Scotland is especially cold this year. Rose is colder than she can remember being in all of her four years. They can't afford to heat the upstairs, so Rose shivers as she moves along the corridor.
Instead of going to her own room, she opens the door to her brothers' bedroom. Ewan's side of the room is tidy, Logan's less so. That will make it harder to find her doll.
She knows Logan has hidden the doll somewhere. While Ewan adores his younger sister, Logan is jealous, sometimes cruel. He calls her 'carrot top', although Ewan assures her that red hair is beautiful. Ewan said he would help her look for the doll after tea, but she can't wait.
The window is open. Why would someone open it in this weather? Moving closer to the window, Rose sees that Logan has thrown the doll outside, onto the rooftop adjacent to the boys' bedroom.
Getting a stool, she manages to climb up onto the window ledge. With a triumphant smile, she pushes the window open further and reaches for the doll, inches away from her fingertips. Wriggling further onto the ledge, she leans out into the cold with her arm outstretched.
