Work Text:
“Where’s L?” Everyone in the room looked away from their computers and at you.
The room stayed quiet for a minute before Mutsuda answered your question. “I think L is on the roof. He said something about getting some fresh air.”
You frowned. On the roof?
“Okay, thank you, Matsuda.” You turned and you caught Light staring at you.
He gave you a small smile and you quickly looked away from him. Light always seemed off-putting to you. Despite him always being nice and caring you couldn’t unnotice the times he would occasionally smile creepily and talk to himself. Out of all the people that were on the Kira case, Light just seemed too perfect.
You soon made it to the roof and you opened the door to reveal L standing in the rain. He seemed to have been looking for something as his focus bared into the clouded sky.
“L!” You called out his name.
L blinked and shifted his view onto you. His lips curved into a small smile but his gaze quickly went back toward the raining sky. If it were any other day, you probably would have just left L out in the rain, not wanting to understand why he would pick a rainy day to actually stand outside. But something was different, his smile wasn’t his usual expression. It almost seemed as if he was sad.
You walked into the rain and made your way in front of L.
Your eyes widened, “L, you’re drenched.”
How long was he out in the rain? L looked down at you.
“What are you doing out here?” You asked.
Rain dampened your face as you stared into his L’s eyes hoping to find some type of indication of what was going through his mind. L lifted his hand from his side and lightly touched your hair. Heat rose toward your cheeks as you noticed how close he was.
“Your hair is gonna mess up,” L stated.
Normally, you would have prevented anyone from touching your hair but L was a different case. He didn’t take his hand and try to run his fingers through your curly hair as most other people would do. He would simply and lightly grab a strand.
“Never mind my hair, is something wrong? Why are you standing out in the rain?” You asked.
L removed his wet hand from your hair and stared into your eyes. Your eyebrows knitted together as you waited for a response.
“I have a feeling.” L simply said.
“A feeling? . . . About what?”
“I might not be here for much longer.” He stated.
“What do you mean? Are you quitting on the investigation?” You asked.
“No . . . what I mean is, I might not be alive for much longer.”
“What?” You whispered.
You, L, and the rest of the team have gotten so far if L were to just suddenly-
“How-How do you know?” Heat rose toward your eyes.
“I don’t know, it’s a feeling.”
You looked toward the ground and you tightened your fist. “Do you think Kira is going to kill you?” Tears flooded your eyes.
L stayed silent and tears began to slide down your face.
“I-it’s not fair. I . . I,” You stuttered.
Your clothes began to stick onto your body as the rain drenched them. Which only seemed to add to your sorrow. You wished the rain could have washed the emotions away so you could’ve been more analytical about the situation but you couldn’t help how you felt.
“I-I don’t want you to go.” You whispered as your heart quickly beat inside your chest.
You didn’t want to reveal what was hidden within your heart but you didn’t want him to leave without him knowing how you truly felt about him. You never knew that you would grow to admire the detective, when in the beginning you thought he was weird and was too blunt.
L took your hands into his own and he called your name. Your heart skipped and you slowly looked up at him.
“I know this is hard to hear but I’m glad that I was able to tell you.” L lightly squeezed your hands and paused before speaking again.
“There’s something, I’ve been wanting to tell you and I’m sorry for my horrible timing.”
L paused again before speaking, “I have . . . feelings for you.”
Your eyes widened and L stayed silent as he studied your reaction.
“I almost always keep things professional when it comes to my work but for some reason, I fell for you. I just-,” L searched for his words.
“I just love you for you.” L simply said.
Your cheeks burned as you hesitated to speak, “I . . . I al-,”
“You don’t have to say anything. I simply just wanted to tell you before anything were to happen to me.” L explained.
You slipped your hands out of L’s grip and around L’s wet body as you hid your face within his chest. L slowly wrapped his arms around your body and squeezed you tightly within his arms causing you to hear how his heart beat quickly in his chest.
You clinched the back of L’s shirt as your heart felt conflicted. A part of you was filled with warmth as L confessed to you but another part of you felt cold at the possibility that the confession was going to mean nothing in the end if L faded away.
Tears began to swell up in your eyes again, “L?”
“Yes?” L asked softly.
“I . . . I also have feelings for you.” Tears fell out of your eyes as your face heated up.
L pulled slightly away from you and stared into your eyes as he brought his wet hands to the sides of your face and he began to wipe the tears from your cheeks.
A small smile graced L’s lips, “Thank you for telling me.”
L’s eyes shifted down to your lips and a light red tint appeared on his cheeks. Heat raised toward your face as you thought of L’s intention. L slowly leaned down toward you and you closed your eyes as the heart in your chest beat wildly. Soft skin pressed against your forehead and light butterflies entered your stomach. L slightly pulled away and stared into your eyes. You gave him a soft smile and L’s cheeks redden further.
“Thank you, L for telling me what was on your mind and how you felt about me. I just wish I could’ve done more.”
“You have already done enough. I would just like to spend a little more time with you.” L expressed.
“What are you guys doing out there, it’s pouring.”
You and L looked toward the voice and Light stood by the entrance to the roof with a raised eyebrow. You slowly pulled away from L and brought your hands to your sides. L soon copied your motions, removing his hands from your face.
Why is Light here? If only Light was already caught then L wouldn’t have to feel like his life was going to end. If only I was able to catch Light in the act of something that he could not deny.
“We’ll be down in a moment, Light,” L told Light.
Light frowned but still left to go back down to the room. “We should head back, I don’t want you to catch a cold,” L stated.
“Okay,” You replied.
L began walking toward the door and he put one of his hands into his pockets. Before he could do the same to the other hand, you quickly grabbed it and L stopped to look at you.
“Sorry, I pulled away earlier, I was just s-,”
“You don’t have to explain. I’m just glad I’m here with you.” L smiled.
L intertwined his fingers with yours as he bent down and pressed his lips onto your cheek.
