I Got a Sentimental Illness for You

Summary:

I saw an edit and I got reminded that I have a huge emo crush on Rodrick. Uh- So basically the Heffley's move to northeastern Ohio midway through the school year, and Rodrick meets a sporty alt band nerd who sees potential in the bad drummer. IT'S MY BISEXUALITY AND I GET TO DO WHAT I WANT. And YES, the title is from a Green Day song because no on is responding to my messages.

Edit from like, two months after the show, it was fucking amazing would recommend seeing Less Than Jake live.

Notes:

Perspective is from the (definently not a self insert) character, Jack Sadowski.

Chapter Text

Disclaimer: It's like...2 am. And I've being doing nothing but looking for lyrics for this stupid fanfitciton I've been meaning to write for like a week. I'm sorry if the quality is worse than some of my other works (Can't get worse than Lions Den though so-) I might make chaper 2 from Rodrick's pov just bcs why not. Also, yes the insert guy's name is Jack, leave me be. I'm tired and I have heartburn.

The days are long, but the nights are short. Mentally speaking, anyway. It's winter in Ohio, so the days are actually short, and the nights are long since that's how daylight savings work. I'm going to be honest, I love the winter. I enjoy the cold; cool breeze that soothes headaches, dry cool air to chill the lungs after a spicey cart rip, and its after new years so there's discount christmas candy at work. Plus, marching season's over, pep band just finished, I'm pretty much free. Other than my general workout and occasional wrestling, I get to do whatever. Not that there's much here. No mall, no arcade, just clouds and geese. Sometimes I just like cutting class and taking a walk just to distract myself from the grey of this place. There are some highlights, though... like Stage band, which is just jazz that's not as intense. Jass itself is fun, definetly the class I try hardest in. And creative writing is always at least entertaining, though it's on the other side of the school from the band room.

I'm usually the last one there, sauntering in like I own the place. The sub has lost his ability to give a shit, so being 2 minutes late means nothing to that class. Now, creative writing is fun, but listening to what these assholes come up with leaves me Dead! (an: starting strong with a MCR reference, get ready there's at least 5 in every chapter) Most of the people that I talk to in that class are in band like me, if not choir (ew). Chris, aka the tromboner, usually goes off the wall with his stories. Meth, aliens, cia consperacy, all of it. Didn't help he was a fanatic of the overdramatic anyway. Riley, a childhood best friend who has given birth to all of her reptiles, is an entertainer like me and plays along with Chris' bullshit.

when I walked into class and went to sit in my normal area, a black-haired emo kid was sitting in the corner chair right behind the one I sit in. Didn't really think much of it, there have been a lot of new students recently. Hell, one of my old friends from the 6th grade came back this year. I flopped down in my seat and glanced over at the new kid. He seemed pretty into doodling on a wrinkled piece of paper.

I turned to the other rows of desks near me that had been filled with my friends, who were either staring at their phones or talking about something random. Today's topic was how Chris hates the 90s and how the 80s were the best. I was only half paying attention, chiming in once on how "'90s had some of the best metal, and was the start of modern pop-punk" and whatnot. The rest of the period I spent going between playing random games on my phone and glancing over at the emo kid next to me. Eventually, the bell rang. I let out an over-dramatic sigh as I slowly pulled out my earbuds. I stood up with as much resentment as possible, waiting for everyone else around me file out of the classroom. Before I could stand, though, I (not so secretly) secretly looked at the emo boy as he stood and walked down the aisle of desks and out of the classroom. Now, this is purely the hormones and repressed bisexuality within me talking, but holy hell was it a pleasure to watch him leave.

The walk to my science was uneventful and full of Korn. The walk into Anatomy was glorious, though. I walked in and gave my good friend Eli the gay look.

"BROH." I sat at the table in front of them in a slump.

     "Bro?"

"I am not going to lie to you. That emo kind behind me last period? BRO." I'm going to be honest, as a short and wide bi man, I enjoy a twink from time to time.

"I know! He was so cute!" Eli is also queer, but in a slay way.

"You didn't get to watch him leave, though." I had a stupid smile on. I mentally knew I wasn't going anywhere with that little piece of heaven. (Author's note, Avenged Sevenfold song, METAL PUN)

"Jack, I swear to god." Now, this isn't the most out-of-pocket shit I've said about another human being, but it's been about a week.

Other than our conversation about the cute emo boy, the rest of Anatomy was spent taking notes and fucking around. I've never been one for paying attention in class, so I spend the class getting some missing work done or creating more missing work. Soon enough, the bell rang again for lunch. Since I'm a senior, I get first lunch. I usually take the long way, which just means walking around the school until I decide to go to lunch. It lets me get mentally ready for the loud-as-shit lunch room.

