The Misadventures of Fumikage Tokoyami

Summary:

When Shouto Todoroki told his friend and classmate, Fumikage Tokoyami to keep Hawks away from his dad, he failed to specify which one. Follow Fumikage as he desperately tries to keep Hawks away from Endeavor during his internship.

Chapter 1: THE REQUEST

Chapter Text

Fumikage was nervous, and Dark Shadow was doing their best to keep him calm. He didn’t know what made Todoroki approach him like this, they hadn’t really spoken since the start of the year, but whatever it was…it was serious. One look at his classmate’s face told him that whatever conversation they were about to have, Todoroki was not going to be joking around.

“Fumi…the candycane boy looks scary.” Dark Shadow whispered into his ear tearfully, careful to keep their voice quiet so that Todoroki couldn’t hear.

The other boy had his eyes narrowed as he stared Fumikage down.

“I heard that you’re interning with Hawks .” He spat the name as if it were a curse. Did he have something against the winged hero? Fumikage decided to ask.

“Is there something wrong with my choice?” Fumikage knew that the cold look his classmate sent him wasn’t directed towards him, not really, but it still chilled him to the bone. Dark Shadow reacted to his emotions by curling themself around him. A form of a hug. Fumikage appreciated it.

“There’s no problem with it.” Fumikage doubted that. If Todoroki’s quirk was laser eyes, Fumikage would’ve been dead from their first interaction. Something was angering Todoroki and Hawks had something to do with it.

“Fumi, he’s scary! Hawks might die!” Evidently, Dark Shadow thought the same. As if Dark Shadow’s words shocked him out of his anger-filled trance, Todoroki began to explain what he wanted out of Fumikage as both he and Dark Shadow listened in shock.

—-------
“I want you to keep Hawks away from my dad.” Shouto began. He knew he had to do this. His dad’s happiness was on the line after all!

“Hawks is a good-for-nothing, stupid playboy, oversized chicken man. He’s not good for anything but breaking hearts.” Shouto thought that his description of the bastard was enough for Tokoyami to make the connection. It was obvious that his classmate didn’t understand. Sadly, he must be another one of the bastard’s disillusioned fans. Shouto would have to tell him the truth.

“Hawks doesn’t deserve his place as the No. 3 Hero.” Tokoyami seemed incensed at his words.

“Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean you get to say that he doesn’t deserve to be a hero-”

“No.” Shouto wouldn’t let his classmate keep believing in the heart-breaking bastard. He needed to know just who he was interning with.

“You need to know. Hawks isn’t who he says he is.” That got Tokoyami’s attention.

“What do you mean?” And thus, Shouto began to regale his classmate on how Hawks used and abused his dad, all for his stupid rank, without even apologising for his actions.

—-------
Fumikage was HORRIFIED at what he was hearing.

“-according to my big brother, when my dad was younger, he was tricked by Hawks into getting into a romantic relationship with him.” What?! Fumikage felt like screaming. It was like his entire world had been flipped upside-down. What Todoroki had told him had been the equivalent of if the other boy had taken a sledgehammer and decided to attack his common sense with it.

Hawks was a hero. He was the fastest hero to make top 10, and then top 3 on the hero rankings. He was a good guy. He helped whoever needed him. But…according to Todoroki, he’d only risen that fast because of NEPOTISM?!

“Tenko told us he caught dad crying a few times whenever the bastard was on the news when he was younger. Not sure about now though, but that doesn’t erase the heartbreak dad felt.” NOW TODOROKI WAS TELLING HIM THAT ENDEAVOR. THE NO. 2 HERO, ENDEAVOR HAD CRIED OVER HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HAWKS?! In his mental freak out, Fumikage didn’t get the chance to ask Todoroki just who Tenko was, but that wasn’t important.

“Apparently, dad and Hawks were really in love, or that’s what dad thought when Hawks stabbed him in the back and used him to further his position in hero society before leaving him.” Fumikage felt sick. Was this the true face of the hero everyone looked up to? Was this the reason why he could advance so quickly in the hero rankings? If so, what else had he done to get his position? If he’d knowingly manipulated and used the No. 2 Hero to get what he wanted, what could he have done that had remained secret? The only reason Fumikage knew about his personality now, was because Endeavor was powerful and his son had told Fumikage. Who else was hurt by Hawks? Would Fumikage ever really know? Then came  a question that Fumikage didn’t want to ask. Endeavor was married. If he’d been in a relationship with Hawks…what about his wife?

Tentatively, Fumikage asked Todoroki about his mother.

“Todoroki…you’ve given me a lot to think about.” Fumikage didn’t know how to broach the subject, but he’d have to.

