Work Text:

“Remy just saying that if SOMEONE had managed to remember to call the sitter on time then maybe we wouldn’t be trapped in a safe with a baby!”

“Are you seriously blaming me for this Gambit?!” Peter’s voice was a raised angry whisper to match Remy’s own as they tried to keep things quiet for the sleeping child.

“Remy calls it like he sees it,” Remy says as he evaluates their options, the safe was too small to try a direct kinetic blast without a risk of shrapnel hitting them and more importantly hitting the small boy that Spider-Man had in a baby carrier that was strapped to his chest. The boy couldn’t have been more than six months old, he had dark brown curly hair and was sleeping peacefully for now but he feared the moment the child would wake up and announce their presence to the owners of the safe they were currently trapped in.

Spider-Man had shown up at the X-Men’s Mansion a few hours ago with a plan and Remy had been stupid enough to go along with it when he should have slammed the door in his face and gone back to bed. However Spider-Man was a fast talker and smoother than Remy would have guessed because the wall crawler managed to finesse Remy into packing his gear and suiting up to follow him on a crazy last minute rescue mission. The Black Cat had been kidnapped and the kidnappers had contacted Spider-Man through Felicia’s communication device. They wanted the rare gem collection belonging to the biggest mob boss in New York, the Kingpin before they would release the Black Cat. Which is how Spider-Man ended up nearly breaking down the door of the pool house that Remy was currently shacked up in on the grounds of the X-Mansion and talked him into helping. Remy figured not only would he get the sweet bragging rights over the Black Cat but he might be able to slip a few gems away for himself. It was simply too tempting to pass up.

“You could have left him back with the X-Men,” Remy argues back as he moves around the safe, trying to find some trick or backdoor to let them free.

“Was Nightcrawler home?”

“No.”

“Then no.”

Remy throws up his hands, “Well then I guess we'll stay trapped here until the camera loop is found out all because I can’t blast our way out of here or it will hurt the baby!”

“I thought you were a master thief! You can’t even break out of a vault?!”

“Remy breaks INTO vaults not out of them! You shouldn’t have followed me in!” They are in each other’s faces now, angry whispering, “If you had stayed outside like I told you then you could have opened the door!”

“You think I’m stupid Gambit? You were gonna steal things for yourself too, and that isn’t according to the plan!”

“Stealing from another criminal!”

“This feels like I’m arguing with Felicia but the difference is I don’t want to kiss you.”

“Well Remy wouldn’t want to kiss you either!”

Suddenly an explosion sounds and the door to the vault creaks and groans before it falls flat, the pair had a few seconds of warning to leap back so it didn’t crush them.

“There better not be any kissing going on without me,” Felicia stands on the other side with a hand on her hip, a cocky expression on her face, and not a single hair out of place. As if she had simply strolled in off the catwalk to find the two bickering.

“Felicia?!” Peter leaps over the door to gather her in a hug being careful not to jostle the baby too much while Gambit’s mouth hangs open in surprise, “How did you escape?! I-”

Felicia kisses him before checking on their son, Walt, who had woken up from the sound of the explosion, he makes tiny happy noises when he sees her face and Felicia’s claws carefully patted tousled brown hair, before replying in an easy tone, “The kidnappers were bluffing. I was never caught, they managed to snag my communicator off me in the fight and I didn't realize until later, but by the time I managed to shake free of them and head back home you and Walt were gone, so I had to track you down to the X-Men where a smelly short man told me that you hauled off Gambit for this rescue mission, really Spider? Gambit? You could have done better with different help.”

“Hey!” Remy protested as he clambered over the large useless steel door, “I’m just as good a thief as you are Cherie, better even, and maybe should be thanking me for showing up at all.”

“Remy the day I need your help for a job is the day I hang up my claws,” She pats his cheek in a patronizing way and then turns back to Peter, “I barely managed to get into the security system and heard you two arguing in the vault, but we have a bigger problem-”

The sound of several footsteps came down the hall and turning the corner a small army of security guards, complete with guns and riot helmets, appeared.

“I see.” Peter says lightly as he tenses, mind automatically seeking out weak points and trying to calculate the best way to fight so that Walt wasn’t in danger.

“No. A bigger problem than that.” Felicia says as the steps of a larger man sounded, before the King Pin finally turned the corner. He glares at them before ordering his men to open fire.

