Work Text:
Setting: The park (from Seasons 7-9).
Scott[1] is sitting on the idea bench. He has the Barney Doll in his lap. He is crying silently, and a teardrop falls off of his face and lands on the doll. Barney springs to life, surprising Scott and pushing him and the bench backwards a bit to make room.
"Barney!," shouts Scott, trying hard to sound happy as he jumps to his feet to greet his purple friend.
"Hi Scott," replies Barney cheerfully. After greeting him, Barney looks at Scott for a moment, looking with concern at the wetness on his cheeks and his trouble keeping his smile on.
"Are you feeling okay?," asks Barney compassionately.
"I just want to cry," says Scott softly, hoping that Barney doesn't ask him why.
As Scott starts crying again softly, Barney stands next to her and starts singing "It's OK to Cry."[5]
As Barney softly sings the song, Scott lets himself cry, no longer trying to stop himself.
As Barney finishes the first verse and starts the chorus, Rachel[2], Kami[3], and Jackson[4] arrive. They see Barney and Scott and are careful to stay very quiet as they watch and listen. The kids are concerned to see Scott cry, but they don't want to scare him when he's so vulnerable, so they stand quietly as them empathize with him.
Scott starts opening his eyes and a small smile forms on his eyes.
Scott sings the final chorus himself, feeling better with every moment. He stands up and gives Barney a big hug as the song finishes.
"Scott, what that boy said to you in class was really mean," says Kami. Beaming him a warm smile, she adds: "I really liked your patch."
"Would you mind showing it to us?," asks Rachel smiling.
Scott is very nervous. The boy in school tore his patch in two, and he doesn't want to show it. He isn't able to come up with an answer.
"It's okay if you don't want to share it," says Barney, comforting Scott.
Scott is relieved that he doesn't have to show his embarassing patch again, even if it is with his friends.
"Why would that boy say something so mean if your patch is so great?," asks a very confused Scott.
"What did he say?," inquires Kami.
"That it's too 'girly,' and that I'm a 'mama's boy'," says Scott, visibly upset again.
"That doesn't make sense. Why is it okay for me to wear something, but it's not okay for a boy?," asks Rachel as she hooks her fingers under the straps of her shortalls with the butterfly on the bib, bringing attention to them.
The other kids are equally puzzled. They're unable to think of a good reason, even though it's clear to them that is how the world is.
"You're right. Girls and boys can wear any clothes they want to," Barney chimes in.
"Your clothes look really nice," compliments Rachel to Scott. "I wish I could wear what you're wearing."
"And you're dressed very pretty," responds Scott.
"Pink is a very nice color. Imagine how nice I would look dressed like you," says Jackson to Kami.
"And imagine how different things would be if I were a boy," answers Kami.
"But Kami, you're a girl. I don't think it works like that," says Jackson.
"You can do anything with enough imagination." adds Barney.
"It would be so much fun to pretend to be a girl, just for a day!" exclaims Scott.
"I wonder how the boys would treat me if I were one?" wonders Rachel.
Barney starts singing "Just Imagine."[6]
Barney sings the opening chorus softly as the kids dance and skip their way towards the grass and stones around the pond (and in front of the bridge) in large, flowing motions.
Scott and Rachel take turns singing the lines from the first verse. They dance up onto the bridge then hold hands and keep their free hand outstretched to the heavens, like princesses singing on a balcony. As they sing about making 'rainbows that never end,' sparkles fly, and when they disappear, Rachel and Scott have switched clothes and hair (but have kept their faces, voices, shapes, and other traits).
Rachel and Scott dance back down to the grass to rejoin Barney, Kami, and Jackson as everyone starts to sing the second chorus.
For the second verse, Kami and Jackson dance their way onto the bridge, and, like Rachel and Scott, they take turns singing their lines. As they sing the line about playing pretend, they hug each other, sparkles fly, and when they go away, they've swapped their clothes and hair.
Everyone sings the last chorus, this time dancing their way towards the square/plaza in front of the Caboose.
Once the song ends, the kids look down at their clothes. Kimi is wearing Jackson's clothes, Jackson has Kami's pink shortalls covering him up, Rachel looks like a bumblebee, and Scott is rocking a pair of shortalls with a butterfly on the front. The kids all let out a 'Wow!' as they exitedly look at their new clothes, which fit perfectly, having shrunk or grown as needed to fit their new wearers.
They notice that clothes aren't the only thing they've swapped.
"I like your long, shiny hair," compliments Rachel to Scott as she feels the top of her head and realizes that she's wearing Scott's hair.
