Work Text:
Robin woke up at one in the morning and decided he needed a drink. He quietly opened the door, not wanting to wake Cyborg, Beast Boy or Starfire, and not wanting to attract the attention of the ever-awake Raven. When he was walking down the hall however he noticed that there were noises coming from Star's room.
He knocked on the door and heard it go quiet.
"Star? You okay? I could hear you." Robin called out.
"I'm asleep." Her voice called back.
"Can I come in?" Robin asked. He was worried now.
"I don't know, I'm asleep." Star said again.
Robin was getting more worried now and decided to go in despite the unclear answer.
He saw Star sitting up teary eyed on her bed holding onto as many stuffed animals as her arms would hold. Her knees were drawn to her chest and she was sniffling as if she had just been crying.
"Hey, what's wrong Star?" Robin asked softly as he went to sit on the bed beside her.
"Nothing." Her voice was shaky. "Nothing important."
"Did you have a bad dream?" He asked. It was the only thing that would make sense.
She nodded.
"What was it about?" Robin reached out and put his arm around her, an act she normally didn't allow but tonight she looked like she needed comfort.
"My home planet." She said quietly. "And Blackfire."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Robin asked.
She shook her head.
"That's okay. Do you want to try to go back to sleep?"
"Can't." She frowned.
"Why?" He asked.
"I can never sleep after the dreams." She whispered as if whatever haunted her dreams would come get her if she spoke too loud.
Robin thought for a second.
"I can show you how, if you want?" He blushed as he said this.
"You have bad dreams?" Starfire looked at him surprised.
"Yeah, not as much as I used to. I had one every night when Mom and Dad died." Robin admitted as he looked at his lap. He didn't like to talk about his parents deaths.
"Can you help me sleep, Robin?" Starfire asked softly.
"Yeah." Robin smiled a little. "Lie down."
He and Star lay down, Robin the big spoon with his arms around Star and Starfire the little spoon holding onto his hands.
"And then what?" She asked in a whisper.
"Close your eyes."
She did.
"Think about good things. Like cats or your teddy bears or..." Robin ran out of good things.
"Or like you being here helping me?" Starfire suggested.
Robin smiled and blushed. "Yeah... If that's what you think is good."
"I do."
Starfire quickly fell asleep in Robins arms much to his delight. He smiled and tried not to sneeze with her hair tickling his face.
When they woke up the next morning they were both happy. Starfire turned around to face Robin, who was still asleep, and smiled.
"Thank you Robin." She whispered.
Robin smiled in his sleep.
And from then on every time Starfire had a bad dream she went straight to Robin's room and they lay together. And then there were no bad dreams.
