Work Text:

Kronii sighed, resting her cheek in her hand as she slouched forward onto the desk.

“What’s wrong?”  Fauna asked from her own bed across the room, leaning back against her headboard with a notebook in her hand.

“Do I really need to tell you?” Kronii grumbled.

Fauna tapped her pen against her chin. “Well, not really. But I can’t figure out why you’re bothered.”

Kronii moved her head up to glare at her roommate, who only gave a little giggle in response. “Because you’re a liar.”

The girl gives a dramatic gasp, dropping her pen to put her hand on her chest. “What?? Me?!” She laughs again as she gets up from her bed, setting her materials down on her desk as she pulls out her chair to sit next to Kronii. She leans in close, causing the taller girl to lean further away, keeping them parallel.

“Stay back! I don’t trust you.”

“Oh, but Kronii…” Fauna pouts. She brings her hand up to Kronii’s arm, dragging her finger up a tense muscle. “I’m not going to hurt you…” A little glint in her eyes. “Unless you like that, of course.”

Kronii tenses up, a strained noise escaping her throat as she suddenly jumps up, the chair squeaking against the hard floor.

Fauna’s eyes widened with mischief. “Ooh!”

“Quit it!” She yanks her arm away as Fauna reaches out, before sighing and sulking. A hand moves to her forehead, brushing her hair back as she surrenders. “Am I really that readable?”

“No, but it is a little embarrassing.”

Kronii looks up, and for the first time, she actually notices that Fauna’s cheeks have darkened. Not as much as hers of course, but… noticeable. She takes a seat on her bed, back against the headboard as she kicks the covers downwards.

“What is?” She gives in, asking for more.

Fauna seems to brighten up at the fact that Kronii was actually interested instead of building up another wall. She puts an elbow on the chair, resting her cheek on her arm.

“You think about me all the time.” She smirks.

“Wh-” Kronii sits up. “How do you know?!”

Fauna giggles at the blurted reaction. “I’m psychic.” She announces, nonchalantly.

Kronii stares at her, an eyebrow quirked as she leans back onto the headrest, crossing her arms. “Stop saying that. I told you that you’re a liar.”

“I’m not though.” The psychic gets up from her desk and sits at the edge of Kronii’s bed. She’s delighted as Kronii scooches over closer to the wall, not to get away, but to make room for Fauna. She puts her legs up and pulls the covers over their bottom halves, leaning against the headboard just a few inches away from Kronii.

“You are. Psychics aren’t real.” Kronii mumbles.

“I’m right here, Kronii.”

“Then prove it!” Kronii’s cheeks redden as she whips her head around, staring at Fauna with determination shining in her eyes. “What am I thinking about?”

Fauna blinks, then pulls the blanket up to cover her face. “Uuu, Kronii~”

“Hah! See?” Kronii turns back forward, sitting up with pride. “I told you-”

She’s cut off as her shoulder is suddenly pulled by a weight, and she leans into a soft pressure on her cheek. It’s quick and gentle, but it’s not meaningless. It’s warm and sweet, but Kronii freezes, brain unable to process the kiss.

Then, it hits her all at once. She turns her head, a hand going behind to grab the pillows behind them as support as she leans closer to Fauna, thoughts only about what the psychic had just done.

“Fauna?!”

The psychic leans further away, ears burning with embarrassment. “Don’t look at me like that! You’re the one who was thinking about it!”

“H-How did you-?!”

“I already told you…” Fauna muffles into the blanket, still adamant on hiding her face.

Kronii bites her lip, leaning back into the headboard. She finally realizes where her hand is and lets it drop to Fauna’s waist, slightly tugging on the psychic’s shirt. “...Fauna?”

She watches the blankets wrinkling under Fauna’s grip.

“Are you sure you want to…?”

She sits up to look at Kronii, who just gives her a furrowed expression. She already understands that she doesn’t need to say anything for Fauna to listen.

Yet, Fauna looks away, brushing her hands through a piece of hair that has fallen to her front. “Isn’t… isn’t it weird…?” Kronii tugs on her shirt again. “It’s… kind of like I’m invading your privacy…”

“You’re really worried about that now?” Kronii chuckles as she scoots closer to Fauna, who heats up at the feeling of their bodies pressed together just slightly.

“Well, now it’s serious.” Fauna’s fingers tighten around a strand, but another hand comes up to intertwine their fingers instead. She looks to her side, and notices Kronii looking down at their hands, feeling little massages on her palm and tracing the lines etched into her skin.