"I really like the curls," says Kami as she puts her hand through her now short and very curly hair. Kami's hair had always been perfectly straight, and wearing tightly curled hair feels very different.
"I could play all day in these!" exclaims Jackson, pointing to the pink denim covering his body. "They look nice and feel even better!" He pushes his long, straight black hair away from his face, noticing how different his hair now feels.
"I'm so glad that I'm with such good friends," says Rachel.
"I do feel much safer having fiends like you around me," says Scott, holding his hands out and apart to make it clear that he's talking to all of his friends.
Barney starts singing "Being Together."[7] Barney sings the opening verse, and soon enough they're dancing and singing about how much they love playing together. Everyone has big smiles plastered on their faces as they hop and skip around the square happily in their new clothes. Scott and Jackson's hair flop around quite wildly as they're without any sort of scrunchies or ties.
"That was fun," says Kami.
"It sure was," responds Scott, "but how do you keep your hair out of your face?"
"I like to use a headband, answers Kami. "It holds my hair out of my face, but lets it flow in the back. Now, where did I put my headband?" Kami looks around, finding the headband on the bridge where she had hugged Jackson.
"Do you want help putting it in?," offers Kami as she picks up the hairband and walks over to Jackson.
Jackson nods and smiles, as he doesn't have a clue how these things work. Kami fixes up Jackson's hair, then deftly inserts the headband, locking his hair into place in Kami's usual style.
"How do I look?," asks a curious Jackson.
"There's a big mirror in the Caboose. How about we all walk on over and take a look?," suggests Barney.
The kids love the idea, and they all follow Barney inside. Jackson is right behind Barney, skipping happily as he wonders how his hair looks, as Kami, Scott, and Rachel follow close behind.
There is a cheval mirror against the wall, which Jackson approaches. He smiles at his reflection, evidently happy at his appearance.
Kami and Rachel look at Scott and his unruly hair, simultaneously getting the same idea. "Braids!," exclaim the two girls together, surprising Scott.
Scott's first impulse is to reject this idea, but he is with his friends, and he's already wearing girl clothes. Besides, his hair is getting to be quite annoying in his face. Soon, curiousity gets the better of him as he smiles in approval. The two girls are more than eager to get started.
"Could I please get my hair done too?," asks Jackson, not wanting to be left out of the fun.
"It would be my pleasure," replies Kami with a smile.
"I'm sure the two of you will look awesome! I can't wait to see." says Barney, getting caught up in the excitement and anticipation.
Kami and Rachel bring some chairs over to near the mirror so they can sit down. Kami also brings over a bin full of colorful hair accessories. The four sit down, with Rachel sitting behind Scott and Kami behind Jackson. Jackson removes his borrowed hairband and hands it back to Kami.
Barney, Kami, and Rachel start singing the "Hair Song"[8] as Kami and Rachel start combing and preparing Scott and Jackson's hair.
Our hair, we wear it everywhere; Kami and Rachel are happily combing and straightening Scott and Jackson's hair.
we wear it when we're playing, Jackson and Scott are smiling as they look in the mirror,
and even at our school, while Kami and Rachel continue to sing happily.
and as it grows a little longer, The girls finish combing the boys' hair.
we can try new things. Rachel starts gathering Scott's hair in a single section.
My hair is special, and so is yours. Kami starts gathering Jackson's hair into two sections - one on each side.
It looks so nice to braid it gently, The girls grab the bases of the hair sections.
in a ponytail, now tie it. Rachel and Kami slip on a hair elastic to hold the base of the ponytail and one of the pigtails.
With a pretty ribbon with colors bright. Rachel ties a bright, glittery, and purple ribbon over the elastic while Kami ties up the second pigtail.
Our hair, it looks so very pretty, The girls raise a mirror behind each boy's head.
as it feels so great. The boys' smiles grow as they nod im approval.
My hair is special, and so is yours. Rebeca separates Scott's ponytail into three sections, as does Kami to the left ponytail.
Our hair, we wear it everywhere;Left over center, right over center, and repeat.
we wear it when we're playing,The girls diligently work their way down the hair.
and even at our school,Left over center, right over center,
and as it grows a little longer, tugging it snug after every stitch.
we can try new things.
My hair is special, and so is yours.
It looks so nice to braid it gently,
in some pigtails, now tie them. Kami and Rachel finish their braids.
With some pretty rainbow butterfly clips. Kami attaches a rainbow colored butterfly clip to the end of the pigtail.
