Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Once upon a time, in the hidden heart of Berk, a dragon killing Viking chief named Stoick the vast lived in a beautiful home. Although he had everything his heart desired… a son, a wife, and riches beyond comprehension! The chief was selfish and unkind.“

“Stoick, it's time!” Trunk the barbaric called to the large man in the distance. The mysterious voice continued as the chief walked into the great hall, just as the first droplets began for the horrible storm that would soon arrive.

“He taxed the village to fill his castle with most beautiful objects—“

“Oui, maître” one of his guests spoke, holding a child named ‘Fishlegs’ in their arms.

“and his parties with the most beautiful people...”

“Oh, how divine!” Alexandra Hofferson chirped. Stoick rolled his eyes at the chatterbox.

“Glamour, music, and magic combine!” Responding, Oswald’s wife held two arms out, one for her daughter Heather, and the other for her son Dagur respectively.

“See the maidens so anxious to shine…” muttered another guest to the person next to them, a hand clasped over their mouth.

“Look for a sign that enhances chances, She'll be his special one!” Ruffnut’s mother half-shouted to Mr. Thorston, who rocked Ruffnut’s twin, Tuffnut.

Ah. Right.

Today was the celebration of a lifetime! Stoick’s newborn son ‘Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third’ was being indoctrinated into the Hooligan Tribe, the parents always used these to look for opportunities to marry their children off in the future.

“What a display…” Valka, his wife, breathed. “ What a breathtaking, thrilling array…” She looked to the crowd and then back to her beloved son, nervous. Listening to the chatter Valka heard the gossip stirring around the great hall.

Mutterings of:

“Every prince, every dog has his day” from a voice she recognized as Spitelout, ever the gossip talking nonsense to a babbling baby… ‘snotlout’ the woman noted, and moved on.

Murmurs of:

“And I'll sing with passion, gusto, fit to bust!”

With a side of:

“Oh, not a care in the world!”

Valka was VERY NERVOUS! She sat by the crib elegantly and fake, like the doll she was trained to be… before she was married off for 200 gold pieces. The mother was still very salty about that fact and despised the entire IDEA of marrying a child off, yet here she was. Silent and still.

An omnipotent voice began once more,

“Then one night, an unexpected intruder arrived at the great hall, seeking shelter from the bitter storm. As a gift, she offered the chief a single rose from her mouth... Repulsed by her dragon-like appearance, Stoick the Vast reacted by warning the dragon to fly away... She warned him not to be deceived by appearances... For beauty is found within. When he lost his patience and attacked the light-fury, the dragon’s outer appearance melted away to reveal a beautiful goddess. freyja!

The thunder stormed as the chief frantically knelt on one knee, fear in his eyes.

“Stoick begged for forgiveness, but it was too late. For she had seen that there was no love in his heart.“ the ominous voice spat. Clearly a little more than biased.

“As punishment, she cursed his son and his friends to a dragon-filled castle… six children went missing that night. Among them were Dagur, Heather, Fishlegs, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Hiccup Haddock. As days bled into years, the chief and his people had forgotten about the kids, for the enchantress had erased all memory of them from the minds of the people they loved. The last thing ever mentioned was when the chieftess of Berk made a ‘pact with the gods’ and disappeared to be with the children.” The voice began building in hope.

“But the rose she had offered that resided in the supposed ‘castle’ was truly an enchanted rose. If a Viking could learn to love a dragon and the son of the chief, the spell would be broken!” Its voice lowered in discouragement.

“If not, the children would be doomed to remain in the castle for the end of time! As the years passed, and Hiccup and his friends grew up with the dragons, he lost hope. For who could ever learn to love a beast?”
