Work Text:
Even before he was exiled, Lez knew the world was total shit. He barely needed a second glance to know why: adults who wanted to kill him, traps that spelled doom if they struck and of course, the cold. Lez was familiar with the cold for it was an old companion that reminded him that he was still alive on dark nights when he thought he was dead. That night in New Dream was cold, but Mono’s bed was the polar opposite of the world around them: warm, soft and cozy. Lez let out a tired sigh as he flipped onto his back, the bed making a soft creak sound from his movements. Lez’s head relaxed against the pillow, its soft surface nicely cushioning his head and neck as he rolled onto his side, the blanket on his body falling a bit to rest on his waist.
Lez grabbed hold of the blankets and pulled them upwards to cover his shoulders, he let out a sleepy sigh as he felt the warmth engulf him from all sides, lulling him back to a comfortable sleep. If Lez was being perfectly honest with himself, he always liked sleeping in Mono’s tent more than his hut especially on cold nights like this. The Boss’ bed was one of the biggest factors as to why, his bed was soft and comfortable, the pillows and blankets were cozy and warm and of course, he had the pleasure of waking up next to the most beautiful, sweet boy he had ever met who also was the Boss of New Dream.
Lez let out a sigh as he turned over to face the sleeping boy who was passed on his other side, chest raising and falling with every breath he took. Soft toned developing muscles on full display even through the darkness within the tent, Lez blushed softly at the sight before turning his head away. Even though the heterochromic teen wasn’t one for being attracted to looks alone, he had to admit the sight of his friend shirtless with his muscles on full display was a nice view. Lez settled beside the sleeping Mono, reaching a hand out and caressing the boy’s right cheek gently. Mono did nothing more than squirm slightly before sticking an arm under the pillow to pull it down, a yawn escaping his lips as he stretched out his body.
The noise Mono let out was adorable and brought a smile to Lez’s lips, then again Mono always had some cute noises such as his giggling and/or laughter but whenever Mono yawned, this was always the noise that made Lez blush. Lez’s hand traveled more up into the tanned teen’s bag, fingers gently stroking the teen’s dark hair as he slept like a log. Mono's hair was soft much like his toned skin, more softer and probably more messy then his own possibly because he didn’t have much access to a comb, Lez would probably have to change that. Maybe he could snatch a comb from the Brothers after they came back from their scavenger.
That was for later as by this point, Lez was starting to get cold from the air around him, the boy clasped his arms around his body, shivering hard and teeth chattering. He looked downwards to the blanket and remembered why he chose to sleep in Mono’s bed that night, the bed and the boy beside him were soft, cozy and of course, warm. Sighing, Lez grabbed hold of the blanket and laid down on Mono’s bed, regaining warmth as he fell back asleep.
Hours Later
However in a world like this, the pleasant feelings don’t always last forever, Lez knew that for sure even though sometimes, he wished it would. There was always something rotten hiding beneath the surface, waiting for the right time to pop up and ruin a good night's sleep. In Lez’s case, it was long ago memories that the boy’s subconscious had struggled to bury deep inside him so he didn’t have to think about them. Lez took in a deep breath through his nose, shifting his body on Mono’s bed, head resting fully on the pillow. He gave a slight twitch but did nothing more than that as he continued to sleep.
After a few more seconds, Lez flipped onto his side, facing away from Mono, dragging the blanket more upwards as his shoulders were starting to get cold. Once he did that, the raven/snow haired teen shoved one arm under the pillow, nuzzling into it rather aggressively. However, the peace didn’t last long as Lez took in another breath through his nose, this one more quicker then the last. One of the boy’s hands unconsciously clutched the blanket covering him, his breathing sped up into frantic breathing, his face scrunched up into a look of what would be considered fear or anger, the former emotion strange on Lez.
“No, no please,” Lez mumbled out over Mono’s light snoring, curling into himself. If he was still conscious, Lez would’ve been disturbed by the pathetic display he was putting on, but here in his own mind, Lez was a small fearful child again. “No, no, get away from me, get away!” The whimper in his throat became a cry followed by a kick as Lez’s nightmare awoke his reflexes. Mono jolted a little at Lez’s action but nothing else happened as the kick didn’t have much force behind it to do much damage to him.