Our hair, it looks so very pretty, Kami starts braiding the second pigtail.
as it feels so great. Rebecca ties down Scott's braid with a unicorn clip.
My hair is special, and so is yours.
My hair is special, and so is yours.
Kami finishes the second braid and attaches another rainbow butterfly clip as the song finishes. Both girls hold up a hand mirror so that the boys can see the results.
"Great job Rachel!" exclaims Scott. "I really like the purple ribbon."
"These pigtails are awesome!" shouts Jackson, as he pulls them in front of his shoulders to get a better look at them.
The kids stand up, and as they put away their chairs and hair supplies, a crack of thunder can be heard, followed by the pitter patter of rain striking the metal roof of the Caboose.
Moments later, Baby Bop comes running into the Caboose holding her yellow blankie.
"Baby Bop!" everyone shouts as Baby Bop runs down into the central space where the kids and Barney are and gives Barney a big hug.
"I, I, I ... I was looking for a rainbow, and then it got all thundery, and then it started raining, and then I ran inside," says Baby Bop, gesticulating quite vividly as she starts to calm down.
"But now, how am I going to find a rainbow? I really wanted to see a rainbow," says Baby Bop, her excitement at running from the rain turning to mild sadness at not getting to see her rainbow.
"I know!" exclaims Rachel. She gathers Barney and the other kids into a huddle and stage whispers "We could make a great big rainbow right here in the Caboose."
"Each of us could be a color of the rainbow," adds Scott.
"There are lots of colorful costumes in the costume closet," says Kami a little exitedly.
"That's a super-dee-duper idea, Kami," sing-songs Barney as he skips his way to the closet followed by Kami. The kids and Baby Bop follow more slowly, stopping far away enough to give Barney and Kami room to work.
Barney starts rummaging through the closet, handing Kami an item whenever he finds something that he thinks is useful.
"Rachel!" Kami exclaims has she tosses Rachel a hairband with large sunflower petals all around it. Rachel puts it on, her smiling face looking like the center of a large sunflower.
"Baby Bop!" shouts Kami as she tosses Baby Bop a wide grass hula skirt. "Oh Goodie! This'll look so pretty!" squees a happy Baby Bop.
"Jackson!" says Kami, tossing Jackson a red hooded cape. Jackson puts on the cape, saying "I look like Little Red Riding Hood."
"But ... these aren't very red," says Jackson, pointing to his pink shortalls.
"Pink is a kind of red," says Kami matter of factly.
"And it's a very pretty kind of red," adds Barney happily. Jackson is satisfied with the answer.
Barney fishes a tiger costume out next, which Kami sets aside for herself.
"... almost there ... just a little more, and, there!" says Barney as he finds a costume for Scott.
"Scott!" exclaims Kami, tossing him a blue dress with a pretty tutu on it.
Scott is surprised, but just for a moment, as he realizes that he's already dressed as a girl, has a girl's hair, so why not try on the pretty blue dress?
Scott believes he has a problem, not realizing that their costumes are meant to be worn over their clothes. His friends are depending on him to finish their rainbow, but where is he supposed to get changed. Everyone else is ready, even Kami, who just finished putting on her tiger onesie pajama costume.
Scott decides to get changed really quickly. That way no one will notice ... hopefully. He's really nervous since everyone is looking at him, waiting for him to put the blue dress on. He gathers his courage, and neither the kids nor the dinos are ready for what he does next.
Having never worn overalls before, Scott grabs the straps of his shortalls and tries to pull the outfit off in one big motion. He quickly gets one strap off, but the other strap gets stuck on his shoulder. Now he's stuck in his shortalls, with everyone watching, and he's not any closer to getting the dress on. At least his undies aren't showing, he thinks, trying to console himself.
"Scott!" shouts Rachel to an embarrassed Scott, trying to balance her tone between urgency and not scaring Scott any more than he already is. "Let me help you," Rachel says much more softly as she fixes up his shortalls. The other kids use their best manners not to laugh at the situation, empathizing with Scott and understanding how they wouldn't want Scott to laugh at them when they make a mistake.
"Arms up!" Rachel whispers to Scott, who is happy to have Rachel making the decisions for him. Rachel then helps Scott get into the dress.
"Everything's going to be just fine," Barney softly says to Scott, noticing that he's still a little flustered.
"Knowing when to get changed can be confusing, but here's a way to help us remember," says Barney as he transitions into song.
Barney starts singing the Dressing Song[9] as Baby Bob and the kids watch and listen with curiousity.
When we dress, we've got two choices.
