Work Text:
today is new year’s eve, the night that marked the start of a fresh year, brimming with new experiences and joys. tonight, a full moon visited, hanging in all its glory in the dark sky.
11:46pm.
tsukasa swings his feet contentedly to his music, and stares up at the beauty of the sky. not that there was much to look that, but a pair of distinct stars greeted his eyes, a sight for sore eyes. he’s engrossed in the beauty of the moment, drumming his fingers idly. he loves staring into the night sky, with no certain thoughts in mind. he likes seeing all the different sides of the moon, no matter how cracked or bruised it might get from the journey across galaxies. he likes how it glows, how it gives him a strange sense of comfort that he couldn’t explain.
until, his thoughts were interrupted by a certain someone.
“tsukasa-kun!”
tsukasa’s ears perk up. “you’re here!”
“to see you,” he greets him warmly, patting his shoulders.
tsukasa doesn’t even need to turn around to recognise that voice he’d had swooned over for the longest time. kamishiro rui, the director of his troupe, here to spend the night of new year’s eve with him.
however, he’s still as eager to turn around to see rui’s face in the moonlight greeting him, purple hair moving gently in the wind and beautiful smile prominent, looking effortlessly perfect even at such a late hour. and purely just to see him. smiling to himself, heat rushes to his face just from the thought of them spending time alone together. no tsukasa, get your act together! he scratches his neck subconsciously in shame. “i’m glad you showed up,” he mumbles, unable to face rui at the moment. rui smiles wider, if that was even possible, and joins him in sitting on the rooftop.
11:48pm.
“of course i’d show up,” rui replies calmly, swinging his feet without a care in the world. “i’m a fan of tsukasa-kun, aren’t i?” tsukasa’s shoulders relax a bit more, but his heart threatened to jump out of his chest from how hard it was beating. rui doesn’t make any more comments, but tilts his attention to the sky instead.
11:50pm.
“i was looking at the night sky, it’s pretty,” tsukasa gulps, avoiding eye contact.
rui nods in solemn agreement, and looks at the sky. they sit in silence, but not an awkward silence. a silence that they sometimes come across while hanging out together. it’s quiet, but a comfortable quiet that both rui and tsukasa find comfort in. an unspoken, comforting silence they can both enjoy together, and rui loves being so contented with the silence that he would hate if he was alone. although he experiences this with his friends too, tsukasa is special. it feels warmer with him, as if he he radiated warmth that was able to warm even his heart. he eminently likes spending time with tsukasa.
11:53pm.
“look, it’s a full moon tonight,” tsukasa muses out loud, loud enough for rui’s sharp ears to hear. “it’s shining so brightly!” rui squints to see.
“you’re right,” he smiles, admiring the glow it gave off in the dark. rui pauses for a moment to admire the other, then decides to ask a simple question. “do you know why the moon shines?” this catches tsukasa’s attention, but he scoffs at said simple question.
“i’m not five!” he looks to the side. “..but you can tell me why.”
“hehe, as expected of tsukasa-kun!” rui suddenly grows more serious. “it shines because it reflects the light of the sun.”
seeing how puzzled tsukasa looked, rui takes the silence as a signal to continue. “hm, isn’t it interesting? they work together to shine, the sun and the moon.” tsukasa takes all of this in, nodding fervently.
“it’s like us!“ tsukasa blurts out without much thought, pointing at the glowing moon. “we work together to shine, and you’re the moon!” rui is amused.
11:56pm.
“oh? i think you’d be the sun.”
“..the sun? are you calling me round?”
“no tsukasa-kun, you have a way of lighting up everybody’s lives,” he chuckles, secretly enjoying his reaction. the star watches with wide eyes, prompting him to continue. rui looks down at his shoes, a new emotion overlaying his eyes like a haze. “a sun that makes everybody smile, it’s rare to come by. from the bottom of my heart, you make my world brighter. ..i’m thankful for you.”
rui stops himself, and he goes completely red. oh, he didn’t mean to ramble, and he must’ve sounded so weird, and what would tsukasa-kun think? he shouldn’t have—
“and you’re the moon,” tsukasa manages to splutter. “to me, you still manage to shine, even without the sun’s light. but..! we shine brighter together, so you aren’t going anywhere, for the rest of your life! wahaha!” tsukasa exclaims the last sentence with extreme confidence, with a brighter smile to emphasise his words. turning away from the moon, rui smiles just as bright.
“and i don’t plan to.”
he looks back down at tsukasa,to see that his eyes are glossed in an unreadable emotion that he swears looked so very fond, and he leans in closer, and he’s so close, he’s so close he can smell the sweet scent of peaches he’s grown to become smitten with, and his cyan lock of hair was brushing tsukasa’s face from how close he was, and,
at that very moment, a solar eclipse occured.
the sun’s lips met the moon’s.
12:00am.
as fireworks set off in the night sky, a new year had begun. rui melts into the kiss and holds tsukasa’s waist to bring him closer ever so gently, and his heartbeat roars into his ears. he feels an odd sense of calmness wash over him, and he doesn’t feel nervous, he feels safe. he feels relief, he feels happiness. happiness, safety and relief that tsukasa feels the same way be does. his heartbeat settles down and he softens into the moment, letting any sort of rational thought melt away. all he wanted right now was to remember this moment, kissing tsukasa, and only him. the world around them fades away, and rui feels tsukasa smile against the kiss.
unfortunately, rui has pull away for air, leaving tsukasa’s smile to turn into a frown. both their faces were flushed, rui felt absolutely giddy, but in a good way. he’s simply happy to be able to spend new year’s with him.
“happy new year, my sun.”
tsukasa’s face turns into a brighter shade of red, if that was humanely possible. to defend himself, he launches his body right into rui, falling into him. of course, rui is there to catch him, and they end up staring back at the night sky, and they’re both looking at the same bright source of light in the sky, this time with beautiful fireworks exploding around it.
12:04am.
rui also loves staring into the night sky, with no certain thoughts in mind. he likes the sun’s glow that is reflected by the moon, even though staring at the sun for too long might hurt his eyes. his likes how the moon shines with the help of the sun, working together to light up each other’s worlds. he likes how it glows, how it gives him a strange sense of comfort that he couldn’t explain, just like how tsukasa feels about the moon.
but they know now, because tsukasa is his sun, and rui is his moon. they light up each other’s worlds, in their own unique way. new year’s fireworks crackled away in the distance, but neither of them were paying attention, too busy soaking up each other’s presences. and as rui cuddles a gently snoring tsukasa in his arms, even his snore is adorable to him.
he decides that he likes watching this sun far better, reflecting his light and glowing himself.
