“Evans, wait!”
But Lily can’t wait and she marches on, the storm raging around her, around them, as James follows her outside. Suddenly she turns and when she looks at him her eyes are blazing with anger and he stops, his hair plastered to his forehead, and stares at her.
“Did you mean it?” She asks, her voice cracking, and he swallows, but as he looks at her she sees his resolve strengthen and he approaches her in long strides, stopping right in front of her.
“No. I didn’t mean it.” He shakes his head, his voice full of emotion, rough, more frantic with every word. “You know I didn’t! I- there’s no one else for me than you, there never was, there never will be. Not when you couldn’t stand me, not now that you only see me as a friend, not when I’ll have to watch you fall in love with someone else-” He stops and looks down, his mouth twisted in a grimace as if the thought pains him. “The truth is that I love you. I’m in love with you and it kills me, but I don’t care. I don’t care because it’s the worst and the best I’ve ever felt.”
The rain falls on them, seeping through their clothes, as Lily grabs James’ shirt and tugs him towards her. She barely registers his surprise, the slight widening of his eyes, in her eagerness to feel his lips on hers. She has gone all seventeen years of her life without it, but now she feels she might die if she doesn’t kiss him right now. She sighs in relief at the soft press of his mouth and kisses him until they are both smiling so wide they can’t help but break apart. “I love you, too, you idiot.”