We can dress all fancy, or get all naked.
When I'm not dressed, it can be scary,
like a duckling that has just hatched. (qu-ack)
When I wear my clothes I have so much fun.
'Cause they're nice and safe and warm.
Everyone joins in the singing and dancing.
When we're in the tub or sleeping in our beds, Rebecca pretends to scrub her back, Jackson, Kami, and Barney pretend to splash in the tub, and Baby Bop and Scott gesticulate sleeping.
Here our clothing we don't need.
We can still have fun, just safely by ourselves.
Just make sure to close the door! Everyone pretends to close an invisible door.
And when we're not sure how to dress right now, They all strike a thinking pose.
it's easy to remember how: They all spread out.
We keep our privates private, and our smiles public, They all first cover their crotch, then make big, toothy smiles while raising their arms.
And we're sure to have some fun.
When we're outside just playing around, They pair up, hold their partner's hand, and skip in a circle.
It's our outdoor clothes we wear. Everyone forms a line holding hands as they continue to dance.
Be they shorts and shirts, or overalls,
They're all so great, that it's hard to just wear one.
And when we're not sure how to dress right now, They all strike a thinking pose.
it's easy to remember how: They all spread out.
We keep our privates private, and our smiles public, They all first cover their breasts, then make a big wave hello while smiling.
And we're sure to have some fun.
We keep our privates private, and our smiles public, They all first cover their crotch, then make a pirouette while smiling.
And we're sure to have some fun.
"Barney, Barney!, can we still make our rainbow?" asks Baby Bop.
"Do you still want to make our rainbow?" asks Barney cheerfully.
"Yeah!" exclaim the kids together.
They start singing The Rainbow Song[10]. Each kid or dinosaur says the line corresponding to their color going from red to purple: Jackson, Kami, Rachel, Baby Bop, Scott, and finally Barney. As each being says their line, they line up and show off the matching colored parts of their costume. By the time all six individual colors have been sung, all six are standing in a line from left to right, their costumes forming a rainbow. They all hold hands, sing, and dance side to side as they sing the part about the colors forming a rainbow.
The rain stops, and Barney starts leading everyone outside, this time with purple in the front and red in the back. As they're marching outside, they start singing the second round of The Rainbow Song. This time one person sings the color, and everyone answers with the response. As they get outside, the ground is still wet from the rain, and there is a big rainbow over the bridge. Barney leads everyone to the bridge, and they reach the bridge just as they reach the rainbow part of the song, waving their arms in slow arcs in the air as if they were making the rainbow that is in the sky above their heads.
"That was _so_ much fun!," says Baby Bop, giggling. "I got to to see two rainbows today!"
"I really enjoyed dressing up in our colorful costumes,", adds Kami.
The rainbow slowly disappears.
"What's happenning to our rainbow? It's disappearing," asks Baby Bop.
"Rainbows are very special. They come out when the sun and rain come together," says Barney.
"And when the rain dries in the warm sun, the rainbow goes away," adds Jackson, "but it'll be back the next time it rains!"
"I'm going to go looking for butterflies. See you all later!," says Baby Bop.
"Bye Baby Bop!" shouts out everyone as Baby Bop skips away happily.
Rachel gathers Kimi, Jackson, and Barney together into a huddle and they whisper excitedly as they concoct a plan.
"What's going on?" asks Scott, noticing that he wasn't invited into the huddle, and that everyone is looking at him as they leave the huddle.
"Come on inside with us," Rachel instructs Scott with a warm and reassuring voice.
Everyone heads into the Caboose.
"Scott, we'd all be really, really happy if you showed us your heart patch," suggests Kami to Scott, trying her best to be convincing and reassuring.
The other kids and Barney nod in agreement as they smile warmly. Scott suddenly gets very nervous.
Scott doesn't say anything, but his face conveys his feelings. His patch is still torn in two by the boy in school, and he's still afraid to show it even to his friends.
Barney moves up besides Scott and lays a hand on his shoulder, saying "I know it can be hard, but that heart you made is just one of the many things that make you you. Your mom and you both made it with your hearts, and that makes it special, just like you."
Scott and Barney hold hands, and everyone starts singing "It's Nice Just to Be Me."[11]
The other kids link up, so that everyone is in a line.
Once they have sung the first time through the song, Scott separates from the line and steps forward, taking the limelight and looking tall and proud in his blue tutu dress.
As they reach the final segment of the song ("No one else is just like I am ..."), Scott starts marching in place.
With the final line of their song, Scott takes a bow, and everyone cheers.
