Work Text:
The house is completely silent when Yukichi comes home; which, of course, he is expecting. It's three o'clock in the morning, and the only other occupant in the house needs as much sleep as he can get. Though Yukichi himself has been banned from the Agency for a few months now, there are still times when he manages to get out of the house (though he doesn't particularly like being out of the house for long these days), and today was one of them.
Carefully, and as quietly as he can, Yukichi opens the door to the bedroom he shares with his husband, shutting it just as quietly and then making his way to the bedside, where Ougai is curled up in his self-constructed nest of blankets, pillows, and most of the other soft materials in the home, sleeping soundly. A smile twitches at the corners of Yukichi's lips, his expression growing almost impossibly soft as he gazes at him. Ougai's been so exhausted lately, which of course is unsurprising, considering he's nearing the end of his pregnancy, with his due date only a few days away now, and seeing him sleeping like this for once is a relief.
However, as Yukichi (who is also incredibly tired himself, and very much ready for sleep) attempts to climb into bed, he hears a floorboard creak under his foot when he braces his knee on the bed, and winces. Shit. For a split second, he thinks that, just maybe, his husband managed to sleep through it, but as he sinks further onto his side in the bed, he hears a soft groan. His heart sinks a little when Ougai turns his head to look over his shoulder, exhaustion still clear in his eyes, though they light up when he registers his husband's presence.
"Oh… welcome home, love," Ougai murmurs. He yawns widely as Yukichi gently slides into bed fully next to him, wrapping his arm around Ougai's waist and resting his hand on his belly as he cuddles into Yukichi's side. "Mmm… what time is it?"
"Depending on how you want to look at it, it is either far too late, or far too early, for you to be awake," Yukichi says, his voice soft as he presses a kiss to Ougai's forehead, then to his lips when he leans up for another. "Go back to sleep."
Ougai chuckles softly. "I've been sleeping almost all day, darling," he says, rolling his head against Yukichi's chest, his body and voice clearly still heavy with sleep. "Oh- I completely forgot, I was… going to try to make dinner for you tonight, I had the leftovers myself earlier, you must want-"
As Ougai starts to try to push himself up, Yukichi gently uses his other arm not wrapped around his waist to hold him in place, saying "Absolutely not," as he does. "You are not going to be making me dinner at-" he checks the analog clock on the bedside table, "-three thirty in the morning, Dove. Certainly not when you are very nearly nine months pregnant, as well." He gives a little smile again, then gently rubs his thumb across Ougai's cheek. "If I was really that hungry, I could always make something myself. I am not having nearly as many difficulties moving around and getting sleep as you are right now, after all."
Ougai manages a soft laugh at that, but lays back against Yukichi's side again, resting his head on his chest. "You have a point, I suppose." Another yawn leaves him as he cuddles more firmly up to his husband, closing his eyes. "Mmm… I don't believe I'd let you go right now, either. You are quite comfortable. Perhaps I should just add you to my nest, hm?"
Yukichi leans down again, kissing Ougai's scalp, gently rubbing his hand over the side of Ougai's belly as he does. "If that is what you want, I would let you. It is the least I can do for you right now."
Opening his eyes once more for just a moment to look up at Yukichi, Ougai smiles, his voice growing sleepier and heavier as he mumbles, "You are so good to me. Whatever did I do to deserve you?"
Leaning his head back against the pillows and half-closing his eyes, Yukichi returns the smile. "I ask myself the same thing about you, sometimes."
Yukichi only falls asleep himself when the pattern of Ougai's breaths tells him he's gone back to a peaceful sleep once more, still holding him close, gentle, and secure in his arms.