“So…how are your parents doing then?” Fumikage hoped that his question wouldn’t be taken too offensively, and thankfully, Todoroki didn’t seem bothered by the question.

“They’re doing well. Mother is currently in marriage counselling with father. Dad is doing ok.” Fumikage let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Thank god. He didn’t want to think about Endeavor’s potential messy divorce because of his future mentor. He just didn’t want to picture it.

It took a little while for him to gather his thoughts, but when he did, he caught the tail-end of Todoroki’s request.

“I need you to keep Hawks away from my dad during the internships. I don’t want him anywhere near my dad. Can you promise me you’ll keep Hawks away?” Fumikage couldn’t say no. Not to the earnest eyes that stared at him, not after what he’d just heard. Numbly, Fumikage nodded his acceptance as a wide smile broke onto Todoroki’s face.

“Thank you.” He bowed in gratitude before leaving the room.

Fumikage was now alone with his thoughts and Dark Shadow.

“That was messy. We’re in trouble now.” Dark Shadow muttered and Fumikage agreed. Just what had he gotten himself dragged into?

Furthermore…Hawks was not what he had imagined. Instead of the confident hero that he pictured, now whenever he thought of the hero, all he could think of was the story that Todoroki told him. Hawks had clawed his way to the top using deception and lies. Tokoyami couldn’t agree with that, no matter how great of a hero Hawks was whilst on duty. He should’ve gained his position with his own merit. Not off the back of a man who’d done it before.

Fumikage regretted choosing a hero that got his start like this, but he couldn’t change it now. The least he could do was fulfill his classmate’s wishes and keep the golddigger away from his poor father.

Chapter 2: INTERNSHIP DAY 1

Chapter Text

On the first day of internships, Fumikage boarded the train and was taken to Kyushu. He would be the only one from class 1A to travel this far for their internship. Belatedly, he wished he had chosen somewhere closer…with a more honest hero. No matter how quickly Hawks rose to the top, it didn’t erase the methods he used. Fumikage was disgusted by the hero, and to think he had looked up to the man.

Fumikage knew that people with the brightest smiles could still hide the darkest secrets, but this was a whole different banquet of chaos.

When Todoroki had cornered him and warned him about Hawks, he’d logically assumed that the dual-coloured boy was just incensed that Hawks kept beating his siblings in the hero ranks year after year. It was the only explanation that made sense of his classmate’s animosity towards the No. 3 Hero. What Fumikage had heard however had shocked him to his core.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t match the image of the pro hero he’d looked up to, to the man that Todoroki had described. Frankly speaking, the two people were night and day.

“Fumi! Fumi! We’re here!” Dark Shadow tugged at him as Fumikage let his quirk lead him out of the train. They walked the rest of the way to Hawks’ Agency.

The building the No. 3 Hero made his base of operations was massive. A skyscraper that shot up to the sky, easily towering over the rest of the city. It was a symbol of protection. A symbol of a hero’s pride and greed.

It was disgusting.

When Fumikage finally reached the front doors of the agency, he was met by a hero that he’d almost assumed to be Hawks if it weren’t for how young the hero looked and acted. The hero had the same tustled blonde hair that the No. 3 Hero was known for and the iconic red wings and markings around his eyes, but from the way he stood and acted-this wasn’t the No. 3 Hero. He didn’t have the same weariness that Fumikage knew Hawks hid.

“Hey, Birdman!” The hero smiled at him as Fumikage bristled. He WAS NOT a “Birdman”.

“My name is Fumikage Tokoyami, and I am here for my internship.” He introduced as Not-Hawks grabbed hold of him.

“Hey! Let Fumi go-” They were both pulled into the hero’s arms. Fumikage didn’t have enough time to do much more than hold on for dear life as they rocketed from the ground.

“This is the fastest way!” The hero’s cheerful voice practically chirped as Fumikage did his best to not fall and become a pancake on the sidewalk.

They burst through a window on the top floor and the hero dropped Fumikage to the floor. He had never felt so good to be on solid ground .

“Falcon. You should be more careful with my intern.” And that was when Fumikage finally met the No. 3 Hero, Hawks.

When he saw the hero he had looked up to in person, Fumikage was reminded why he had idolised Hawks in the first place. Behind his cheerful and confident persona he upheld for the public, there was a weary look in his eyes. It spoke of years of suffering and pain, carefully hidden behind a meticulously constructed wall. As a child, Fumikage had found Hawks to be the hero he could relate with the most. They were both beings tormented by the darkness in their soul. Hawks was the representation Fumikage needed in society.

Looking at the hero now, Fumikage could still see the hero that he had once adored. The hero that unconsciously, he still looked up to.

“Hello, Tsukuyomi.” The hero smiled.

