Of all the things Scott was expecting to wake up to, muffled sobs was not one of them.
Confused, he let out a tired groan and shifted slightly in an attempt to find the source of the noise, only succeeding in tangling his body in the sheets. The crying quieted even more when the person realised that Scott was awake.
Blearily, he forced his eyes open, blinking a few times as exhaustion weighed down on his eyelids from the events of the previous day. The darkness of the room shrouded everything around them in a cloak of blacks and greys, though the light of the moon peering through the window produced just enough light to allow Scott to see Jimmy sitting at the bed.
The younger man was a mess. His blonde hair sticking up in every direction like he had grabbed at and ran his fingers through it, curled up as though trying to make himself as small as possible, hand clamped over his mouth, tears streaming down his face, looking over at Scott with wide and fearful red eyes.
Pushing himself up into a sitting position, Scott allowed the blankets to pool around his waist, still tangled slightly around his legs, worry clear in his expression.
"Jimmy?" His voice was soft as to not startle him, but it was ineffective.
Jimmy flinched away ever so slightly, his back thumping against the wall, his hand dropping from his face to his lap and he lowered his head.
He looked almost sheepish. The tears continued to flow as he looked away from the cyanette, sniffling quietly.
"Jimmy, love, what's wrong?" Kicking the blankets away, Scott shuffled forward to sit in front of the taller man.
"N-nothing," Jimmy muttered, his voice cracked as he raised a hand to wipe at his face. "It's nothing important, it's fine."
"It's clearly not nothing if you're sitting here, in the dark at whatever-o'clock crying about it." Scott cupped Jimmy's cheek as the other man scowled at the wall opposite them
"Trust me Scott, I'm fine. You'd just think that I'm being a crybaby, don't worry about it." Scott frowned, not expecting the self-deprecating way Jimmy spoke.
"Jimmy," He hesitated. "I wouldn't think that you were a crybaby. It's not bad to cry. In fact, I think crying makes a person stronger."
Jimmy's head snapped up, staring at Scott in shock. "You think-"
Scott nodded, a soft, concerned smile on his face.
Jimmy inched forward slightly before hesitating, then backing away again, shaking his head. "No, no. You-" He paused, swallowing. "You're lying to me. You don't actually believe that."
"I do. I do believe that. I'm not lying to you Jim, I would never lie to you." Jimmy bit his lip curling in on himself more. His cheeks had dried by that point, though tears welled up in his eyes again.
"I'm sorry." His voice was barely above a whisper, his breathing became uneven as sobs wracked his body again. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay." He pulled Jimmy into a hug, careful of his wings as he wrapped his arms around him, tucking his head under his chin. "You didn't do anything wrong. There's nothing to apologise for. Do you want to tell me what happened?"
"Please don't leave me. Please. I- I couldn't- I don't-" He gasped out a sob, attempting to get his breathing under control before he continued, despite being unsuccessful. "I don't know what I'd do if you left me, please don't leave me."
"I'm not gonna leave you, Jim. I would never leave you, I would never abandon you. Do you- can you tell me what makes you think that? What makes you think that I'm going to just leave you like that?" His voice cracked as he spoke.
"They said you would, they said-" Jimmy's voice was barely above a whisper as he cried. Scott shushed him before speaking again.
"Who did?"
"The Watchers." Scott stiffened slightly, though Jimmy didn't seem to notice. He simply continued with what he was saying, his voice tapering off into a murmur. "The ones- the rogues, not- not the ones who follow the- the lenience. The ones who brought us here. They- they talk to me." He swallowed. "Sometimes."
"Don't listen to them. It doesn't matter what they say or how certain they may sound, when it comes to stuff like this, they are never right. They are lying to you and you should never listen to them. They have done nothing but hurt everyone here, over and over again. They are not to be trusted under any circumstance. Trust me when I say that. Trust Grian when he says that we are all going to make it out of here. Trust Scar when he says that everything will be okay in the end. Trust us. Don't trust the rogues, Trust us." Scott cringed slightly upon mentioning Grian and Scar's words to the two of them. As much as they all desperately wanted to believe it, deep down, they all knew it was a lie. They all knew that the only way out of this situation was death, and even then, that wasn't a guarantee. "Now c'mon, come back to bed. We should both get back to sleep."
Jimmy shook his head. "No, no- I can't. I can't sleep, the-they'll just come back. I- I can't bare that. Not again, not again." He dissolved into sobs again, face buried into the crook of Scott's neck, his tears staining the shorter man's t-shirt.
"It's okay, Jim, it's okay. They can't get you, not while I'm here, I won't let them. Just, please you need sleep, you don't want to spend all of tomorrow absolutely exhausted because you got no sleep tonight. I promise you that everything will be okay, now we just need to go to sleep. Both of us. Okay?"
"O-okay." Jimmy allowed Scott to tug him back up to the top of the bed, pausing so that he could shift the blankets out of the way to lay underneath them.
With the blankets pulled up under their chins, and Jimmy tucked away safely against Scott's chest, no longer convulsing with sobs, the two let themselves drift off.
"You're warm," Jimmy murmured, half asleep already, tears drying on his cheeks. Scott hummed in response, pulling the blond closer to him as he pondered the words he had spoken to calm him. The promises he had made that he knew would be broken within a week.
No one would be okay. This was a death game and many had died already. Scar, Ren and Jimmy were all on their third lives, eyes red and skin ashen. No one was going to make it out of this. Though, Scott supposed that it didn't mean they couldn't enjoy the good things while they lasted.
The things like this. Laying here with his husband by his side, knowing that they were both safe, that no harm would come to them while in the comfort and safety of their own little hobbit hole style home in the field of flowers.
Scott was content with this. Not with the death and destruction that plagued this godless server, no. But with the peace that came with the night, the tranquility that the moon served.
And so, he allowed himself to drift off, his beloved clutched safely to his chest, already deep asleep, breath having evened out minutes ago.
Warm, content, safe .
