“I took Warlock to the Natural History Museum today,” Nanny Ashtoreth remarked, settling into her usual after-hours seat in the gardener’s cottage.
Sipping cocoa, Brother Francis raised an eyebrow. “How was the museum?” he inquired.
“Terrific.” She leaned back in the chair, looking very satisfied with herself. “Loved it.”
“Oh?”
“Absolutely. Warlock and I had the same favorite part.” Ashtoreth grinned. “The kid thought it was fun. And scary… but, well, antichrist, so he likes scary.”
“Hm.” Brother Francis grimaced slightly, but let the antichrist comment pass without comment. “And you?”
“I thought it was hilarious. Funniest thing I’ve ever seen.” Nanny Ashtoreth was already chuckling; she had to pause to catch her breath. “We should have our next rendezvous there, so you can see it.”
“To see what? My dear girl—”
Between chortles, she gasped out the answer: “A dinosaur skeleton!”
At that, momentarily forgetting the existential dread perpetually hanging over their heads, they both doubled over in peals of helpless, delighted laughter.

Somewhere, nowhere, and everywhere all at once, the Almighty smiled to Herself even more widely than usual.
The humans might not have figured it out yet, but it was nice to have somebody appreciate Her jokes.
