Work Text:
Kate blinks her eyes tiredly as she slowly wakes up, realizing that Yelena is curled up against her, her head touching Kate’s collar bone. She smiles softly, making sure not to move so as to not wake the blonde snuggling into her. Kate carefully turns her head, the alarm clock reads 2:40 am. Sighing she looks at the ceiling, willing herself to go back to sleep, but at the same time she doesn’t want this moment to end. Kate knows that when she wakes up, more than likely Yelena won't be there.
Yelena has been taking more missions lately, and while Kate misses her, she will never tell her that. She is scared that if she voices those feelings out loud, she won't see Yelena again. To Kate, Yelena is home, and without her, life isn't as bright. This she has told her deadly friend, by accident, and that ended with Yelena disappearing for two months. Nothing has been talked about since, and Kate understands that Yelena needs time. As Kate shifts slightly, Yelena tightens her grasp, mumbling something she can’t really hear. Kate stops fighting sleep as her eyes drift shut, feeling Yelena snuggle closer to her.
She wakes up to an empty bed, even though she knew it was going to happen, it still hurts. Kate sighs, sitting up slowly before looking around. There is no sign that Yelena was even there to begin with. The sun is just starting to rise, meaning Yelena probably left soon after she fell back to sleep. Kate watches the sun rise, the oranges fading slowly into blue, tears forming in her eyes. It hurts every time Yelena leaves without saying a word, and the sunrise just reminds her of every other time it's happened.
Kate stays in bed for another hour before getting up. Lucky perks up from his bed before getting up and trotting over to her, his tail wagging behind him. She bends down to his level and hugs him, grateful that she has him with her. “Hey boy, how about me and you go for a run, how does that sound?” Kate says into his soft fur. She gets up as Lucky runs down the stairs towards the door.
One month time skip -
Kate is sitting at a bar sipping a white russian, thinking about Yelena once again. She hasn't gotten a lot of sleep this month, between being CEO of her family’s company, patrol, and Yelena being gone, it's been hard to not overthink. Kate has been a frequent in this bar for two weeks now, drowning her worries away almost every night. “Can I have another please, and keep them coming,” she says to the bartender. They nod wordlessly, not caring as long as they get paid. Kate sighs, swirling the last sip of her drink before gulping it down.
Suddenly she sees a flash of yellow in her peripheral vision, she turns quickly, only to see a random blonde looking at her. Kate frowns and turns back around, grabbing her new drink. She wishes Yelena would just come back already, or at least text her and let her know she is okay. “Hey there, can I buy you a drink?” Kate turns and sees the blonde that she had mistaken for her friend. “Um, I was actually thinking about heading out soon,” she says sheepishly, rubbing her hand against the nape of her neck. The blonde looks Kate up and down before offering, “Well maybe I can join you? Make your night a little more fun.” she winks at Kate and bites her lip.
“Uh…” Kate says dumbly, “I don’t know, I'm kind of into someone else.” The blonde frowns, “Well that's too bad, hope that works itself out for you,” she says as she turns away and waves at Kate. She sighs and gets up and leaves. As she starts walking home someone starts to follow her, Kate immediately notices and starts walking quicker, but not enough to make it obvious. Next thing she knows she is getting jumped, fighting instincts kick in and she quickly blocks the attack. The masked figure continues to try to overpower Kate without success, but she starts to get tired seeing as she was drunk.
Kate is suddenly looking at the sky, the stars above that are noticeable, twinkling above her, her attacker pinning her to the ground and holding a knife to her throat. Kate starts to feel a laugh escape her, which quickly turns into a cry. She closes her eyes, ready for the end, when she feels the weight of the other person vanish from on top of her. She hears a crack and a thud. Kate quickly sits up and opens her eyes and sees her attacker about five feet away from her slumped against the wall. “Kate Bishop, I thought you were better fighter than that, maybe I was wrong.” Kate whips her head to the direction of the voice, her eyes starting to water.
Yelena was standing above her, holding a hand out to help her out. “You're here! You’re actually real?” Kate whispers as she takes Yelena’s hand and gets pulled up. The blonde grins and looks up into Kate’s eyes. “Yes Kate Bishop, I am real. Now tell me, why were you laying on the ground?” Kate just sits there and takes Yelena in silently. “Lena,” she says softly, as tears start to flow. Yelena visibly softens and pulls the taller girl into a hug. “Come now Kate Bishop, let's go home and eat some macaroni, I'll make it.” she says, trying to lighten the mood. Kate nods and follows Yelena home, both of their hands intertwined.
