Work Text:

“Steve, what uh- what are you doing here?” Bucky asks, blinking with confusion. It’s far too early for anyone to be at his house. Especially someone like Steve. “Not- Not that I’m not happy to see you.”

“I was just told some life-changing news. I didn’t know where else to go,” Steve tells him.

“You’re not dying, are you?” Bucky asks, suddenly seeming fully awake.

Steve frowns. “Why is it that you immediately went straight to death?”

“Look, I don’t know, man. It’s really early in the morning. I haven’t had coffee yet. You can’t blame me,” Bucky says. “Uh, I guess you can come inside and then we’ll talk about this life-changing news.”

“Thanks,” Steve mumbles before stepping inside the apartment. He turns, and watches as Bucky shuts the door. Then Bucky leads the way to the kitchen, where Bucky starts making his morning coffee.

“So, Steve…” Bucky begins as the coffee is being made. He turns to look at Steve, who’s now sitting at the kitchen counter. “Care to tell me why you’ve come to my place at-” He glances over at the clock, and his eyes widen when he sees that it’s not even ten in the morning. Bucky hadn’t realized that it was that early in the morning. “Christ, Steve. Nine thirty in the damn morning? I mean, honestly, what kind of life-changing news can you get at this time of day?”

Steve huffs. “I don’t fucking know! Sam thought it was a wonderful idea to tell me that he was expecting when we were making breakfast, because normal people eat breakfast at this time of day, Bucky,”

Bucky’s eyes widen with shock. “Holy shit. Sam’s pregnant?”

“Yeah, that was my exact reaction too,” Steve mumbles, crossing his arms as he looks down.

“He’s really expecting a baby?” Bucky asks, and he frowns slightly when Steve only nods his head yes. “Did you, I mean… Did you know that he could get pregnant? You never mentioned…”

“Yeah, I knew he could get pregnant. Sam told me when we first started dating each other that he was a Carrier,” Steve confirms, before letting out a sigh. “I mean, we weren’t exactly trying for a baby, Buck. I- I’m assuming Sam got pregnant from one of our drunken nights out.”

“It would make sense,” Bucky says, and he leans against the kitchen counter. “How do you feel?”

“I don’t know,” Steve admits, frowning. “That’s why I ran here. I shouldn’t have left like I did. Sam’s probably freaking out right now, but so am I. Like, how exactly do you react when your boyfriend of only two years tells you that he’s expecting a baby?” He looks up at Bucky. “What do I do?”

“You’re asking the wrong person for advice,” Bucky says, shaking his head. “Do you want a baby?”

“I mean, the thoughts of a baby are nice…” Steve says. “I never really thought that we’d be having a baby so soon in our relationship. I love Sam with my whole heart, and I think he’d make a great dad-”

“So would you Stevie,” Bucky interrupts him. “You’re great with kids. You did all those babysitting jobs when we were growing up. I was always jealous of how good you were with kids. They hated me.”

Steve snorts. “That’s because you glared at kids every time they went near you,”

“Kids are gross, and you can’t tell me otherwise,” Bucky argues.

“Well, you better learn how to love kids, because you’re going to be around mine and Sam’s kid whether you like it or not,” Steve says, and then his eyes widen. “Shit, I’m already thinking about the future!”

Bucky snorts, shaking his head. “Yeah, Stevie. That’s a good thing to do when you’re expecting a kid,”

“No, I- I mean… I never… I never imagined a kid being around before. But now that Sam’s pregnant…”

“I think you have your answer then, Stevie,” Bucky says.

Steve looks up at Bucky. “I’m still scared though,” he admits quietly.

“Well of course you’re going to be scared. Having a baby is life-changing, like you said. It’s a big deal,” Bucky says. “But it doesn’t have to mean a bad thing. A baby could mean something good.”

“Right. You’re right. I just… I have to talk to Sam. Shit. He’s probably mad at me for leaving!”

Bucky blinks, and he looks down when his phone suddenly goes off. He chuckles when he sees that it’s a text from Sam, asking if Steve is with him. He shows the text message to Steve. “Looks like you still have a chance, so you better get going while you still have it,” he says. “Talk to Sam. It’ll be fine.”

Steve lets out a sigh, before nodding. “You’re right-”

“I’m always right,”

“Okay, I’m leaving now,” Steve says, standing up from the stool he’d been sitting on. Steve looks over at Bucky. “Thanks Buck, and… sorry for knocking at your door at a ridiculous time.”

Bucky shrugs. “Doesn’t matter what time of day it is. You know I’m always here,” he says.

Steve can’t help the smile that forms on his face, because he knows Bucky is there.

Steve makes it back home twenty minutes later. He was expecting to be away from home longer, considering how he ran off after Sam announced that he was expecting a child.

Steve shuts the door behind him quietly. He bites his lip as he glances around the house. It’s quiet, is the first thing that Steve notices. Even for this early in the morning, their house is never this quiet.

Steve makes his way into the living room, and his heart stops when he sees Sam sitting on the couch, with his head hidden in his hands. Steve feels guilty for leaving Sam when he did. He can only imagine how Sam felt when he just left like that, without saying anything, not answering his text messages.

“S- Sam?”

Sam’s head snaps up as soon as he hears Steve’s voice, and he looks over. “Steve!” He stands up.

“Hi,” Steve says, and he slowly walks further into the living room. “A- Are you okay?”

Sam blinks. “Define okay,”

Steve lets out a sigh, and he walks closer to Sam. “I’m sorry,” he starts with. “I- I shouldn’t have run off like I did earlier. I- I was just shocked. I- I only went to Bucky’s, and Bucky usually sets me straight-”

Sam snorts. “There’s nothing straight about you, Steve,”

Steve scowls at Sam. “I’m trying to be serious!”

“Okay. I’m sorry. Continue to be serious,” Sam says, crossing his arms against his chest.

I’m sorry ,” Steve says, and takes a deep breath. “I- I had time to think about it. I think I’m okay with having a baby, if you want to keep it. Whatever you want, I’ll support you.”

Sam frowns. “I’m keeping the baby,” he says. “I’m not- no. I’m not… giving up the baby.”

“Okay,” Steve says, and he nods. “Then, I’m okay with that too. I just… I’m scared, okay? You’ll have to give me some time to get excited. I am excited but-”

“Steve, it’s okay ,” Sam says, and grabs a hold of Steve’s hands. “I know what you’re trying to say, and that makes me so happy to hear. I know this was all very sudden. I’m going to need some time too, but… as long as I have you, then I’ll be okay.” He holds onto Steve’s hands tightly.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Steve says before shaking his head, and pulls Sam in for a sweet kiss. “Okay? I’m going to be there. For you, and for the little peanut.”

“Peanut?” Sam asks, looking up at Steve with a grin.

“Yes. Peanut .”

“Just think. This time next year, we’ll be celebrating Christmas with a baby. A baby, Steve,”

“I know,” Steve breathes out, and he can’t help but smile. “I’m going to spoil the hell out of him.”

Sam groans. “Steve, please don’t-”

“Nope. I’ve already decided. I’m going to spoil him. Or her. Whoever they are, because they deserve it.”
