Work Text:

The first time Uravity and Dynamight tried flying together, it wasn’t exactly planned.

They were on patrol when they crossed paths with a known pick-pocket named Lockdown. His quirk allowed him to lock two objects together by touching them simultaneously, and while it wasn’t particularly dangerous, it had proven to be a challenge for a number of rookie heroes.

One had gotten locked to the lid of a dumpster. Another had so many moderately sized items locked to him that he just couldn’t bare the weight and was found collapsed, but unharmed, on the sidewalk. The quirk always wore off eventually, and the perpetrator always got away. In short, he was an absolute nuisance.

But the two U.A. grads wanted to prove they had an edge over their counterparts— after all, how many rookies could say they’d taken on full-fledged super villains as teenagers? Apprehending a low-level criminal would be a snap!

Or at least it would have been if Katsuki hadn’t become quite so engrossed in watching Ochaco complete a lengthy wall run to grab Lockdown from behind and flip him to the ground. But how could he not? She’d been working on that move for days! Hell, he’d even helped her practice at their agency’s gym. So of course he felt a swell of pride seeing her execute it so flawlessly in the heat of a fight— completely unrelated to the excitement on her face when she caught his eye.

Unfortunately, that lapse in attention gave Lockdown the opportunity to buck Ochaco off of him and make a dash for the street. Ochaco removed her gravity and launched herself forward as he reached the still-slightly-dazed Katsuki.

It was only a split second, but Katsuki experienced it all in a slow-motion level of detail. Lockdown darted past him just as Ochaco came flying overtop, and with arms outstretched the thief made contact with Katsuki’s back and Ochaco’s stomach.

Like magnets, the two heroes collided as Lockdown sprinted out of the alley and around the corner, leaving Katsuki to pull himself out of his rage-inducing stupor while a mortified Ochaco tried to pry herself off of his back.

A slew of curses flew from his mouth as he whirled around and tore down the alleyway in pursuit, all the while ignoring Ochaco’s shouts of protest as she tried to wrap her limbs around him instead of letting them flail through the air like a ridiculous waving inflatable. In her haste, she had forgotten to keep her pinkies from making contact with Katsuki’s chest, and without warning his gravity was stripped away. And of course— because everything had been going so smoothly already— it happened at the exact same moment that Katsuki had opted to propel them forward with an explosion. Without their gravity, the joined heroes rocketed through the air.

Wind screamed through their ears as they hurtled forward, narrowly missing a building, and Katsuki quickly tried to regain control of their trajectory through a series of maneuvered short bursts.

Once he no longer felt like he was careening towards his own death, he could revel in the utter exhilaration of cutting through the air like a human bullet. He let out a laugh as he caught a glimpse of Lockdown up ahead. A quick tap to her leg was all the signal Ochaco needed to release her quirk and give Katsuki back his more precise control of their flight path. The pick-pocket didn’t have a chance to so much as look back before he was slammed forward and knocked out cold.

In an instant, the pull of his quirk disappeared and the two rookies were once again independent bodies— though they would later claim a delay in the quirk’s release was the reason Ochaco seemed to cling to Katsuki for a few extra moments.

After police came to make the official arrest, the up-and-coming pros began making their way back to their assigned sector of the city. Less than a block was all it took before Katsuki, with cheeks ablaze and jaw clenched, made the suggestion that they fly the rest of the way.

“Just so we can practice it,” he clarified.

Ochaco smiled. “Yeah. I’d like that.”
