Saving a life, but at what cost?

Summary:

Reginald Copperbottom waited on the deck to Dr V's boat, waiting for news on the life saving surgery to save his Right Hand Man.

And while some things go as planned, complications seem to rear their head for the two of them.

Work Text:

Reginald Copperbottom worriedly paced the deck of the boat that belonged to the cybernetics expert, Dr Vinschpinsilstien, very much exhausted but restless as the doctor was inside working on saving the life of his Right Hand Man.

While Reginald still couldn't believe his usurper, Henry Stickmin, took a chainsaw to his dear Right before tossing him off that walkway and into the many moving gears and engines below, he would deal with some type of revenge later, as Right was at death's door and Reginald was going to do whatever it took to keep that door closed.

Hours ticked by as Reginald kept pacing, occasionally trying to listen in to what Dr V was doing inside, only hearing various surgery tools and the consistent, steady beeping of Right's vital monitor.

That alone gave him hope that everything would be fine, that he would be reunited with his Right Hand Man soon enough.

And then the door to the side of the boat opened, Dr V coming outside ragged but a smile on her face.

"Right's surgery was a success, he is resting now but you may go to resting area with him.

Just know that he needed more cybernetics then initially thought, so don't be freaked out over the metal."

Reginald ran inside and into where this resting area was, seeing Right asleep and seeing all the cybernetics that were on him.

Half his left face, his right arm and legs were replaced by cold, metallic cybernetics, his red hair moustache cut shorter and long wavy hair almost shaved off on the right side of his head.

While the metal was a shock, Reginald didn't care, Right was alive and everything would be just fine.

Reginald sat down on a nearby chair before quickly falling asleep then and there, exhaustion taking hold and letting the former Toppat Leader get something that resembled rest.

---

The loud booming honk of a boat horn startled Reginald awake, looking over to see Right still sleeping soundly and Dr V in the corner with a notepad, jotting some things down.

Reginald got up from the chair and knelt down at Right's left side, grabbing his hand as gently as he could as he whispered.

"Righty, please wake up soon... please..."

There was silence at first, Reginald still holding on to Right's hand.

And then a moan came from Right, the now cyborg slowly sitting up as Reginald felt over joyed at the moment.

Reginald threw himself at Right for a hug, tears of joy streaming down his face.

And then Right pushed Reginald off him, confusion filling his face as he spoke.

"Just who in the hell are ya? And who in the hell am I?"

Reginald looked on with horror as he got up, trying his best to answer Right.

"You... you don't remember who you are, Right? Who I am and what we had?

Do you remember the Toppat Clan at all?"

Right just shook his head no, with Dr V only watching with curiosity.

Reginald turned to the doctor as he stomped towards her, anger rising as he yelled.

"You didn't tell me that this could happen! That Right could lose his memories!

Did you even try to make sure this wouldn't happen? Or is this some sick joke from you!"

Dr V just sighed as she casually grabbed Reginald's shirt, walking him out her boat to the deck as she spoke calmly.

"I told you when you brought him here that there could be side effects, Copperbottom. Memory loss is just one of the many things that could of happened.

I need you to stay out here while I give Right a full evaluation and see how much memory loss he had obtained and if it is only short term... or permanent loss."

Before Reginald could say anything else, Dr V had dropped him and went inside, leaving a new horrifying worry to festering inside Reginald.

Was Right's memory loss only a temporary thing, or was years of memories forever forgotten, leaving only a stranger that was currently in Right's place.

Reginald could only hope for the best, hoping that Dr V could give him an answer....

...and hoping Right would eventually remember.
