“I think I’m gonna do it,” Mugsy had told Chalice earlier that day.
“Hey, that’s great news! I’m proud of ya, why do you look so nervous?”
“Because! I don’t know how he’s going to react to this, and every time I think about how bad it could go I feel more and more like I shouldn’t do it.”
“Hmm…what if I helped you out? I could always tell him for ya if you want!”
“Really? You’d do that?”
“You’re like a sister to me Mugsy, of course! Look, we can all go out for ice cream and I’ll tell him then, and you can talk about it more with him if you want. But he’s your brother, he loves you no matter what.”
Mugsy hoped Chalice was right.
…
Cuphead had obviously agreed to the ice cream thing, so the three of them headed off.
Once they’d found a place to sit, Chalice volunteered to go get the stuff.
“So I’ll take vanilla, I know Cuphead wants chocolate. What about you, Mugsy? Cuphead, ask her what she wants, will ya?”
He hesitated, clearly a bit confused by what she had just said.
“Uh…what do ya want, Mugsy?”
“Strawberry,” she says.
While Chalice heads over to the counter, Cuphead thinks about what she had said.
Mugsy knows he has questions but doesn’t know how to ask, so…
“You heard Chalice right, Cuphead, and Chalice called me a she because I asked her to.”
“Oh…wait, why did you ask Chalice to call you a girl?”
“….because I am one, Cuphead.”
She turns away as her brother goes silent, afraid to see him decide he wouldn’t be related to a freak.
That he’d drag her home and tell Elder Kettle, so that they could both work to get rid of her.
That-
She felt a hand on her shoulder and prepared for the worst.
“Hey, Mugsy, it’s okay,” Cuphead said.
“R-really? You’re not mad?”
“Of course not! You’re telling me who you are, you’re my sister. I love you, Mugsy.”
Relieved, she hugs her brother.
“I love you too, Cuphead.”
“But you tell me if anyone bothers you, okay? No one messes with my sister.”
“And I’ll help,” Chalice grins as she returns with three bowls of ice cream.
Mugsy was relieved that it had went so well, and happily ate her ice cream.
