Chapter 1: A Heartache in the Making

Chapter Text

“Satine!” Ambria shouts. It has been two weeks since Satine had come back home, and four weeks since Master Kenobi had fallen into a coma.

“Ambria! What’s wrong?” Satine asks, worriedly.

“Skywalker left a message on your comm, he said the healers want to speak to his family immediately.” Ambria replays the message by memory and Satine widens her eyes fearfully. “I will watch over everything while you are gone. Mandalore will be in safe hands, Satine.” Ambria hands Satine a travel bag that she had already previously packed for her friend. “I will await your arrival and then the news you bring.”

“Thank you, Ambria. I don’t know what I would do without you!” Satine hugs her and quickly leaves for her ship.

Ambria looks as she runs and she prays that Master Kenobi will be alright, otherwise, it might break Satine’s already cracking heart.

Satine arrives at the Temple, Anakin, and Ahsoka waiting for her there.

“Duchess.” Anakin greets, nodding his head. “Master Che wanted to speak with us after you had arrived.”

“Okay then, lead the way.” Satine states and Anakin leads both Ahsoka and Satine into the Head Healer’s office. Master Che is at the desk, looking gravely at the papers in front of her.

“Master Che,” Anakin states, announcing their arrival.

“Please, sit.” Vokara waves to the chairs in front. They take their seats and Vokara begins. “As you know, Obi—Master Kenobi has been in a coma for four weeks now.” Vokara pauses. “That is very uncommon, and he should have awoken by now. We have checked everything thoroughly and there is no reason as to why he won’t wake up. So far, he shows no signs of waking up.”

“So why won’t he wake up then?” Anakin interrupts and Vokara sighs.

“I wish I could tell you, I wish I myself knew. It could be the head trauma he received, the bleeding. But I have no answer to your question.”

“There has to be some solution, he can’t just not be waking up!” Anakin exclaims.

“Believe me, Skywalker. I wish I had a solution, but sometimes, the patient just doesn’t wake up.” Vokara fires back.

“What will you do?” Ahsoka asks, eyes teary.

“We will keep him on the machines keeping him alive. After a few weeks or months, his family will be given the decision to cease his suffering and let him join the Force or remain in a coma.” Vokara states and the three visitors immediately start to protest, but Vokara raises her hand, silencing them. “As one of his main family members, I refuse to pull the plug. Even if one of you or someone in charge ever decides to request it, I will refuse until I can refuse no longer, that either means him awaking or me taking my last breath.” Vokara finalizes and the three visitors in the room nod, agreeing with her.

“You are all free to go now. I just needed to share that with you three.” Vokara states and Anakin immediately gets up and leaves. Probably to go and see his Senator, Satine thinks.

“Will you update me as soon as possible if you see signs of him waking?” Satine asks and Vokara smiles a little.

“Of course, and that goes for you too, Padawan Tano.” Vokara states and Ahsoka thanks her.

“I’m afraid I must be going, Mandalore still has lots of work for me to do.” Vokara nods in understanding. “However, may I see him first?”

“Yes, he is in his usual room.” Vokara states and Satine nods, knowing where that is.

Satine leaves the room and walks to Ben’s room. Vokara had made a separate room for Ben as he had been in the Halls of Healing a lot since he was a child. Mostly because of visions, Ben had told her one time. She opens the door and steps into the room. There in the middle of the room, lays Ben in a white hospital gown, and machines hooked up to him to keep him alive. She walks to his side and moves the hair out of his face fondly.

“I wish you would wake up already, darling,” Satine whispers. “Everyone misses you. Especially me.” Satine leans down and kisses the top of his head. “I have to leave, but I promise I will be back to visit. By the time I come back, I expect you to be awake and snarky as ever.” Satine lets out a watery laugh. “I love you, dear.” She kisses him one more time and leaves the room.

After visiting Ben, Satine took her ship back to Mandalore. She lands at the dock and Ambria comes racing to meet her.

“How is he?” Ambria asks curiously.

“He is still in a coma,” Satine whispers. “His Healer doesn’t know why he won’t wake up, or even if he will.” Satine manages to say.

“I’m so sorry, Satine.” Ambria sadly replies. Satine lets out a sob, the day’s events catching up to her. Ambria hugs her, and Satine cries on her shoulder.

“What if he never wakes up? It’s a possibility now.” Satine sobs and Ambria sighs.

“You just have to trust that he will wake up. Trust in what he believes in, the Force, to keep him safe and bring him back to you.” Ambria states and Satine nods. “Come on, you need to rest.” Ambria leads her away from her ship and into the palace. The sun sets over Mandalore, the stars twinkling in the night sky.

Two Years Later

“Satine!” Ambria shouts. It has been two years since the fall of Mandalore. And two years since Master Kenobi had fallen into a coma.

“Ambria, what’s wrong?” Satine asks, worriedly.

“Master Che just commed. She wants you at the Temple immediately, it’s Ben.”
