Disco Night (Date?)

Summary:

David takes Exer to the roller skating rink in town.

Work Text:

This was the day Exer died. At the hands of his own best friend. So devastating for him. A best friend wasn’t supposed to betray him like this.

But alas, this was how it all ended. Not how he imagined it, but he only hoped it would be quick and painless.

Goodbye Lucy-Furr. Farewell, father. Hasta la vista David. Aka his torturer.

“Could you stop being so dramatic and relax? It’s just roller skating.” David was already in the rink, waiting for Exer to man the hell up and join him.

“If anything happens to me, I leave everything I own to Lucy-Furr,” Exer let out a dramatic sniffle, “She was my one true friend.” At least she didn’t try to put four wheels of death under each of his feet. His legs felt like jello. How he was still standing was a complete mystery, but Exer was pretty sure it had to do with his ironclad grip on the edge of the rink.

David gawked, “What about me ? Am I not your best friend anymore?”

“From what you’re making me wear right now,” he made a big show of indicating his outfit with one hand, the other gripping the railing for his life, “I think you’ve been demoted.”

“Excuse you, but there’s a theme going on tonight.” David gestured to the space around them, the entire rink being lit by colorful lights and the disco ball in the center room reflecting tiny beams of light throughout the room, “It’s disco night, man. And I wasn’t going to let the opportunity of dressing up like a 70’s partier slip by.”

And apparently, that dream included Exer, who instantly regretted letting David into his home after he was forced into some colorful bell bottoms and a pair of roller skates. This was not how he imagined his weekend. “You just had to bring me along for the ride?”

“Who else would I bring?”

Exer could think of sooo many other people, “Let’s see. There’s Brenda, your sister, Ronald, Pamela, some random kids from school who follow you around like you’re some kind of deity-”

“Okay, okay, I get it,” David grabbed onto Exer’s wrists, prying his fingers from the railing, “But I wanted to skate with you.”

If David’s face wasn’t so pretty, I would punch it.

Wait, what?

Before Exer could get flustered from the voice of his inner monologue, David yanked him into the rink.

It was at the moment when Exer’s legs decided to give out on him. Which in doing so launched Exer full force into David, the momentum bringing them both down.

Aside from the first slip up, Exer didn’t have any serious falls. It took Exer a while before his embarrassment died down enough for him to actually listen to David and his instructions.

His instructions were erratic and made absolutely no sense, but it distracted Exer from continuously losing focus and starting at David’s legs.

Exer blamed the bell bottoms. They left none of his curves up to the imagination.

“Exer, Focus!” David clapped his hands as hard as he could right in front of Exer’s face.

Shit, he was staring again, wasn’t he?

The cracking sound brought Exer back to reality, the suddenness of it causing him to lose balance and trip. He overcorrected, falling backwards instead. The only noise he heard was David’s laughter as Exer laid on the ground like a starfish. He pondered on how his life has gotten to this point.

It took a few minutes for David to somewhat calm down, “A-are you okay?” He bent near Exer’s head, his smile wide and it was obvious he was trying to hold in more laughter.

“I just saw my life flash before my eyes,” Exer placed the back of his hand on his forehead, as if he were in some cheesy movie, “God, I was amazing.”

That got a few more giggles out of David. Exer tried to ignore the warm feeling that brought him.

David stood back up, extending his hand, “Come on, drama queen. I think you’ve had enough near death experiences for one night.”

Was the ride to David’s house painful? Yes. Yes it was. Exer’s muscles were already starting to ache in addition to the manpower he used riding his bike, and he was positive that they would be worse in the morning.

“You don’t have to give me a ride home man. I’ll be fine walking.”

Nope, that wasn’t going to fly with Exer. So pain it was.

The night ended with a success. Exer was ever so slightly better at roller skating (even though he refused to let go of David), and their stomachs were full from the buffet of food they ordered before leaving.

When they did get back to David’s house, they were both hesitant about going their separate ways.

“Thanks for joining me tonight, man. It was fun.” David did eventually get off, and Exer tried to pretend like it didn’t feel as if a part of him was leaving, too. David started making his way to his front door, “Later!”

Dammit.

“David!” Exer jumped off his bike, leaving it to fall on the ground as he ran to David.

David didn’t realize what was happening, key halfway turned in its knob, “Yes-?”

Exer, once again, tackled him in the torso. But they didn’t go flying backwards this time. David was frozen still as Exer wrapped his arms tighter. Once he did realize what was going on, he returned the hug, arms just as tight around Exer’s shoulders.

When they parted, David’s face was beet red. Exer knew his was as well, but he didn’t care.

“Okay, bye!” Exer retreated as fast as he could, picking his bike off the ground. When he looked back, David was still standing there, staring at him. Exer threw him one last wave and sped off.

He felt eyes glued to his back all the way down the road.

“Lucy-Furr, I need your help.”

Exer took a shower as soon as he got home. He needed to calm down and stop his head from feeling too hot. Lucy-Furr sat patiently on the foot of his bed, watching him pace around his room.

“It was just us hanging out. That’s it,” Exer stopped pacing for a second, looking at Lucy-Furr, “right?”

It was clear she had enough of his rambling. Lucy-Furr got up from her spot and tried over to his pillow, resting her paw on it.

Exer took a deep breath, “You’re right. I need sleep. Then I’ll be fine.” He shut off the lights before getting situated in bed. Exer started at the ceiling and went over what happened that night.

They went to the roller skating rink. They got food. They went home. But it felt like more than that. Exer couldn’t explain why though.

He shut his eyes, determined to fall asleep.

Exer’s eyes snapped open, realization crashing over him.

Shit.

Tonight was a date, wasn’t it?

Before he could dwell on the thought, Lucy-Furr pressed a paw into his cheek and let out a his.

“Okay, okay, I’ll sleep.”

He shut his eyes once again, mind racing. But decided it didn’t matter.

Whether it was just two friends hanging out or a full on date, it was the best date Exer’s ever been on.