“Then, if you know how I feel… it just means I don’t have to hold back anymore… right?”

Fauna’s heart pounds against her chest. Sure, she might’ve acted like everything was fine, and maybe it was a little fun to play around, but anytime she’d reveal her… abilities… people just wanted to use her.

Yet, here was Kronii, who ended up accepting the truth, and with that, she continues to want Fauna, and Fauna knows, not because she can read minds, but because Kronii’s own heart speaks so loudly.

“On one condition…” Kronii whispers, eyes flickering between Fauna’s own, unsure of where to look, or perhaps looking for something else. Either way, Fauna can feel her insides twist, because this was it. She was wrong. Kronii did want to use her for something and- “You have to tell me what you’re thinking.”

Fauna opens her eyes, now realizing just how much she had tensed up. “What?” She blurts out.

Kronii chuckles, subconsciously playing with their hands as she mindlessly makes a map of their fingers. “I’m not a mind reader, believe it or not.” Fauna lets out a soft laugh at that. “So, you have to tell me what you’re thinking.”

“That’s it?”

“Yeah.” Kronii shrugs. “I mean, if I’m gonna bare my soul to you, I think it’s fair if you do the same.”

Fauna’s eyebrows furrow. “That’s… it??” She parrots. “No threat, no eavesdropping on other people, no headphones to drown out your voice- you just want me to-”

“Fauna.” Her voice interjects. “It’s not your fault you have to deal with it.”

She doesn’t realize she’s crying until Kronii finally lets go of her hands to wipe away a tear falling down the psychic’s cheek.

“If you’re telling the truth-”

“I am.”

“Then I’m going to believe you.” Kronii’s hands tighten around Fauna’s once again. “That is how much I like you.”

Fauna looks down at their hands, before leaning forward, resting her forehead on Kronii’s shoulder. “... Okay…”

“Okay…” Kronii sighs, using her thumbs to rub circles into Fauna’s palms. “What’re you thinking about?”

“How much I really want to kiss you again.”

“Oh.” Kronii blinks. “Neat. We match.”

Fauna blurts out in a tiny fit of laughter, head moving back up as her shoulders shake with giggles. She quiets down as Kronii moves forward, and smiles against Kronii’s own happy grin for a moment.

And for a moment, everything is perfect.

Then Kronii abruptly breaks it off.

“Wait… does this mean you’ve heard my thoughts this entire time?”

Fauna starts laughing once again. “You mean every time I’ve entered a room, and you’ve called me the most beautiful person you’ve ever seen? Because yes-”

“Gwak-” Kronii bites her tongue.

A few months ago, Fauna nervously walked around  as she entered the campus. Everyone’s voices are loud, most screaming with nerves and directions on where to go.

However, she focuses on a stranger’s mind, a stranger who has accidentally locked eyes with her.

“Shit, she caught me staring…” The stranger nervously gives a wave with their free hand, another one on her suitcase. “God, she’s so pretty… I think I could handle living here if it meant I’d see someone like her everyday… No, wait, not someone like her… just her. I should go up to her! No, wait, that’d be so weird- Am I still waving?!”

It’s honestly the best coincidence when they meet up later again, the stranger showing up with her suitcase at Fauna’s assigned dorm.

The thoughts come flooding into the room, and Fauna can feel her cheeks darken with the amount of compliments that are suddenly yet unknowingly sent her way.

Oh. Fauna thinks to herself. This will be eventful.

A few months later, Fauna makes her way to another class. Yet, a familiar voice catches her attention. She looks around for the source.

Oh my god, Fauna’s over there. Does she take this route? I should come here more often then. She’s so pretty, I love her so much, oh my god I wanna run over to her and just hug her and never let go- ah, she’s looking over here. Can she hear me now?

Fauna nods with a little giggle as she gives a wave. Kronii waves from where’s she standing, before the person she’s talking to taps on her shoulder, pulling her back into the conversation.

Though, the psychic can hear Kronii still not paying attention.

Fauna!! I love you!! I love you I love you I love you- Oh my god, I’d run over there right now if I could.

She rolls her eyes as she starts making her way towards Kronii. When she’s finally arrived, it seems like Kronii is still busy on screaming her thoughts that she’s surprised when a sudden weight on her shoulder pulls her down, and a little kiss is pecked onto her cheek.

“I love you too.” Fauna whispers into Kronii’s ear, before heading off once again, laughing at the way Kronii’s thoughts just become incoherent noises.
