..."

And at that moment everything came together, all of the magic and the hurt that had been building that day, and he locked his crystals with his and whispered, "You can tell me."

It was like a floodgate burst, or some barrier of fear had been struck down. Lucifer shook his head and everything came out at once. "It's just something that happens... with time. It's been so long since I was born. So many things have happened since then. All of it... it presses down on my mind. It hurts, Pulsar. At times I only wish to rest in peace. I've seen too much...."

Pulsar listened silently and solemnly. At last, when all the words had left Lucifer and he was at a loss for words, Pulsar reached out to him and took a deep breath to whisper back, "Lucifer... that's awful. I wish that weren't how it is. I wish I could say more. Lucifer...." Lucifer's eyes began to burn, and he abruptly pulled Pulsar into a fierce embrace. Pulsar's depths widened at first, but then he too felt overwhelmed by emotion and succumbed to the warmth of Lucifer's touch.

"You," Lucifer whispered, his breath hot on Pulsar's ear. "As long as you're here, I'll be all right." They held each other as tears trickled down their cheeks and dripped onto the shifting sands to be carried away into the sea. With time and soothing embraces, their pain dissipated into a mist swept out by the ocean breeze and into the setting sun.

They basked in each other's quiet companionship for a few moments.

"Look... it's the sunset."

Lucifer lifted his head at Pulsar's words to behold the dying sun's terra radiance. "How beautiful."

After a moment of silence, Pulsar said quietly and seriously, "Its destiny, isn't it? Us, together."

Lucifer clasped Pulsar's firm hand and murmured in response, "A love this true must be fated to be."

Pulsar brought their clasped hands to his lips. "As long as the world goes on, as long as time flows... we will be together."

Lucifer sighed with contentment and brought Pulsar closer. He gazed at the beautiful aureate rays of the falling sun, thinking about everything that had transpired on this day and all that would pass between them.

"You'll hurt your eyes doing that," Pulsar added.

"Oh never mind my eyes," Lucifer sighed, kissing Pulsar to shut him up. When they parted, he murmured, "I love you, Pulsar."

"I love you too, Lucifer."

Their lips met, and starless strands met fair ones, aflame in the dying light. The sand was their witness and the rumbling ocean their approving audience, and Pulsar, his eternally faithful lover. Lucifer thought to himself that nothing could be more perfect in the world.
