Work Text:

Yellow slumped back in his chair and gnawed at the silicon charm on his chew necklace. The colored text on his computer screen reflected into his glasses, his cursor blinking at him tauntingly.

“Hmmrrghh….” he groaned incoherently, giving his chair a spin as he slid down into it further. “Mmph.”

“Uh-huh, yeah, totally,” his roommate, Blue, responded to his sighs.

“Shut up,” Yellow responded. He spun around in his chair again. “I hate this assignment more than death.”

“That’s what you get for taking all the nerd classes, my guy,” Blue said idly. He was washing dishes in the kitchenette behind Yellow’s desk.

“Aren’t friends supposed to console friends in pain?” Yellow retorted lightheartedly. “Look at this! I’m suffering, and all you do is mock me.” He clutched his chest in mock pain.

“Hey, all I’m saying is that if all your gonna do about hard assignments is moan and groan, maybe Compsci wasn’t the best choice. You know, the major that’s infamous for hard assignments.” He walked over to him and put his hand- which still had a wet cleaning glove on- on his friend’s shoulder. “Also, you should get to bed soon. It’s almost eleven, and you’ve been staring at that screen for hours.”

“Ew, gross.” Yellow plucked Blue’s begloved hand off his shoulder and rubbed at the wet spot it left. “Yeah, yeah. I will. Once I finish this.” He spun himself toward his screen and put his necklace back in his mouth.

“Alright, man. I’m going to bed.” He stretched and took off the gloves, leaving them to dry next to the now-cleaned dishes in the sink. “And I’d quit chewing on that if I were you, don’t wanna break another bracket,” Blue called as he walked into the bathroom to change.

Shut uuuup,” Yellow responded.

Blue rubbed his eyes blearily and looked at the clock. It was two in the morning? He rarely woke up this early- everyone knew he slept like a rock. He sat up quietly in bed, wondering what had made him wake up. The glow of a computer screen and the soft tak tak tak of a keyboard answered his question. Blue sighed quietly.

He got up and walked over to the hunched figure at the other end of their studio apartment. Yellow looked like a right mess bathed in the electric light of his computer. There were deep bags carved into the underneath of his eyes and his hair was knotted from what Blue guessed was him pulling on it in frustration. He looked up slowly from his screen as Blue walked over to him, sustaining his hunched position.

“You should be in bed,” Blue said in an accusatory voice.

“So should-” he yawned, “-you.”

“Yep.” Blue pushed Yellow’s chair away from the desk and clicked the save button on his computer.

Nooooo, I gotta finish it….” Yellow moaned sleepily as Blue turned off the computer.

“Tomorrow. You need to sleep.” Blue picked up the smaller boy out of his seat and hoisted him over his shoulder. Yellow reached out towards the desk before ragdolling in Blue’s arms as he walked them over to the two of them’s beds.

“You’re evil,” Yellow grumbled and yawned again.

“Uh-huh. Sure I am.”

Yellow tapped Blue on the back just as he was about to be set down into his bed. “Wait. Your bed.”

“Huh?”

Yellow buried his face into Blue’s shoulder as he spoke. “Wanna sleep- yawn- in your bed.”

“Um! Okay?” Blue felt his face go hot. “Whatever you want, man.” He brought them over to his bed- which was hardly big enough to fit both people, though Yellow was pretty small- and set down his friend on one side. “This good?”

Yellow hummed pleasantly in response. Blue got in on the other side, back turned away from Yellow. He could feel the other man’s warmth on his back, which made his face grow even hotter. Don’t think about it, don’t think about it.

“I still hate you for making me stop,” Yellow said quietly, putting his head against Blue’s back.

“Goodnight, Yellow.”

“‘Night, Blue.”

The next time Blue woke up, it was to a very loud swear word coming from beside him.

“‘S goin’ on?” He mumbled.

Yellow was running a hand through his hair. “Duuuude, I overslept! I’m gonna miss my morning class now, and there’s no way I’m gonna turn in that assignment on time!”

Blue turned around in bed. “Not my fault.”

“You are evil, dude.”

Blue yawned. “You love me.”

“Sure.”

Blue smiled into his pillow and went back to sleep.