My lunch table is on the fuller end and consists of two different groups that all somehow hang out. I throw down my bag and sit in my usual spot in a huff. Anticipating looks greet me as my friends prepare for some random bullshit that will come from me. "Bro, there was this really cute guy in my fucking English today." There it is.

"Wow, Jack is crushing on another man? Shocker..." My best friend, Storm, is sarcastic, mean, tall, and a total stoner with a killer fashion sense. Today, she was rocking a pair of bell bottoms and a striped long-sleeve shirt.

"No, but he's just our type, he's tall, white, skinny, and emo!" I raised my hands enthusiastically. She gave me a look of overexaggerated interest.

"Skinny, white, and emo?!? I need to meet this man, right now." She gestured in a downward-pointing motion.

     "That's what I'm saying!"

"White, and a man? I could never." Most of my friends are bisexuals, and most of them are women-leaning. Silvia is a Mitski bisexual Hispanic demi-girl who is a picky eater and person in general. She's someone who will go, "Ew, carrots," but then eat up the blandest shit ever. I mean, I don't necessarily have a right to talk since half the things I eat at lunch are an abomination against the culinary arts, but who are any of us to truly judge?

Time skip because I'm too lazy to continue this scene. time skip to last period of the day.

God, I hate math. 6th period always makes me feel like my brain is leaking out of my ears. Luckily, my 7th period is just a free period. I dropped my history (I only needed three credits) so I took a free period. After waiting five minutes for the teacher to get there and open the door, I throw my stuff on my chair. I usually charge my phone during that period as a force of habit. Usually, I have a long bus ride to my mom's house, but since I started driving I haven't really needed to. I usually work on notes I need to catch up on, math homework I need to do, short stories, etc. Today, however, I colored a cat coloring page I stole from my grandmother's workplace. Something I haven't necessarily mentioned is that not only am I an edgy band kid, but I also am probably autistic.

Midway through a blue and green kitty, the door opens and closes to the classroom. I glanced up from my enriching activity to see... the piping hot sickness that I wouldn't mind getting down with (I'm so sorry). Christ, I could stare at screamo dreamo all day. And I kinda was, intensely.

Now, I'm not the most alternative person at school. I mean, what have these losers done to deserve my sexy punk-as-shit emo metal style? But I have a green stripe in my hair, and I wear a Deadpool hat all the time. Yes, I dress like the average fuck boy junior/senior who is athletic and a whore, but is it really a sin to wear hoodies and sweatpants? I watched as the dark dream slumped into the seat in front of me. The Old Spice kid™ wasn't here (We all have that one fuckin kid in our class) so I could catch a whiff of the walking MCR poster. I only was a little creepy with it, but he smelt like BO and desperation. I expected more weed, but hey, maybe he was the more nervous emo type. Who knows? I sure as hell won't. God knows he'll never talk to m-

"Hey, do you know any extracurriculars that are cool?" The hot emo kid just fucking turned around and spoke to me. THE HOT EMO KID JUST TURNED AROUND AND TALKED TO ME.

I took out an earbud, promptly said "Huh?", had him repeat himself, and promptly said, "Uh-" Shit, what do I say? "Band's alright, I guess." Band, right, like that's not the lamest fucking thing.

"Huh." He nodded and turned back to his desk. JESUS CHRIST, HE WEARS EYELINER. I don't think I've ever been more attracted to a man, other than Matthew Lillard, but that's beside the point. He just turned around and asked ME what was cool, and I gave him the shittiest answer ever, and then he turned away. I am stupid. GOD.

I tried to shove the burning homosexuality down, which I've forced all these years, and go back to my coloring. Then it happened again. The stupid, messy-haired, wanna-be Billy Joe Armstrong turned around again. "So, uh- what's the party scene around here like?"

I had to put my gay panic on a halt and mentally process the question. "I'm sorry, did you just say the party scene?"

He turned more to look at me, GOD is he pretty, "Yeah, like house parties."

I mentally lagged at the nonsense coming from my dream toy boy, "Uh- nonexistent? Most of us are too tired and or poor to host parties. Maybe if you went to Buckeye or Saint Emeritus (GHOST REFERENCE), then, MAYBE there would be parties. But they're nothing but dry humping, weed, and shitty alcohol. We have more sleepovers than parties. You're more likely to take LSD when over at a friend's house than you do at any house party." And that's on the fax. Most weekend stories during summer are just my friends hanging out, drinking, smoking, taking shrooms, then breaking and entering into a vacant house or some shit.

"Then I guess I should make friends." He nodded again and turned away. I was going to put my ear bud back in, BUT THIS SHIT FOR BRAINS TURNS AROUND AGAIN. And this time I know what he will try and pull out of his ass. He's going to introduce himself, thenh e's going to try and be friends. And It's because I have colored hair and piercings. And because I'm the first motherfucker he's talked to.

I'm tired and It's like, 6 am. Good night all.
