Work Text:
Eddie sat on his seat at school. He looked at the clock on the wall of the classroom. He was feeling impatient. He had something to do after school, something extremely important. 5 seconds left. He would be free. 5…2,1.
The school bell rang and the Losers all rushed out of class. Bill, Stanley, Ben, Beverly, Mike, Richie and Eddie all got on their bikes and rode down the roads of Derry. Eddie Kaspbrak wasn’t riding as fast as the others. He tried to catch up with Richie Tozier and the others. He pushed on the pedals and got to the same level as them all.
“I can’t believe school is already over for this year!” said Stan.
“Yeah, it went really fast.” said Ben.
“It doesn’t seem like it’s going fast when you’re in English class.” said Richie making the others laugh.
“This summer is going to be super fun.” said Mike.
“Y-y-yeah.” said Bill.
“We’re gonna hang out every day right?” asked Bev.
“Yeah. Maybe not everyday though…” said Eddie.
“Hey, Eddie, can I come round and see your mom?” asked Richie.
“Shut up Richie.” said Stan.
“Hum… actually guys I have to go somewhere.” said Eddie.
“Where?” asked Richie.
“Just… somewhere. I’ll see you guys later okay.”
“Oh, okay. Bye then.” said Richie, confused.
“Where is he going?” asked Stan.
“No idea.” said Bev.
Eddie pedalled as fast as he could and rode off to where we wanted to go. He looked behind him, making sure nobody had followed him. No, he was alone thankfully. He finally arrived to the place he wanted to go. He got off his bike and let it fall down to the grassy ground. He walked over to the planks of wood that people around Derry most commonly referred to as the “kissing bridge”. He opened his backpack and he pulled out an object. It was a pocket knife. He looked around at all the other things that were carved into the wood. Did he have to do this? He sure wanted to. People had carved initials, names, messages all over the wood. Some things were impossible to read. He came closer and kneeled down. He unfolded the knife. He was ready to do this. He stabbed to wood and formed the letter of the first name of his friend. Around it, he carved the outline of the shape of a heart.
There.
That wasn’t so difficult. He’d done it. R. He looked at the letter. If ever someone saw this, they wouldn’t know Eddie had done it. It could be anyone. Some people had carved the initials of them and their crush or partner or even their full name. Someone had written “Amber” with a heart. There were many initials such as B+N or H+G. Eddie looked up. R+E. What? That could work for Richie+Eddie… It obviously didn’t mean that. He had not carved that and Richie certainly hadn’t. It was just a coincidence. One big coincidence. Eddie smiled as he looked again at what he’d carved. He bit his bottom lip. Maybe he should’ve written his whole name. Richie. But R was perfect. It meant Richie and that’s what was important to Eddie.