“Merde.” Gambit curses while glaring at Spider-Man, “This is why we stick to the plan!” He throws a kinetically charged card before charging through with Peter and Felicia on his heels.

“Why didn’t you call a sitter?” Felicia asks as she engages in hand to hand combat with the first guard she comes to, breaking his nose in a swift punch before leaping aside.

“Oh you know, I thought the baby might need a night out-” Peter webs up the nozzles of the guns closest to him and then yanks them out of the guard's grip.

“It’s my son’s first heist and it’s not at all how I’ve planned it,” Felicia flips over another guard, “It was supposed to be a special occasion!”

“Surviving would feel like a really special occasion to me!” Peter takes to the ceiling as King Pin enters the fray, using his webs to blind him before snagging Felicia to join him on the ceiling. She activates the special pads in her suit to be able to crawl along with him as they make their way to the exit.

“You just gonna leave Remy here?!” The Mutant cries as he’s overwhelmed by a few guards.

Felicia and Peter look at each other, it was tempting to just ditch him but instead Peter shoots out another web and drags him out of the dog pile before depositing him on the cleared hallway floor, they drop down to make a run for it to the exit, up the stair well while they were pursued by the remaining guards. Peter is careful not to jostle Walt too much as they ascend. They hit ground level to find another horde of guards blocking their way. Peter grabs Felicia before she crosses into the line of fire and Remy jumps back with a surprised shout.

“The roof,” Felicia yells over the gunfire, and they go back into the stairwell only to find the first wave of guards coming after them, they go back into the lobby just as the elevator opens to reveal King Pin.

“You wouldn’t happen to have any cards left Gambit?” Felicia says as they take cover behind a pillar.

“Ah, no.” He says sheepishly.

“Well then I guess it’s my turn to tag in,” Peter unclipped the baby carrier from his chest and hands Walt off to Felicia who straps him to her back as Peter engages the larger man in battle. Felicia and Remy stay behind the tall marble pillar while she watches Peter fight.

Felicia turns and narrows her eyes at Remy, “You’re holding back something.”

“Got no more cards,” He checks the situation, “but I think we can make a run for it while they are distracted-”

Felicia sticks her hand into one of his coat pockets and pulls out a cache of gems, “Got nothing huh?”

Remy smiles, “I had to try Cherie, you would have done the same.”

“I would,” she purrs before storing away a sizeable amount in her suit, she hands back a few pieces of jewels to Remy, “But my man’s life is at stake and I need to get my son home so stop messing around or I will make you regret it Lebeau.”

He sighs as though he was being put out and takes the jewels, “I should be compensated for this.” He charges up the gems and tosses them, creating just enough of a path for them to take.

“You living is enough compensation,” Felicia shoots back as she follows him out before she presses two fingers into her mouth to let out a loud shrill whistle. Peter takes his cue to finish up his fight and join them. Remy gives them a small farewell salute as he takes to the streets to get away. Meanwhile Peter takes to the sky, clutching Felicia to his side, with baby Walt still strapped to her back. Walt gurgles happily as they make their grand escape.

“I leave you alone with the baby for one night-”

“I know, I know, but would you have left Walt behind if you thought there was a chance someone could come by and take him?” Peter looks her over, checking to make sure she and Walt were ok, “I couldn’t concentrate on saving you-”

“Again, didn't need saving.” She chides gently.

“And think about leaving him behind… but I should have waited for you.” Peter admits, he lands them on a roof, and sets her down.

“She touches the side of his masked face, “You were worried.”

“I was very worried.”

“You know I’ll always come home don’t you?” Felicia’s eyes track his.

“I know, but it’s dangerous, and things are different now that we’re parents,” Peter says looking at Walt who peeks up at him with brown eyes that matched his own, “I don’t want him growing up without you.”

“I would never leave you, or Walt,” Felicia swears as wraps her arms around Peter’s torso and pulls him in for a hug, “ever. I know it’s different now but I wasn’t in anything I couldn’t get out of. Trust me Spider, I’ll always come back.”

“I trust you Cat,” He holds his family close, “Just promise me that if you ever need backup then you take me with you, and I swear I’ll find a sitter.” Walt begins to fuss and they break apart, “Let’s go home.”

“Lead the way, Lover,” Felicia pulls out her grappling hook, “We’re right behind you.”