"Thanks. I'm feeling much better now," says Scott to his friends.
Rachel pulls her sunflower hairband off, saying "We should put our costumes away."
Kami pulls at her onesie, saying "Yeah, mine is really hot."
The kids quickly remove their costumes and Barney helps them put them away.
The kids are again looking at Scott, who remembers what he wants to share.
"It'll be even more fun if we make a song as I show it. Follow me," says Scott excitedly as he leads everyone out of the Caboose and to the large tree near the gazebo.
Scott starts singing his modified version of "The Green Grass Grows All Around."[12]
Note: The following four lines are sung first by Scott and then echoed by the kids and Barney. The other lines are sung by everyone. This repeats in future verses:
There were some friends (there were some friends) Everyone holds their arms outstretched.

And the friends they played and they sang and they danced.
And the friends they played all day long.
As the song finishes, the kids take a good look at Scott's heart patch. The kids notice that Scott's heart is torn in two. One half has a movie reel, the letter 'I' and the left half of a broken heart, while the other half has the rest of the heart, the word 'Mom,' and a sunflower.
"Why is your heart ripped?," asks Jackson, a hint of sympathy showing on his face.
"It was in school. That boy tore it off my shirt and then ripped it in two before giving it back to me," answers Scott, a bit of anger showing in his voice and face.
"You worked so hard to make it. Why would he do that to you?," asked Kimi a little indignantly.
"It's hard to know why, but the important thing is that we can fix it." says Barney.
"We can?!" shout the kids together.
"Yes, we can. Scott, would you mind letting me see it for a moment?," asks Barney.
Scott hands Barney the torn heart patch. Barney puts his back to the kids as he starts doing things to the heart.
After a few moments, Barney turns around. The heart is crudely stuck back together.
"Now for the most important part. Scott, hold still for a moment," says Barney who then affixes the patch to Scott's shortalls, next to the butterfly on the bib.
"I need everyone to give Scott a great, big hug." instructs Barney.
Rachel, Kimi, Jackson, and Barney all eagerly give Scott a big group hug.
Once the hug is finished, Scott looks down at his chest. His eyes light up as he sees what's happened. Instead of 'I' and 'Mom,' there are now very well done cartoon pictures of the faces of Barney, Kami, Rachel, Jackson, Scott, and Scott's mom surrounding the heart.
"It looks like we all really do love you, Scott," says Kami, as the other kids make sounds and gestures of agreement.
"Too bad I won't be able to wear my wonderful heart to school anymore, or these lovely shortalls." says Scott with a tinge of sadness on his face.
"Don't you worry. We'll be with you, and we won't let him or anyone else do anything mean to you," says Jackson.
"I'm going to wear these lovely clothes of yours to school tomorrow, Scott," says Rachel.
"And I'm going to be rockin' in these pink clothes," says Jackson, grabbing his pink shortalls.
"You're not afraid that you'll get picked on for looking like a boy?," Scott asks Kami.
"If we all wear what we're wearing now, it'll be fun. When one person does something, it's odd. When lots of people do it, it's popular." says Kami thoughtfully.
"And remember, Scott, that your friends will always be by your side," adds Barney.
Barney and the kids start singing "The Friendship Song."[13] They dance enthusiastically as they sing the song, with high-fives, hugs, hand holding, line dancing, and plenty of other expressions of their collective friendship and happiness.
"That was fun!," exclaims Scott.
"I'm so excited that I can't wait to go to school tomorrow. We're going to have so much fun," says Rachel.
"Today was a great day. We made rainbows, and Jackson let me borrow his lovely hair," says Kami, rubbing the short, very curly hair on top of her head.
"And we dressed up in neat costumes. I really liked my Little Red Riding Hood costume, and it goes so well with this lovely hair," adds Jackson, softly feeling his braids and drawing some happy and supportive chuckles from the other kids.
"My favorite part was spending the day with the people I love and care about," says Barney.
Barney starts singing "I Love You,"[14] as he hugs the children one by one. Each one smiles warmly and gives Barney a big hug when it's their turn. As they reach the second part of the song, everyone joins in the singing and they hold hands to form a line and they dance, with Scott and Barney in the center. As the song ends, everyone gathers around Barney and gives him a great big hug.
"I'm heading home to start my homework," says Kami.
"Yeah, we've got a big day tomorrow. I just can't wait!" exclaims Jackson.
The kids say goodbye and wave to each other as they hop and skip out of the Caboose, not noticing that Barney has turned back into a doll or that he winks at them as they leave.
