This time, in the pause between his words, Yukichi can hear a soft little sniffle and rapid shuffling of cloth, and now he feels his heart ache as he realizes what his husband feels before even he does.
"Because I want you here. On nights like these, I miss you, so much, and I just want you here."
An unexpected phone call during one of Yukichi's late nights at the office leads to an admission that's been a long time coming on Ougai's part.

Summary
There are many lessons people must learn in life. For Yukichi Fukuzawa, one of those lessons just so happens to be "learning to understand and accept the fact that there are people in his life who love him as much as he loves them, maybe even more, and to them, his innate instinct to be ready to sacrifice himself - whether that happens to be his well-being, health, or even his life - is not a comforting thing to bear witness to." Alternatively: Ougai (formerly Mori) Fukuzawa allows himself to be vulnerable and tells his husband, in no uncertain terms, that a sacrifice is not something he ever wants to receive from him. There are sometimes advantages to talking about your feelings.
Written for Fukumori Week 2023 day 1: Sacrifice. Takes place after "dog days are over" chapter 12.

If he had to put it in simple terms…
The main reason Ougai hasn't said anything to Yukichi about this particular concern is both because he feels he can handle it on his own, and it also embarrasses him to admit, even to himself, that he's been stressing over it for the past week or so. So it goes unsaid.
Well. It goes unsaid, until it can no longer go unsaid, thanks to it coming to the surface in an emotional and (in Ougai's opinion) terrifying way.
Ougai is unable to hide this particular weakness. Yukichi shows him he doesn't have to. (title is from "The Last Night" by Skillet)