“Welcome to Hawks’ Hero Agency.”

—-------
Keigo was giddy when he saw his ex-intern. Tokoyami was exactly as he’d remembered him, all sharp edges and even sharper eyes that stared at him. Though Keigo would note that his eyes were harsher than in the last timeline . His cute little sidekick had once again chosen to intern with him-not that Keigo doubted that would happen, but it was nice to see a familiar face. Tokoyami had saved him from certain death in the last timeline. After he betrayed Dabi. He’d never gotten the chance to repay the favour.

“Hello, Tsukuyomi.” Keigo smiled. He would help Tokoyami grow into an even greater hero than before. He owed it to him.

“I see you’ve met my little brother. This is Arata-” Keigo was cut off by aforementioned little brother.

“I’m Arata! This guy’s much cooler little brother!” A teasing smile was thrown his way, and Keigo felt a surge of happiness, as well as grief, overtake him. His smile grew a little strained before he was able to push the emotions back down; he hoped no one noticed.

Arata was everything he could have been, had he been looked after properly. Watching Arata grow was like watching an ember of what he used to be. Arata would have the chance he didn’t, and Keigo was happy to end the vicious cycle the HPSC placed him in before it could begin once again. He didn’t know what would’ve happened had he not rescued his younger self. Keigo wasn’t blind to the fact that this world mirrored his past, but there were key differences that reminded him that the future wasn’t set in stone, that maybe had he left Arata alone, he would have still been fine . In this reality, as he had dubbed it, the people were different, even though they shared some similarities. People who hadn’t existed before blended seamlessly into the mechanisms of this alternate society, new heroes that would have made a huge difference in Keigo’s past patrolled the streets maintaining peace, giving Keigo whiplash every time he looked at them. Yes, it wasn’t difficult for Keigo to remember that this wasn’t his old life, but in the moments where he felt the smallest; the most vulnerable, and pathetic, there would be a voice telling him that he was doomed to relive his past mistakes and condemn Arata to a similar fate. Sometimes, the similarities were too much.

Plastering an overenthusiastic smile on his face, Keigo leaned across his desk to gaze at Tokoyami once more. His intern was staring at Arata as his little brother continued to introduce himself.

“I’m the Pro Hero Falcon! And I’m going to beat Hawks and become the next No. 3 Hero!” Keigo smiled more genuinely as he took his little brother into his arms and proceeded to muss up his hair.

“Try keeping your spot as the No. 9 Hero before you make any bold claims ok kid?” Arata weakly hit at his arms as Keigo chuckled. He knew that Arata could get out at any point if he really wanted to, but neither wanted to hurt the other.

“Let go of me you annoying big bird!” Arata kept struggling in his hold as Keigo smirked.

“If I’m a big bird, does that make you a little bird? Watch out not to throw stones in glass houses Falcon .” Keigo made a point to use Arata’s hero name to remind his little brother of his own status as a winged hero. He could feel Arata slouch and he knew that the kid would most definitely be pouting. Cute .

Keigo kept messing with Arata’s hair before a well placed hit knocked the breath out of him. It wouldn’t cause any more damage other than a light bruise, but it was enough to make him let go.

That didn’t faze Keigo though as he turned to face his little brother, who tried to look calm. It would have maybe fooled a reporter or fan, but Keigo had raised the boy. The pink tinge to his neck and ears was obvious to him.

“Arata, please show Tokoyami here to his room for the internship.” Then, he turned to his intern.

“Tokoyami, or should I say Tsukuyomi?” When he received no reply, Keigo continued.

“Tokoyami then, get ready to go on patrol in an hour.”

—-------
Interning with Hawks was nothing like Fumikage could have imagined. The man was attentive and clearly intended to help him as much as possible, but that wasn’t the problem. Now that he was at the agency, Fumikage’s promise to Todoroki weighed heavy on him. Hawks was nice, but how much of that “nice guy” act was merely an act?

Fumikage didn’t know. Hawks was too good at hiding his true face. He doubted even Falcon knew the true extent of Hawks’ past or behaviour, if he suspected at all.

As Fumikage was lead away to his room, he couldn’t help but recount the interaction he’d just had with Hawks. The man was hiding something.

—-------
Exactly one hour after letting Tokoyami rest in his room, Keigo met the teenager in his office.

“It’s time to go on patrol.”

Waiting for his intern to follow him, Keigo stood at the elevator as the boy took a moment to realise that Keigo wasn’t going to go through the window like his little brother. Keigo wouldn’t do that. Not again. And not to Tokoyami. He’d teach his intern properly this time

“Are you not going to fly out?” Tokoyami’s quirk blurted out before the boy slapped a hand over their beak/mouth/where Keigo thinks is the shadow’s mouth.

