I turn back to the stove to watch the eggs cook. “So, I wanted to ask, is there anyone coming over today to celebrate?”
He laughs. Laughs. Like the very idea is ludicrous.
“Don’t be silly Mom,” he says. “No one wants to come to my party, and even if they did, they'd be the laughing stock of the school. I understand perfectly! I would never do that to anyone. I'll just decorate my own small cake and eat it by myself.”
Oh.
And here I thought “it breaks my heart” was poetic license. My chest hurts so badly I can hardly breathe.
“Rui…” my husband says.
“Don’t worry, Dad, really!” Rui’s voice is so insistent I almost fall for it. Our son is a talented little actor in his own right. Rui scratches the back of his neck. “Actually, truly, please don’t worry. It hurts more when you pity me.”
