Jack drew his pistol and raised it to sight along the barrel in a single fluid motion, firing once, twice, three times.
“Sorry sir,” replied the youth manning the booth in a voice quavering with recent puberty. “No bullseyes. Better luck next time!”
Jack muttered an obscenity and turned away. “Goddamn game is rigged!”
“Obviously,” Martha replied with a grin. “And yet you tried anyway?”
“You wanted a stuffed bear,” Jack began, all faux gallantry and charm. “And,” he admitted, “I didn’t want to back down. C’mon, let’s try something else.” he craned his neck over the crowd. “Cotton candy! The Doctor took Rose and I–” (“This is your one time for the evening.”) “--for the first cotton candy - the St. Louis World’s Fair!” He sighed with remembered pleasure. “What a week. Purely coincidental that the phrase ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ was coined there.”
“You’re not joking, are you?” Martha sighed, because of course he wasn’t. It was one of their few rules: don’t lie about the Doctor. “Anyway, I’ve got to try to salvage your honor,” she continued with a grin, plunking down a couple tickets.
“Bullseye!” chirped the pimpled youth, and handed over a half-meter’s worth of overpriced stuffing.
“Beginner’s luck?”
Martha snorted. “You wish - try growing up the middle sibling and see how competitive you get at this sort of thing. Of course, then Leo would cry if things didn’t go his way, and we wound up giving him our prizes half the time anyway.”
“You want to hang onto this guy then?” Jack grinned, and poked the massive bear in the nose.
“Nah,” Martha replied with her own smile. “I’m going to need my hands free. Skeeball, maybe?” Jack merely laughed and followed her through the crowd.