“Sorry, Hawks. My quirk can be talkative sometimes.” Tokoyami apologised as Keigo waived away the boy’s apologies.

“It’s fine. It’s fine. I usually go through the window, so that’s a fair question-”

“Yeah! So why aren’t you going through the window?” The quirk chirped again, somehow getting free from Tokoyami’s grasp.

Keigo cocked his head to the side, a teasing grin on his face as he addressed both boy and quirk.

“Well, my cute little intern can’t fly now can he?”

“Nope!”

“And there, you have your answer!” For a brief moment, there was a stunned look on Tokoyami’s face, and had Keigo not been trained extensively to pick up on those things, he might not have noticed it.

“But, that doesn’t stop you from doing that to your sidekicks…” He heard the boy mumble into his cloak. Keigo almost frowned at that. Hey! He wasn’t that bad! His sidekicks knew what they signed up for when they decided to join the agency of a WINGED hero!

“They’re fully trained pros, youre just a student.” Keigo answered, startling the kid. Enough time’s been wasted. Keigo wanted to go outside. Gesturing towards the elevator, he ushered the intern in before pressing the button for the ground floor. Exiting the building this way wasn’t nearly as satisfying as the open air by his window, but he had a kid to teach.

In their five minute elevator ride to the ground, Keigo let himself be drawn into mindless chatter to fill the silence. He spoke about many different topics, Dark Shadow filling in some of the conversation when Tokoyami didn’t want to speak.

“You were Fumi’s role model growing up!” Dark Shadow revealed eagerly as Keigo chuckled. The boy in question was glowering at both his quirk and mentor as he hid himself in his cloak, which in turn only made Dark Shadow more bold.

“Who’s your favourite hero Hawks?!” The quirk screeched as Keigo beamed.

“Endeavor’s my favourite hero! I think he’s amazing!” Keigo smiled at the shocked look on Tokoyami’s face, but couldn’t comment on it before the elevator dinged. They were on the ground floor.

—-------
When Hawks revealed who his favourite hero was, Fumikage was hit with a feeling of disgust .  He’d almost forgotten who he was looking at; someone who would cheat and lie their way to the top. Hawks was too good at making everything seem fine. Like he was the good guy . Had Fumikage not known about what the man had done, he would have been one of those tricked by him.

He was ashamed of himself for forgetting his promise to his class president.

“I’m planning on having us join Endeavor on his patrol today! You need to get used to having a lot of light around you!” Hawks declared, and Fumikage froze for a moment. Patrol? With Endeavor ? Utter disgust curled in his gut as Fumikage bit back the words he wanted to scream at Hawks.

Hadn’t he tormented Endeavor enough?! Fumikage was saved from reacting by Falcon, who was stood nearby.

“Or…we could patrol with the Fire Bird Agency?” Fumikage was too relieved at the excuse presented before him to question the yearning in the hero’s gaze, or the way he stared beseechingly into his mentor’s eyes. If he did, he would have noticed that Falcon had a hidden reason (though not to his big brother), why he would want to patrol with someone other than Endeavor. But Fumikage didn’t. He was too happy that he wouldn’t need to come up with an excuse for Hawks to avoid Endeavor.

“I would also like to learn from the Fire Bird Agency.” Fumikage voiced to his mentor in an attempt to sway his mind. Falcon shot him a grateful look before they both turned to look at Hawks.

“Fumi could learn more from more heroes! And the Fire Bird Agency has more heroes!” Even Dark Shadow joined in, and Fumikage would make sure to thank his quirk later when Hawks was not staring them all down.

“But working with Endeavor would still provide a great experience for Tsukuyomi-” Fumikage’s blood ran cold.

“I also haven’t seen him in a while. I want to check in with him.” Anger seeped into his bones and Fumikage could feel himself prepare to attack his mentor. Someone who had clearly hurt Endeavor before (if what Todoroki said was true, but Fumikage didn’t doubt it), and was willing to do it again.

“I’ll buy you fried chicken from that famous cafe that you’re usually too busy to go to.” Falcon quipped just before Fumikage could follow through with his plan. (All he needed to do was wait for Hawks to look away.)

“Deal.” Fumikage could only blink in surprise as Hawks AGREED to work with the Fire Bird Agency for today. IT WAS THAT EASY?! Still rounding from the ease in which Falcon secured Hawks’ attention, Fumikage didn’t even acknowledge when Todoroki gave him a nod in thanks when they saw each other later in the day.

All he could think about was just how close, he was to breaking his promise to Todoroki. If not for Falcon, Hawks would be with Endeavor right now…

He had to do better. And he will do better. It was too close of a call. He’d have to work harder.
