They were sitting on the couch, Patrick curled into Travis’s side, eyes closed as he dozed. Travis had one hand in his hair, gently petting him, the other tapping mindlessly through his phone. He paused on a particular Instagram post.
“Hey, babe?” He called quietly, tugging gently on a lock of hair to get Patrick’s attention.
Patrick’s eyes fluttered open and he blinked sleepily up at his boyfriend. “Hmm?” He murmured, straightening up slightly.
“Do you wanna, like, come out?” Travis asked, turning his head to stare seriously at Patrick. Patrick straightened up fully, suddenly wide awake.
“What.”
“Do you want to come out? As a couple? Publicly?” Travis repeated.
Patrick slowly nodded. “I mean, I’ve always wanted to be out publicly with you. Go on actual dates. Things like that,” He admitted quietly. “But when?”
“How about now?” Travis suggested. “Post a New Year’s post on Instagram, put a caption of something along the lines of can’t wait to go into next year with this guy , and that’s that.”
Patrick stared incredulously at his boyfriend. “Right before the playoffs?” He asked, voice high. Travis snorted. Of course, that was what he was worried about. “Won’t that be a distraction?” Patrick finished, looking concerned.
Travis huffed out a laugh. “Babe, most of the team knows we’re together. Andy knows. Donovan and Veach know, which means the execs know. PR knows. Just because we say that we’re fucking without them knowing doesn’t mean they aren’t prepared for us to come out. I know they already have the Twitter statement written.”
Patrick stared at him. “We are not saying that we’re fucking.”
Travis sighed, rolling his eyes. “You get my point, though. So, are you down?”
Patrick let out a short laugh. “Fuck it, sure, why not,” He agreed, clambering over into Travis’s lap. He kissed him gently for a moment before pulling away just far enough that their lips were almost brushing. “You gonna kiss me at midnight?” He murmured. “Finally take a photo to show me off?” He let out a soft giggle.
Travis grinned at him, leaning in to give him a soft peck. “You know it, baby,” He responded. Patrick laughed, turning slightly and burying his head into Travis’s shoulder. They clung to each other for a moment, letting the magnitude of what they were about to do sink in.
“Y’know we’re going to break the internet, right?” Travis asked. Patrick brushed a kiss against the side of his neck before leaning back, still settled firmly in his lap. Travis wasn’t very inclined to move him, and Patrick seemed happy from his perch.
“Yeah, it’s going to be chaotic.” Patrick’s brows furrowed and Travis lifted a hand, gently rubbing at his cheek.
“Hey, it’s gonna be okay,” He murmured, leaning their foreheads together. “We don’t have to do it like this if you don’t want to. We can instead meet with PR and draw up a plan instead.”
Patrick shook his head, smiling. “Nah, it’s okay. I’m sure we’re going to have to do the wildest press conference ever, though.”
Travis groaned. He hated doing press.
His phone dinged, alerting him that it was almost midnight. He gathered Patrick into his arms and stood up, making Patrick yelp and grab him by the shoulders. “To the balcony!” He announced, walking towards the door. The dogs followed them out, excited in the cool air. He set Patrick down, pressing a kiss to the top of his head before moving to set up his phone to take a photo.
They clung together for a moment before watching the countdown on Patrick’s phone. When they reached about fifteen seconds, Travis set up his phone for a timed photo before sweeping back over to Patrick.
Ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Seven.
Six.
Five.
Four.
Three…
Two…
“One,” Travis announced before pulling Patrick in to kiss him firmly on the lips. They kissed for a long moment, even after the camera flash went off. Patrick eventually pulled away, breathless. "Happy new year, my love," Travis murmured. Patrick grinned up at him, giving him another peck on the lips.
“I hope that photo was good,” Patrick teased, linking their fingers together before tugging Travis towards the phone. Travis laughed loudly.
“If not, we can always retake it.” He winked at his boy, grinning when Patrick flushed.
The photo was lovely, and once they were back inside and had the dogs settled, they settled onto the couch, making their Instagram and Twitter Posts.
