Work Text:
Kronii loves the rain.
It’s calming. It’s not always the brightest thing, and there’s always some metaphor for what comes after it, but her friends have taught her to enjoy things while they last.
Kronii enjoys the way Sana always carries the biggest umbrella, making sure none of them gets wet. She enjoys the way Bae likes to run off and splash in muddles, making sure Sana’s efforts are in vain. She likes the cute little raincoats that Mumei goes out in, like a bright yellow marker on a dark chalkboard, it’s gonna leave its mark forever.
But most of all, she wants to drown in the soft smiles that Fauna will throw her way.
Kronii looks over at their friends, umbrella abandoned in a puddle as the trio chases each other around. She takes another look in the other direction, and walks away, towards the more exciting scene.
Yet, instead of joining them, she stops early, and bends down to pick up the umbrella. With a little huff, she shakes it around, water droplets flying off until she’s satisfied, and holds it up to block off the pitter-patter of the rain.
Then, with a little spirit in her step, she turns back around, and holds up the umbrella.
Fauna blinks, noticing the rain not hitting her head anymore, instead replaced with the muffled sound of bouncing off of a fabric. She looks up, and smiles when she realizes it’s Kronii. What she doesn’t realize, however, is the reddening cheeks that tingle with warmth against the cold air.
Kronii crouches down, making sure to keep Fauna shielded from the rain as she leans in to inspect what Fauna had been hovering over.
The girl moves her hands out of the way, to reveal a small kitten she was shielding from the rain.
“Must’ve gotten caught in the rain.” Fauna whispers, picking up the kitten and placing it in her arms.
“Yeah.” Kronii’s eyes follow the kitten, before moving up to Fauna’s tiny smile at the way the kitten leans into her touch.
“Precious little thing…”
Kronii’s eyelashes flutter and her mouth goes dry. “Yeah.”
A little laugh snaps her out of her gaze, Fauna’s laugh always managing to bring her back. “Kronii, you’re looking at me.”
“Oh, I-” Her voice cracks. “S-sorry.”
“Don’t be.” Fauna says with a slight giggle embedded into her words. She looks back down at the kitten, rubbing its forehead with her thumb.
“She’s cute.” Kronii says, referring to the cat and unsure of why she needed to clarify that to herself.
Fauna looks up, the sun coming out through her golden eyes. “Just like you.”
Kronii decides she’s no longer cold.
“Do we have to take a walk right now?” Kronii asks, carrying the umbrella with an arm that Fauna has linked herself onto.
“It’s nice.” Fauna responds. “Besides, you can’t hide away just because it’s a little stormy.”
Kronii scoffs. “Is that a challenge?”
A playful smack to her arm has the both of them chuckling. “Don’t be like that!” Fauna scolds, despite her voice sounding entirely too amused.
“Right, right, sorry. Positive thoughts only.”
There’s a beat of wordless ambiance, their shoes splashing in the water from the rain that falls around them. Then, Fauna speaks up with a tighter grip on Kronii’s arm.
“Did you not want to be out with me?” She whispers.
Kronii stops in her tracks. “Of course I do- why would you think I wouldn’t want to??”
Fauna continues facing forward, away from the other girl. “I just- I’m sorry. I can tell you’re awkward when it’s just the two of us, but I wanted to go out for a walk anyways and dragged you along-”
“I came because I wanted to be with you, Fauna.”
The girl stops. Another hand comes up to her side to turn her around, but she keeps her gaze downcast, hiding from the taller girl behind her hair. “I’m sorry that it’s just us then…”
A little chuckle comes from above. “Not your fault everyone else got sick from playing in the puddles.”
Fauna looks up, biting her inner cheek before whispering in a tiny voice. “How come you didn’t?”
“Well, gee, next time I’ll do my best to get a fever, yeah?”
The green-haired girl’s cheeks flush. “That’s not what I meant!”
Another soft laugh. “I know, I know.” Kronii uses her free arm to pull Fauna in for a hug, sharing the warmth in the cold air that surrounds them. “What if I told you that I like it when it’s just us.” She mumbles into green hair.
Fauna stiffens, her hands moving to sneak into Kronii’s jacket subconsciously, searching for just an extra bit of warmth. “Kronii…?”
“I mean,” She can feel the hand on her back pull her closer by just an infinitesimal amount, yet impossible to ignore by Fauna. “Not like I don’t like everyone else, I just really like you.”
They both flinch as soon as the words escape Kronii’s mouth.
“Uh! I mean-!” She bites her tongue when Fauna looks up at her, hope in her eyes brighter than the stars that shine in the sky. Then, hope disappears, and the umbrella falls into a puddle as time freezes.
Kronii’s eyes are wide open, but soon they close as well as she leans in to reciprocate the kiss. Her now free hand moves to Fauna’s waist, pulling her in for more.
Fauna breaks off, falling back onto the heels of her feet from having pushed into the kiss from her tippy toes. She can’t keep the smile off of her face, the little laugh that escapes her mouth that was previously captured by Kronii.
“Now we’re definitely going to get sick.”
“It’s worth it.” Kronii mumbles as she cranes her neck downwards, catching Fauna for another kiss.
Kronii sits in bed, leaning against the wall as she looks out the window, watching the rain fall.
Her eyes flick over when the door opens, smiling as Fauna walks in, wearing comfortable pajamas and red cheeks. They’re not the warmest set of clothes, but they both know that Kronii will end up warming her up anyways.
She looks back outside the window, breath fogging up an area of glass. She almost wants to draw shapes into the vapor, but the bed shifting under another weight distracts her. She puts her arm out, and Fauna immediately leans into her side, allowing Kronii’s hand to move up and attach itself at her waist.
“Are you sure you’re not sick?” Fauna asks, bringing up her hand to brush a piece of Kronii’s hair behind her ear.
“I could never be sick of you.” Kronii smirks, moving to pull in Fauna closer, sharing her warmth through a tiny side hug.
“That’s not what I meant.” Her girlfriend (girlfriend!!!) giggles, resting her head on Fauna’s shoulder as they both return to looking outside. “You must really like the rain, huh?”
“I love the rain.” Kronii whispers. “It reminds me of you.”