Lez gritted his teeth as he tossed and turned more violently, the blanket on his body getting tangled around him. His head thumped harder on the pillow, burying it deeply into the fabric as if to try to hide from the nightmare he was having. One of his hands clutched hard into a fist then smacked into the bed, Lez’s breathing sped up into frantic panting and sweat broke out on his forehead. Eventually Lez let out a choked cry followed by violent thrashing and kicking almost like the mismatched eyed teen was being attacked by a monster. Mono, who had been in a fitful sleep, was suddenly woken up by someone kicking both his side and thighs rather hard like someone was having a violent nightmare right beside him.
However, there was only one person who was sleeping beside him. Upon hearing his friend’s panicked cries, Mono was up in seconds and whipped his full attention to Lez who was kicking and flailing around in his bed, crying out in terror. “Lez!” Mono exclaimed, immediately grabbing the other boy’s shoulders and shaking him awake much like how he woke Six up when she had a nightmare four years ago. “Lez, Lez! Wake up! Come on, wake up!” Lez woke up with a choked scream caught in his throat, his eyes burst open and his entire body shook violently as his mind finally left the dream world.
The boy shot up on Mono’s bed, panting heavily for breath, sweat drenching his body making him feel hotter than he would be in summer. For once, Lez was grateful for the cold as it helped cool him off. “Lez?” The heterochromic teen jumped a bit as he heard Mono’s soft voice fill his ears, he slightly turned his head to face the boy who moved his hands away from his shoulders to rest on his knees, eyes filled with deep concern mostly for him. Lez turned away from Mono at that point, feeling like nothing but a burden on the Boss. However, Mono’s soft gentle voice got his attention. “Lez?” Lez let out a breath through his nose as he turned his head back to face the bag headed teen. “I’m sorry,” the boy sighed.
“It’s ok Lez,” Mono said gently, scooting closer to the boy and soothingly rubbing his sweat coated back. “Was it another nightmare?” With a sigh, Lez nodded his head. “Hey, come here.” Lez didn’t know what caused him to crawl in between Mono’s arms and snuggle into his chest, but he was glad he did because Mono’s arms were much like his bed, warm and inviting. Lez let out a soft sigh as he felt his entire body lose all of it’s tension and simply melt into the warmth of his friend was emitting, he gratefully wrapped his own arms around Mono’s neck and nuzzled into the older’s chest where he could easily hear his heartbeat, a sign that told him someone he loved was still here.
Mono startled a little in his bed as he felt the sudden crash onto his chest, tense as a plank of wood like he usually was after those nightmares. But as the tension left his friend’s body, Mono looked down and smiled as he felt Lez nuzzle into him, hugging him tightly to ensure he was still there. Mono brought his arms up and hugged the boy back, hand resuming the same soothing motions on Lez’s back. Lez couldn’t contain a smile from appearing on his face as he felt the soft affection from the other boy even though he wasn’t a fan of him always being soft considering nothing went well for Lez when he tried, the smile slowly faded as his mind flashed back to memories of his long dead family, the ones of his sisters stood out the most and nearly brought a tear to his silver eye.
However Lez forced himself not to cry and snuggled even deeper into Mono’s warm chest, letting out a soft sigh as he felt the other boy run a hand through his hair. Lez hadn’t admitted this to Mono just yet, but he kind of liked it when the Boss stroked his hair and grazed his scalp. “Do you want to talk about it?” Mono asked suddenly, nearly making the other boy jump. “N-no, I don’t want to talk about it, not yet at least,” Lez said in a shaky voice, curling even further into the other boy’s embrace. “Alright, that’s fine,” Mono said gently, nuzzling into Lez’s forehead making the other boy blush softly. “But if you ever need someone to talk to about these nightmares, I’m here.”
Lez didn’t say anything, only gave a nod as Mono gently tipped their bodies till they were lying down on his bed and embraced by the warmth of the blankets and the boy holding him. Lez yawned rather cutely as he relaxed into his friend’s arms, eyes slowly closing and his looming exhaustion finally caught up to him. Thanks to the warmth of Mono, Lez had no problem passing out though Mono stayed up a little more, rubbing the boy’s back and stroking his hair to ensure he slept peacefully. The world might be cold with nightmares around the corner, but here in his friend’s strong arms, Lez felt nothing but warm, safe and loved.
